A question for the ladies - hysterectomy related

That must be common with anesthesia! I also had a laparoscopical procedure to remove just my right ovary. I went in at 2 p.m. and was home later that night wondering what in the heck the doctor did to my shoulder while waiting on the lab results before closing me up!

It is very common with laparoscopic surgery. When you're under, they pump your abdomen full of gas-like a balloon. Then when they're done, they let the air out but some of it stays in your body. The painful thing is when it gets trapped like it did to us.

Word of advice.....Hystersisters are hysterical & dramatic about everything.
Read the site one time prior to my hysterectomy at age 38 & just wouldn't allow myself to be sucked into their pity party.

My GYN's nurse told me to take gas pills (simethecone) with me to the hospital and to take them as soon as I could following surgery. She said that the hospital wouldn't give them to me but that I should just go ahead since simethecone was "safe enough to give to babies." When she said that, I remember laughing really hard as we gave them to my DS when he was a baby as he often got gas bloat in his belly and the pediatrician said to just give them to him.

So, I took them at the hospital every 4 or 6 hours as recommended and never had any gas pain (or pain in my shoulder).

Could it be that he wants the endometrial biopsy pre-op because if it shows anything concerning, you won't be having the lap. Hyst, but he might instead then recommend a different procedure?

I'm guessing this is possible. I have had cervical dysplasia, twice now. He did another PAP a few weeks ago and said it was normal. Still it concerns me. Last visit I addressed my concerns and he said, "I will do what is necessary when I go in and have a look." So the actual procedure isn't concrete and I'll know when I wake up. I'm comfortable with that. He has told me that possibly I may have a ******l hysterectomy.

I am wondering if I should insist on having the cervix removed. He seems to really want to spare it if at all possible.

If the cervix remains for those that have had a hysterectomy leaving the cervix intact, do you still get regular PAPs?

Another excellent suggestion that I over looked. My son lived on the simethicone drops as an infant. They are benign so I will absolutely take the tablets after the surgery. Years ago I had a laparoscopy due to endometriosis and had horrible gas pains after. Thanks so much!

I had my hysterectomy 4 weeks ago. Cervix stayed, and I will indeed have to have regular PAPs. I would have had it removed, but my doctor said he would have to do a bikini cut hysterectomy, rather than the laproscopic surgery that I had. And he told me the same thing... he would try to do it through laproscopy, but might find that he has to cut me open to do it. I bet the dr's tell everyone that. I had an enlarged uterus (from adnomyosis)and endometriosis. My right ovary was about 4 times the size of the left. It was covered inside and out with endometriosis. The doctor argued with me before the surgery, because he didn't want to remove it. It was causing me enough pain that I insisted. He showed me the photos of it. I think he was impressed!

The gas, for me, was only a real problem the day after surgery. I didn't have any pain in my shoulder, but I sure was uncomfortable. The worst of it was gone within 48 hours of surgery.

I was really amazed at how little pain I was in after surgery. Rolling over and going from sitting to standing were pretty uncomfortable for a week or two, and sneezing... wow. Who would have thought sneezing would hurt??? I never took any of the prescribed pain pills once I left the hospital, though I did take 3-4 Advils at a time for about 4 days, and then just when I overdid things a bit and made myself sore.

I still have nearly two weeks off of work to go, but I could really go back now. If I had known there would be so little pain and such an easy recovery, I would have done this years ago. So glad it's done!

I had a laparascopic supra-cervical hysterectomy which means that all they took was the tubes and the uterus. I still have my ovaries and my cervix. I must still do annual pap smears...but I wanted to keep the cervix after doing some reading about potential differences before and after. My GYN had no problems with it and indicated it was a personal preference as long as there wasn't an immediate disease related reason and there wasn't.

Do whatever you are comfortable with...but having an annual pap isn't a big deal. At least you don't have to try to schedule it around your monthly visitor!

Here's the deal though...my GYN's nurse said the same thing...totally beign...take what you want of them...but DON'T tell the hospital nurses or else they will take them from you and then you'll have to have yours sent to pharmacy for verification and to be distributed to you with other meds. In short, a royal PITA! So, I didn't and just kept them in my drawer and took every 4 hours or so for 2 days to make sure I didn't get gas pains. I had no gas pains at all...and didn't feel or look bloated either.

Ask your doc (or his nurse, if she's any good) what they recommend. I know I'm glad I had them and to this day I adore Sharon, my doc's nurse, because she's so practical!

Even if you have your cervix out, you should still see your gyno once a year. I had just about everything out that could come out due to endo....best decision I ever made.

I got good info from Hystersisters....just didn't read the really negative posts. The posts that gave information were valuable, you just have to remember that most people will post complaints. Those ones I skipped .

I had a total hysterectomy about 6 years ago and still get regular Pap tests. My gyno explained to me that there is still some cervical tissue left, etc. I moved to Florida about 4 years ago and the gyno down here is still doing the annual exams, so I guess there's truth in it.

Ok, so I had the uterine biopsy yesterday. I prepared for worse. Yes, it hurt but it was short-lived and I survived it.
Will have the results in 5 days and hysterectomy is scheduled for the 27th.

One nerve wracking event down, one to go. Thanks for all the terrific feedback! You gals are the best!

So the biopsy results arent back yet. I'm told they will be by tomorrow. Surgery is Tuesday. Did all the pre-testing and have been cleared by my MD. Two more sleeps...If I can get any!

Good luck. I was taken by ambulance Friday about 4 am due to a ruptured cyst. This is the 4th in 6 months and I am sick of it. I still have the 2 endometriomas on both ovaries, endometriosis and now dealing with an awful feeling abdomen from all the infection and fluids that came with the rupture. The Dr. said I will need a complete hysterectomy and maybe she can save the ovaries. Today was my pre op visit. I wish you a speedy recovery and please let us know how you are when you are able.

Your post brings back memories! My gyn removed 1 cup of fluid behind my bladder somewhere from ruptured cysts. He tried removing 1 ovary, then had to remove the other one because of continuing problems. I had told pre surgery that if the other ovary was bad, just take out the whole mess, so he did. My 30's were a very bad time physically for me because of this.
