I booked my free dining package through a travel agent. But, I got thinking, could I ask this non-AAA agent to see if I could get a AAA discount and perks, or would I have to book directly through AAA (by the way the AAA travel agents in my area have been HORRIBLE)

Yes, they can ask for AAA discounts on your room. However, the rest of the perks that you'd get for AAA membership (parking passes, etc.) you'd have to get booking through AAA.

You cannot get a AAA discount even through an AAA TA if you already have the free dining - Darn that Disney for wanting to make any money at all - but they will not allow stacking of discounts - one to a customer.

Not only can you not stack the discounts (Trekker's right), you also need an AAA agent to do the actual booking of a package with the AAA discount. Other travel agents or Disney direct can give you an AAA discount on a room only reservation, but if you want the package with AAA discount, you need to go through AAA directly. If you're going during free dining, that's a better discount than AAA offers, so you're ahead there.

ok mabe this is a dumb question but if i make a room only reservation now and ask the disney travel operator for a AAA discount - will i lose that discount if i later add a MYW package?

Yes because the Disney travel operator cannot give you the AAA rate with a package. You need to go through an AAA agent for that. So the Disney operator would likely convert your room only (with AAA discount) to the standard package (without AAA). If there is a Disney promotion going on, like say free hoppers and water parks or something, the Disney operator can give you that discount, which is often better than the AAA discount anyway, but the Disney operators cannot give you the AAA discount with the package.

Also, another reason to book through AAA is that you do get perks. There's a discount for shopping at DTD, the special parking section if you need that, and the free Storytime in MK. Those are only for people who book a package through AAA.

My experience is that if a code comes out it is usually a better deal than what you would get from AAA. :confused3

You don't have to use a local AAA agent. If the ones around you are really bad, just ask here and someone will have a really terriffic one. I had a top notch, but she left AAA. My new one is still in the learning stage and I have to tell her things.
