A question about toddlers and BM's..open with caution!

Poor DD would cry when it was time for a BM. She could only relax enough to poop in a warm bathtub and it was still pretty traumatic. We went through hell. Dr.s were no help.
Then my DS went to a Bowel retraining course with her two children who had the same problem and her kids were prescribed miralax.
Asked my ped. for prescription and dd can poop without pain.

Chiropractors can "adjust" not "crack" little ones to supposedly get their systems flowing so to speak. I didn't say I believed it would work but I would try that before something drastic.

My husband is a chiropractor and you are right birdiesunshine. If she's having problems because her spine is out of alignment, going to a chiropractor may help. We have 3 kids and my DH has been adjusting all of them since they were 3 days old. There's no pain involved and it's all very safe as long as you are going to a liscenced doctor of chiropractic (DC). Feel free to PM me if you have any questions about it at all.
P.S. They call it adjusting for everyone. DH hates when people ask how the back-cracking is going! LOL!!

Another one with a child who was on Miralax....worked wonders for him. He had the stretching problem (encopresis) as well and it was horrible for him. Good luck, just dont let it go too long.

No answers here but you may want to post on the Disney for Families board.

her spine is out of alignment

She's a toddler..how can her spine be out of alignment?

I wouldn't trust the chiropractors if I were you, birdiesunshine. They are pretty much quacks who do nothing and say they did something.

Because she IS a toddler.

Does your child move around? Your spine can be out of alignment from that. It can also be out of alignment from the birth process. Ever see a Doctor pull a baby out of the mother? Causes misalignment. Running, jumping, everyday playing all cause misalignment. You don't have to be 80 to have spinal problems.

How many Chiropractors have you been too? And how long did you continue treatment?

I personally witnessed a little girl in DH's office. She was doubled over from constipation (Mom gave her a lot of cheese). She was crying hysterically. DH adjusted her and she started farting like you wouldn't believe! They later told my DH that she had a bowel movement 1 hour after she was home.

Thanks JennLynn! It's frustrating when people who don't have any experience or have one bad experience with a chiropractor (or someone they know has) calls them quacks. It makes me mad.
I had a bad experience with our first pediatrician we had. It 's a long story, I'm not going to go into it. Does that mean I think all pediatricians are quacks?! Of course not, I just went out and found a different one. You can find people who are not good at their jobs in EVERY profession, it doesn't make everyone else in that profession a "quack".
The OtherVillianess -- If you choose not to visit a chiropractor, fine, but don't say things that are obviously not true. Many people are helped by chiropractors every day, including many children. Everything JennLynn says is true. Sorry if you don't believe it.

Wow, I can't believe the calling of ALL chiros quacks...I worked for one for over two years, and while I did go in there with no intentions of getting adjusted (just a personal preference thing, since I'm young and fairly athletic with no history of back or any other problems, other than a bum ankle), I learned myself how well they can work...The Thursday before I was leaving for Disney in March of '03 (driving the 5 hrs to my house Friday, then the 11 to Disney Saturday, so all those hours in a car) I went in to work at 8, with no problems. Around 9, my neck started to get so bad I couldn't even move. Then it started HURTING. Finally, a patient insisted I get adjusted, and I hadn't even said anything, it was just obvious. I'm not going to claim it was a miracle immediate healing, because that wouldn't be true, but it did give me enough relief to drive myself home and survive the rest of the day. He barely touched me before knowing what was wrong. Chiropractors do provide relief for many many people, including children, but there are a few bad eggs in chiropractics. I'm a future psychologist and I'm sure that there are plenty of bad eggs in that field too, but I hope I'm never labeled a quack for the mistakes of a few others.

Wrong on both counts.:)

Children can be out of alignment more than adults. I've had many expieriences with this. Little girl woke up, couldn't move her neck without extreme and I am talking extreme pain. Took her to 1 chiro, charged us $150. Did absolutely NOTHING. Found another one after 1 more day of extreme pain (poor thing), and let me tell you, he adjusted her and she walked out of there almost perfect. Happy and smiling, and able to move her neck! Ever since then I have believed in Chiropractors.
I use the same chiropractor and he doesnt use his hands or anything. He uses a little tool that pokes me back into alignment. Doesnt hurt, tickles mostly. I can ALWAYS tell a difference and I feel so much better after. I go every 2 months or so. Because I know when I need it. It is only $10-30 a trip for ours so we love him dearly.:p
When we lived in TX for a year we would always come to him on our way to WDW.

I also recommend seeing a peds gastroenterologist. If there is no reason for meds, they won't have you use them.

If she is not in pain and stools daily or so, she may be normal. If she does not have to strain, do you hear grunting and such for more than a few seconds, they may just have you adjust her diet somewhat.

Don't use mineral oil. It blocks the fat soluble vitamins (A,D,E,K)and can lead to big problems. Without D she won't be able to metabolize calcium properly. Truely, go to another doctor.

Maybe too much dairy?

My 2.5 year old has marbles too. But, she goes everyday and doesn't seem to be in any pain or strain at all. She does drink, probably too much, milk. We're seeing the doctor tomorrow (baby's 6 month appt) and I'll ask him about my DD. I'll report back.

(did you ever think you would be SO interested in another person's poop before you had kids?) :D

Wow! This thread is literally 3 pages of ........ eh, nevermind. ;)

We have the opposite problem. We always have loose stools and the doc said toddler BM's aren't pretty and not to worry too much.

My son had this problem for a while. . .worse, really. . .he couldn't go at all. I tried every food there was but was reluctant to put him on laxatives.

Fiber One cereal was AMAZING. He loved the flavor, and it worked when NOTHING else did--not fiber supplements, not bran cereal, not citricel. . .etc.

Anyways, the cereal tasted fine, but I sprinkled a bit of sugar on it anyways. . .in two days, he was fine. From then on he was fine, too. He has outgrown the problem now, and doesn't need any supplements at all.

I'd have pm'd you but alas, no pm. You are describing my son's
toddler years to a T. He finally developed encopresis. You can
look that up on the internet, it's not a great thing to have.
Water and fiber are pretty important. Children need grams of
fiber that equal their age plus 5 daily. Fruit fiber is the best kind.
Don't just all of a sudden add 7 grams of fiber to her diet either
as this will cause as much trouble. Plenty of water-juice isn't
water as it sometimes causes what you already have. Pain
will keep kids from trying to go-hard stool is painful-holding back
on going causes encopresis and it's very difficult to get rid of and
is dangerous. Children should be regular and their diets rich in
fruits and veggies. Apples, bananas, grapes(grapes are the best! but cut them in quarters and make sure your child is chewing her food. Make sure everyone in her life is allowing her
to go whenever she needs to. Our son's daycare was prohibiting
bathroom breaks at naptime which followed lunch which is
the best time to go-after a meal. The dummies!
Good luck.

I say go to the ped gastro! After diagnosis and recommendations you can decide if the course is too drastic as you say.
