Since the weather cooled , I've had my windows opened lately and this is the 3rd time this month I've smelled SKUNK!

Whats up with this? Do they spray more often in the fall? Is it a sign of growing skunk population? If so, I'll be looking out for them! I figured that some of you who live in woodsy-type areas would know.

I live about 2 or 3miles from a wooded area, and I know a skunk's spray can reach a big radius, but not sure HOW BIG an area!

They are getting ready to go into hibernation, so they're loading up on food -- they forage at night. They are GREAT to have around because they eat grubs in your lawn -- especially those horrid Japanese beetles. If you find little shallow holes dug in your yard, that's probably the skunks.

Skunks actually don't usually spray unless they are really provoked. If you come up to one by accident just stand still and let it walk away. I've never been sprayed and I've surprised a number of skunks. The babies are the most likely to let fly first and ask questions later, so if you know where they are living it's best to stay away if there are baby skunks around.

store trash so they can't get into it.....make sure your bird food and animal food is put away.....do not let them get under porches or side of the houses....we put wires two feet down and two feet out from the back porches....after a family came to live there one year.....they stink even if they do not spray....I had a pet skunk when I was growing up...he had been fixed and he was a little stinky still.....his name was pepe la pew......he was trained like a kitty ..went potty in the litter box.....but if he got mad he would stamp his feet and put his tail up.....

So strange you brought this up. 3 nights in a row, I've been 'skunked', Thurs. Fri. & Sat. YUCK!!! One night, the smell came through the basement window and, even my burning YC could NOT stifle the awful smell. The next morning, DH said the garage really smelled, too. The next 2 nights were both while driving. I believe I'm being followed! :(

Do they go into mating season before they go into hybernation? Their stink stuff is like perfume to their potential mates. EW!
