A question about renting DVC points

I am new to this site but I have read and talked to people who have rented points before. I just want to know how it really works. I understand that you get the points from a member and pay them and they make your reservation but how do you book your park tickets and dinning plan. Can someone please help me understand. thank you.

You do not get the pts... the member makes the reservation for you with their points and the reservation is yours. You are on your own for park tix... lots of tips on boards for those and you can get the dining plans when staying on DVC, published rates apply. You can also utilize magical express at no addtional charge when flying into MCO.

Just remember that renting points is a leap of faith on your part and the owner.

Take some time to read the stickies on the rent/trade board.

You are on your own to buy your tickets. The DDP is added to your reservation by the member and you pay for it at check in.

you don't actually "get the points", the DVC member makes a reservation with their pts and rents the reservation to you. the DVC member still owns the reservation until you check in...they would make any changes to the reservation and you would not be allowed to speak to MS for any reason. cancellation may not be an option. remember you are dealing with an individual, and not with disney.

you would have to let the DVC member know if you wanted the dining plan in advance - they would add it to the reservation and you would pay for it on arrival. there is no need to order tickets to get the dining plan. (but there is no "free dining" - ever.)

you book park tickets however you want. you can wait till you get to the park - most would order from mapleleaftickets or undercovertourist in advance to save a few bucks.

If anything goes south with the reservation, it's between you and the member. Disney will not get involved in any way.

And most members won't give refunds if you need to cancel.

I rented points from a DVC member and saved $800 on my trip. I was so happy that I have since purchased a DVC membership and now have 300 extra points to use or rent before the end of next summer.

I did the checking on my DVC member, checked her phone number against the reverse lookup to ensure that her address was listed in her name, and checked the county tax records to make sure she owned the property for the points she was renting, and then calling and checking a few references.

Some of the posts are worrisome, but my experience has been wonderful and we now have many years of vacations to look forward to. Don't fret - DVC rentals are a really good deal for both parties as long as you take some care.

Hi I'm actually looking for a thread (or if someone can provide a link to a particular individual post) that provides steps/best practices in buying DVC rental points from a member.

In particular I'm interested in:

- writing up a contract
- checking for references
- any other strategies on transferring money that protect the interests of the buyer

Essentially best things to do to buy points from a member and not get burnt. I know there's a thread that discusses how someone didn't do the right homework and ended up paying financially and emotionally.

I'm looking for a summary on how to properly go through the steps from a prospective buyers point of view.

Just to let you know, the member controls the rental. If they don't want to use a contract, they won't even if you want to. And if they choose to use a contract, it will be their contract not yours.

Basically, what you do is post a thread on the R/T board according the rules. State when you want to go, where you would like to stay and the size of villa you will need (post the number of guests in your party as that will help the member help you determine what size villa you need). When a member contacts you (or you can look through the points for rent as well and contact a member), you talk it over, share information and decide whether or not you will deal.

It is extremely rude to use one member to find out if the reservation you want is available (do all the leg work for you), the find another member who is renting their points for a cheaper price.

Plan on paying about half to make the reservation and the rest at least 60 days before the start of the reservation (if not sooner). Some members want full price to make the reservation.

Don't plan on getting a reservation made to your specifications less than seven months out. 11 months out is better. Closer than 7 months out, and you may have to take what you can get.

It depends on the time of year- sometimes things are available and other times not- at the less expensive DVC times you are less likely to be able to do that as well as during major holidays. You are more likely to be able to get a 1 bedroom than a studio on short notice.

But even distressed points can't pull a villa out of the hat if there aren't any to reserve. What you see available on the Disney Online reservations has nothing to do with what you find available for points with DVC. Those are two different inventories and never the twain shall meet.
