A question about drinking

I am wondering if I can buy my 20 year old daughter an alcholic beverage in Florida. I know the legal drinking age is 21, but can a parent buy the drink and not go to jail?

I'm just thinking of a Margarita or something with dinner, not getting her schloshed!

I know at Disney restaurants they are very strict about checking IDs. They wouldn't serve me a beer at the English pub in Epcot when I was 30 because I didn't have my driver's license at the park with me.

Yes a parent can go to jail for contributing to a minor, even if that minor is over 18 and your own child. as a parent you don't have the right to over rule the "law". There are tons of non acholic drinks she can get instead!

Parents should set the example that a family can go away and eat or socialize without drinking, my dh and myself do not drink when our kids are with us and because of this thankfully my nearly 18 year old ds isn't interested in drinking.

I think it is beneficial for children to see their parents drink alcohol responsibly. We are their role models and they can learn moderation from us. We do eat lots of meals without drinking but to not drink simply because your children are with you sends the wrong message IMO that you are doing something wrong when you drink. If you believe that it's wrong that's another issue.

I do lots of things infront of my children that they are not allowed to do drive a car, purchase alcohol, buy lottery tickets to name a few. Those are the perks of being a grown up.

And yes I know every family is different just my $.02.

That's not true there are states that a Parent can buy their child a drink, not anyone else but a parent can buy their minor child a drink.

An 18 year old (Actually I enlisted when I was 17) can go into the military , get issued a weapon, and be told to kill someone, but god forbid they enjoy a beer or wine.

I felt that way when I was 18 and still feel that way at 35.

Unfortunately I wouldn't want to get the waiter or waitress in trouble so maybe you can make a batch in the room or something.

No, you can't legally buy her a drink. Why not wait till she's 21 and it's legal? I told my 19-year-old that when she turns 21, she and her older sister and I will go to a Mexican restaurant and eat and have a margarita. Not till. She is 19 and in college and I am not naive. I am sure she probably drinks with her friends. But I am her mother and I won't be a part of underage drinking. She has two more years till she's 21, and then she will be old enough for the rest of her life to have a drink. Why rush it?

The reason I asked on the Family board is because she is my family. Just the two of us are going and I know she will ask for a drink.

In my part of Wisconsin it is not uncommon or illegal to allow over 18 "adults" to have a drink as long as a parent buys it. That way the server did not do anything wrong.

I've decided that neither of us will partake in any alchohlic beverages and then we won't have any issues!

As a service member, you could however drink on base, could you not?
Unless rules have changed since my husband was in the USMC. ( he is your age)

Also, to the OP, I think you are making the right choice in holding off the 'ritas. It's not worth getting anyone in trouble or casting a cloud over your vacation. Have a great trip.

I understand the rule at disney but lets not get into it over drinking laws. In other countries it is up to the parents to decide when young adults can drink or not. Once again this is more proof of government trying to tell us how to raise kids. Now I know someone will post about how they know someone who had something terrible happen to them due to alcohol. Sorry to hear that but I think most 20 year olds can handle a drink or 2 or 3 out with their mom. My advice would be to obey the rules at disney and in public and enjoy yourself however you like at home.
