~ A PTR for a CAMPING Trip That Might Never Be ~ *TR Started (link inside)*

One year ago, we were on our way traveling to Disney World. It was our second trip and it turned out to be a great one. :thumbsup2

I thought it would be fun to go back in time. Here are some pictures of our last visit.

Your family is so cute having all that fun at Disney World! I can't wait for you to go again!!!

Me either Jackie! :cool1:

**Another Moving Update***

Chuck finally got in touch with the detailer yesterday and this is basically what was said:

Chuck has to either go on a ship or do an IA, which is a one year tour somewhere overseas in a combat zone (he most likely wouldn't really be in a combat zone - just one that is considered to be because of its location). He will probably choose a ship. They also will not move our family overseas because it would be too costly due to our "large" family size. We also found out that he has to do TWO of these types of tours. They're suppose to do two sea/overseas tours and then one stateside shore duty. I guess this is a new rule for 2009. It would have been nice if we'd learned about it before so we wouldn't have wasted a ton of time choosing things we couldn't get.

So, we know the boys and I at least will be staying stateside. Chuck has to check out a different list of billets next week and we're hoping that there's an opening for San Diego. It's nice to know that I don't have to worry about getting Oreo ready to move overseas and all of the quarrantine issues. But, it looks like I will be doing a lot of single parenting over the next four years. I will continue to keep you all posted.

Ick about the ship tours and being a single parent!!! :grouphug: Does the Navy still pay extra for ship tours as opposed to shore duty (not that money is really the answer to everything)? That's the way it was when my dad was on submarines. He used to have sea duty than shore duty -- on and off for years!

San Diego was where my dad was stationed when he met my mom. :goodvibes

Chuck says it depends on how much time he actually spends at sea. Yes, there still is sea pay.

We know we've been very lucky as Chuck has never been on a ship before. Part of that is because of the type of work he does. At least the boys are physically easier for me now (no more diapers, they can dress themselves, don't need to be carried, etc.) and they can help around the house more. I'm sure Chuck will have the hardest time with it. He hates to be away from his family.

I've heard wonderful things about San Diego. The only thing that worries me are the earthquakes.

Has there been any talk about how long the tours would last?

The earthquakes make me nervous, too, but think how close you would be to Disneyland. :goodvibes

I've thought about that MANY times! :thumbsup2

Well, he would be stationed on a ship for 3 years and because he will only have one year left after that before retirement, they'd probably just extend him one year. But, as far as how long at sea, etc. - that would totally depend on the ship. We have no idea at this point. We could luck out and the ship be in port for a good portion of his tour.

OMG, Carrissa that is so much information to process at once! I'm sorry that you will have to do the single parent thing for so long. I've had to do this...not for that amount of time, but it's still hard sometimes. Of course it is "doable", I'm sure it's just not your first choice. When is he supposed to leave? Will you guys still get to do your WDW trip first?

I got use to doing single parenting when we moved here almost 3 years ago. Chuck did a bunch of 6 week trips to San Diego and he reguarly goes up to PA. It'll just be for longer stretches this time around.

This won't happen until June so all is good. :) If he does a ship tour, we'll all move to wherever he's stationed out of. If he does an IA tour, the boys and I would most likely stay here for that year.

Do you all remember I purchased those pins through ebay and then got an email saying it had been cancelled? Well, I was just looking at my checking account and I see that the amount was taken from paypal. I just emailed the owner to see if she has anything to say. If I don't hear from her, what am I suppose to do? Contact ebay?

I saw your post on ScotsMinnie's TR and thought I would check out your PTR. We are also a military family, but AF. I haven't read through all of this yet, just the first page and this last page. Sorry to hear your DH will away for a year. Just something we have to get use to as military wives. I'm surprised they won't move you overseas due to the size of your family, I hadn't heard of that before.

I need to do some housework, alreadly been on the Dis almost 2 hours this morning, but I will take a break and catch up on your PTR later.

Have any of you been to Sea World Orlando? (I know Amy (earthfairies) has and I hope she'll be online soon to help me plan this part of our trip. She just moved to Orlando so I know she's busy settling in. :goodvibes ) I know Keith has been to Sea World San Diego - I wonder how similar the two are?

I have a book - Beyond Disney: The Unofficial Guide - that I've been looking through for information on Sea World. These are the shows/rides/attractions that I want to make sure we do:

* Dolphin Cove - handfeed the dolphins :cool1:

* Believe!

* Clyde and Seamore Take Pirate Island

* Shamu's Happy Harbor (playground)

* Shark Encounter

* Stingray Lagoon - handfeed the rays

* Wild Arctic

Those are the big things we want to do and see. I have no idea how big this park is in relation to any of the Disney parks. I kind of feel like we'll be going in there blind. So, any info and tips that anyone can give would be great.

I'm also not sure about lunch. We'll probably just grab something from one of the stands - not at a sit down restaurant. Of course - we'll have to try one of the shamu cookies. :rolleyes1

Up Next - Aerophile

Have you all heard of the new attraction coming to Downtown Disney? Y'all probably have - I'm probably the only one out of the loop. :rotfl:

Taken from http://www.wdwnews.com/ViewPressRelease.aspx?PressReleaseID=111895 :

Aerophile (Downtown Disney) – In the spring, Downtown Disney gets its own iconic attraction in the form of a giant tethered balloon that will take guests 300 feet into the air from the waterfront. With a volume of 210,000 cubic feet of lighter-than-air gas, the 72-foot-diameter balloon can lift up to 30 guests at a time on a six-minute trip, by day or night, that gives them an unparalleled, 360-degree view of up to 10 miles.

Here's their website:

That sounds so cool! Does anyone know when in the "spring" it's suppose to open or does anyone have more details on how it'll work? I'm assuming this will be something extra to pay for.

Hi,
I have not been to sea world since 1994. Things have changed a lot. I have heard that you can do the park in a half a day, but with three kids I don’t think that is possible. We had looked into going last summer, is how I know. We might do a universal, sea world Florida beach vacation in 2010. If they ever get happy potter park done.
Are you driving to WDW? Do you want to stay in Maryland? By the way those ponies scared me when we took a day trip there. You should try camping at frontier town. It is a great camp ground right down the street. Close to my favorite beach Ocean City Maryland also.
I heard about the balloon! They have one at the philly zoo. I dont know when they are closing down PI, but I know it does not make no business. They did not have fireworks there this year like in the past for NYE.
Hope you are staying warm. Cold isn’t it?

I grew up an Air Force brat. Sometimes we traveled with my dad, and sometimes we stayed close to family. It didn't bother me when I was a little kid, but it was no fun as a teenager. You make close friends then, and the drama and trauma of moving is harder. For my own kids, I am glad that they have been able to be raised in one place. My oldest son talks about the Air Force somtimes. I debate between encouraging it as a good career and discouraging it as I know the movement that will become a part of his life.

Two hours can escape you quickly when you're DISing, can't it? I Dis a while and go run a load of clothes, Dis a few more minutes and then run to the grocery store, Dis a little more and then do some dishes. Grade some papers, then Dis some more. It's an addiction, to some degree, but at least I'm not alone in my trouble!

Carissa, at least knowing you'll be in the states gives you one solid piece of information to work with. I hope everything works out for you guys to have the very best situation for all of you and that Chuck to doesn't have to spend too much time away from you and the boys. That's the one thing I do tell Trent about the military, as he contemplates it - be sure you're willing to give up free will and family time sometimes.

The pictures of the kids are great! It will be fun to see them as they grow through their Disney trips ahead.

By the way, I bought ice cream sandwiches at Kroger this morning, but they weren't nearly as cute as that awesome Mickey head one!
Just boring old rectangles.
Oh well, I'll set my sights on a Mickey one in March! :)

Wow...looks like I've missed a lot! Sorry to hear the news about Chuck, but at least now you can have some sort of plan of action...and a plan is always good! It must be tough to have to be apart for such an extended period of time...even though the boys are older and require less care it is still tough to be "going it alone" when you are used to having back up!

I love the pics of your last trip! You really have a beautiful family. :thumbsup2

Wow. I can't imagine having to make a decision like that. How long do you have to decide?

:welcome: Thanks for stopping by. :goodvibes Always love to have new readers and posters. :thumbsup2

We lived in Australia for three years and when we moved over, we only had two kids. While living there we heard that they were no longer allowing families with three kids or more to that location because of the expense. We hadn't heard that it was for all duty stations overseas. It really is a shame.

And my husband will most likely be on a ship, not doing the one year tour overseas - that was just something he could choose if he wanted to.

Can I ask where in Florida you guys are stationed? Another possible place we could end up is Jacksonville. (I see you have a link to a TR - or possibly more than one?? I will get there soon. :thumbsup2 )

Yes, we're driving again. I really look forward to all of those crazy signs on 95! :rotfl:

I have mixed feelings about staying in Maryland. There are a lot of things I like about it and we have spent the past 6 out of 9 years living here. But, I love to see new places. Eventually I may have to get over my wanderlust and settle down when Chuck retires and live my adventures by taking trips here and there.

I thought PI was already closed down? :confused3

YES! IT IS WAY TOO COLD!!!!!! :scared:

I'm someone who lived in one place my entire life (until I became an adult) and wished my parents had moved or taken us more places. I think it's a great adventure and learning experience for kids to see other parts of the country and world and learn about people who are different than us. But, I do understand that sometimes teenagers have a difficult time with leaving friends behind. When Chuck retires in 4 years the boys will be 13, 11, and 9 so it will probably be the right time to settle down and let them stay in the same highschool to graduate.

You definitely have to give up your free will and realize that your life belongs to the military. But, that's why we get the special benefits that we do. :thumbsup2 And yes, I am happy to have some information now and know that we're not going to have to scramble last minute to get paperwork taken care of to go overseas.

By the way, I bought ice cream sandwiches at Kroger this morning, but they weren't nearly as cute as that awesome Mickey head one!

That is my favorite snack in the world! ::yes::

Thanks Missy :goodvibes If you would have asked me three years ago if I could handle Chuck being stationed on a ship and being away from home for extended periods of time, I would have said, "No way!" But, with all of the traveling he has done the past 2 1/2 years, I've gotten use to it. I've learned how to deal with problems that I never knew how such as a computer crashing, or having to set up wifi all by myself - putting together a shelving unit and fixing the dryer hose. It's a good confidence builder.

Hi Carissa - Thanks for sharing your pictures from last year. I'll have to go read that TR. Is that your dad in HDDR & King Arthur? He's a popular guy!

Sorry to hear about the single parenting situation, but I'm glad to hear you don't have to move overseas.

What a mess with ebay!! I would say yes, contact ebay if you don't hear back from the seller - or if you don't hear what you want to hear from the seller. Good Luck!

Yes, my dad was quite a star on that trip! (He also had a starring role in Monster's Inc Comedy Club.) :lmao:

I'm not holding out much hope on hearing from the seller (although I remember she had a great rating) since I hadn't heard from her about it before now.
