A precious gem of a weekend!7/23 Finished! link to new TR

We were waking up to our first full day at WDW today. The broken fridge, and icky towel had been dealt with and we were ready to hit Epcot and the Food and Wine festival. Well, at least I was. Dh wasn’t looking so good. At 6:50 Mickey and Stitch phoned. We had an 8:35 ADR at Kona so we had to get up and going.

I nudged Dh. Nothing. I swooshed what hair he has on his scalp. Nothing.

Hummpht.

This was proving harder than I thought.

It took all of my “womanly wiles” to get Dh up and going this morning. His heart just wasn’t in it. The Disney thing, not the womanly wiles.

I have to say I’m a bit surprised he wasn’t more excited to get to the park today. After all we were going to the F&W festival. I figured that was right up his alley.

By 8:05 we were at the main CSR bus stop. One of the things I had meant to do was figure out how the bus system works at this place. Because I switched resorts late into the planning I never did research CSR as well as I wanted too. Oh well. It was too late now. I would have to go with the flow and ask questions.

Wait. Did I just say ask questions? Isn't that what non-disers do? I just didn't feel right about not knowing. I tried to explain it to Dh. In hindsight I realize I was probably just picking a fight as an outlet for my frustration. Dh recently read one my installments and commented that he always looks like the bad guy. He's not. As you can clearly see from this next interaction, he lives with a crazy person. He's a saint to put up with it. In case you're reading this again Hon, here's a shout out to ya. Love ya tons! Thanks for putting up with me all these years.

"What's the big deal? So we ask somebody how the buses work." He says.

"All I'm saying is that I should already know. That's what I do on the these vacations. I know things. I may not know much about the rest of the world works but I know Disney."

"Honestly, it doesn't matter."

"But the thing you're missing here is that it matters to me. I get that it doesn't matter to you. Do you get that it matters to me?"

"Sweetie, you matter to me. I wish you weren't so upset about this. What can I do?"

"How about acknowledging that when I say I'm upset that I'm upset. Instead of saying it doesn't matter. A little empathy maybe?"

"Oh right. Was I doing that guy thing and thinking I had to solve the problem again?"

"Aha"

"Sorry. (deep breath and in a monotone voice) I hear that you are upset that you don't know every single inkling of the inner workings of the transportation system to our resort. I still think it's not a big deal but I'm sorry that you think it is."

We were rounding out of the lobby and just as we arrived at the bus stop there were two AKL buses out. Two buses. Maybe all would be okay. People were loading the first bus but the second bus was turning people away. I heard the driver on the second bus told a passenger that he was heading out to the other resort stops but that he would be back.

I took that to mean that all the buses started here at the main stop and went round the whole resort before heading off into the park.

I was wrong.

But I wouldn't know that until later. They do not work that way. In fact they usually start at bus stop 2 and go round to 3 and 4 before heading to the main stop.

So it would seem that the main bus stop would be the worst stop to be at because the buses would already be full. However, Disney had thought of that. Probably because it's a convention centre and all the business people stay close to the convention centre consequencially close to the main bus stop and therefore Disney gives them a higher priority. Because of this fact, during the busy times they had a CM at the main bus stop who seemed to be in control of the buses. The CM would find out how many people were going to which park and magically order a bus for that park. It was amazing. But at the time I didn’t know that. I figured out the buses later that day.

I just went into panic mode. For as I said it was 8:05 and I needed to get to Kona in thirty minutes. How was I going to do that if I had to get on a bus that wasn’t here yet, then go round to all the resort stops, then hop on the monorail and ride it round till the end. And even if they let us into Kona late then we would be later getting into Epcot.

In my head, visions of Tonga toast were getting fainter and fainter as it appeared we would never make it on time. I kept flashing back to staying at POR and getting on at the first bus stop then waiting as we went round the entire resort and then if I was really unlucky we would stop at POFQ to pick up too. The transporation there was a nightmare. I highly suggest a car if you ever do. A car makes POR much more enjoyable. Just my own opinion though. But back to this trip report.

Well, nothing gets between me and my Tonga. I knew I still had the Taxi option. I used guilt on Dh to get him to agree to paying for a Taxi. After all it was because of him we were running late. I guess Dh was feeling a bit guilty, as well as looking forward to some Tonga toast himself because he agreed fairly quickly to the plan. I had been ready to fight it out to the death. Perhaps he saw the panic in my eye and backed down immediately. Or maybe he was still happy from after affects of my womanly wiles. Or maybe he realized he was the one that made us late in the first place. Who knows? I wasn’t about to question it.

So off we went to secure a Taxi. It was a Taxi Van but the driver said he charged the same as a car. It cost us $15 plus tip and eight minutes to get to the Poly.

Here is our Taxi.

bbbba5dd.jpg

I had to take a picture because Dh has never let us use one before. (okay we did take one home from Seaworld on our last family trip but that was because my father paid for it. It had taken us 2.5 hours on public transit to get there that morning and my dad had enough. And the other time my Mom and I were shopping at DTD and took one back but she paid for it. So really it was only the first time Dh has had to pay for one.) I thought he would be upset paying for a taxi. He really wasn't. In fact he's even gotten mad at me for telling everyone he hates paying for taxis. So I guess he'll be mad at me again. Let me finish this with a the "old" Dh hated to pay for taxis. The "New" Dh understands that there are times when you need to splurge. After all the "old" Dh would never take me to disney twice in a year.

I'm still getting used to the new Dh. I like him.

Here he is after arriving in style at the Poly.

Here I am in the doorway of the Poly. Not my favorite shot.

The fuzzy carpet. Probably what it looks like when you've had too many lapulapu's.

So it turns out we were early for Kona. I was hoping they could seat us early and we could make rope drop at Epcot but Kona was busy. Not as busy as O’Hana’s though. That lineup was all the way past Kona to the coffee counter.

We wandered through the gift shop while we waited. I looked at Hoodies again. They didn’t have a great selection since most of their clothes are downstairs in another store. I was about to go to the other store as Dh had found out they could seat us now.

We were seated in the middle of the restaurant. In a row of tables that could be pushed together for a small group or pulled apart for two. Only there wasn’t much room to pull us apart. We were incredibly close to all the other couples beside us. I felt like I was intruding on their conversations never mind their personal space.

I did find out that the couple to our left were not pregnant. They have been trying for a while from the sounds of it but the woman found out this morning that they would have to start fresh again this month. I felt bad for them and made sure not to mention our kids this meal.

The couple on our other side were retired. They were enjoying and I quote “a damn nice meal without those darn grandkids and their nasty manners. They spend most of the meal discussing the difference between parenting now and parenting in their day. They seemed to be quite disappointed in their children’s parenting skills and were trying to work out a way to diplomatically approach the subject with their children. I made a mental note to thank my own parents next time I spoke with them. I know they haven’t always agreed with everything I’ve done as a parent but they truly love our kids and look forward to spending time with them.

Dh and I were fairly silent as we were too aware of how close everyone was. It wasn’t my favorite meal this trip. The food was lovely but I was so conscious of our neighbors I didn’t want to say anything.

I probably mentioned this early but in case you forgot. We were on the dinning plan this trip. Just the regular one. Not the deluxe like we did last trip. So this meal was actually one too many. Since breakfast is usually cheaper than dinner, I opted to pay OOPs for this one even though we hadn’t used any of our table service entitlements yet.

I got the Tonga Toast with bacon.

6652333f.jpg

Dh got the Tonga Toast with pinapple. He had a bit of a memory loss on being at this restaurant last trip. He couldn’t remember if he liked the tonga before. Then he didn’t remember ordering the Likiloi juice they serve at the Poly. I had to remind him. Again, I just don’t think he was feeling great.

All that citrus (the pineapple and the likilo juice which is a passion fruit, orange and guava juice mixture) made him feel ill.

He checked out the bathroom while I sipped my coffee. I wanted to order the pressed pot coffee they have here but since I already paid for a Taxi and we were paying OOPs for this meal I didn’t want to press it with Dh. I did get my coffee in a paper cup to go.

When Dh finally returned, he looked a bit grey. He was willing to head into Epcot with me but I was doubtful. If I pushed him now, he’d be done in an hour. Remembering his Epcot meltdown on my last trip I decided to make a change in our plans today.

I know. A change of plans at the last minute. Craziness!

I figured the most important part of Epcot today was the F&W festival. And since the world showcase doesn’t open until 11am I decreed we should head back to the hotel and rest up.

At first Dh resisted. He didn’t want to spoil my fun. But an unhappy Dh is really no fun at all so I didn’t mind.

The strange thing is. I didn’t mind. I was walking away from an almost (it was just after 9am) park opening and agreeing to go rest back at the hotel.

Weird.

First Dh agrees to a Taxi and then I agree to go back to take a rest. Could it be that by cooperating we were both getting what we wanted? Could this be the secret to a great marriage? Could I write a best-selling marriage self-help book and spend the next decade traveling the country to host seminars?

Hold on.

I’m getting a little ahead of myself. Perhaps it was the sugar rush from breakfast.

We grabbed the monorail back to MK. Then we grabbed the bus back to the resort.

As we walked to the bus stop we noticed something. CSR has bus stop #1. Seriously folks. We were #1. Let's hear it for Disney's commitment to those business convention travelers. Whoo Hoo!

:cool1::yay::banana:

Not too many people are waiting to go back to their resort at 9:15 am. We had an empty bus. Dh fell asleep on my shoulder. Poor boy he was still grey.

We got off at bus stop #2 and had to walk a bit to get back to our room. We went past the Health Centre and a quiet pool. Boy was that pool quiet.

95629ce0.jpg

There was not another soul in sight. I think we ran into one housekeeping staff on our way through the resort in total. It was dead quiet. I was pretty thankful Dh was feeling ill because I had a feeling all those secluded hallways and romantic looking staircases would have awoken Mr. Octopus.

In case I haven’t mentioned it-it was quite chilly today. The forecasters were predicting record lows. Our high today was to be 52. Which is why I was looking at hoodies. I was doubting that I brought enough warm clothes with me.

Back at the hotel room Dh fell back asleep. I read for a while. Then my eyelids started to get heavy. I didn’t set the alarm though. You see I wasn’t supposed to fall asleep. It was Dh that was tired and ill. Not me. A nap wasn’t in the plan. But I had thrown the plan out the window and sure enough I fell asleep. Sitting upright with my book in my lap. Needless to say I wasn’t very comfortable when I woke up.

When was that? Was it in time for the World Showcase opening at 11am? Would Dh feel better after his nap? Answers coming up in the next installment. Click here http://www.disboards.com/showpost.php?p=35119621&postcount=112

I can empathize with you completely about not liking not knowing about things on the Disney trips -- you said it best when you said, "It's what I do."

Woo hoo for a taxi!

Breakfast sounds delicious, but what a shame that you were so close to your fellow diners and could hear their conversations!

Poor DH! I hope he feels better after his nap, and I hope you don't sleep too long yourself!

Yay for the taxi...boo for hubby feeling awful:sick:

I laughed when you talked about the man magically making buses appear....I said to Peg our first morning at SSR....seriously, a guy to call a bus for us....we really felt like we had moved up in the world...that and the toilet paper:lmao: Jasmine and I complained once we moved to ASMu and waiting for 3 buses until we got on....I explained to her that we were fortunate enough to be there blah blah blah...then of course I had to throw in the "get a good job so you can always afford to stay at a deluxe." I got the eye roll.

HI! Oh I do want to finish my Christmas TR -- but mostly so I don't forget everything!!! I am excited for the cruise and I will write all about it. So Tonga Toast!! I have heard good things... might have to try that out. I heard you can get it as a QS breakfast at the Poly, too. Glad you and your DH made it, and am sorry he felt crummy. But the unexpected and the nap and that relaxed trip planning pace is something that can always make the trip enjoyable. I hope you did wake up reasonably close to 11am, though!!! Yay for Epcot!

Like from a baking supply store? Was is ready to use or do you have to mix it?

It is from a baking supply store. And it is ready to use!!! No mixing! If you want me to send you some- let me know!

Tonga toast with bacon...YUM!!!

Also find it odd how close the tables are at Kona. But sounds like you had some good "listening in" to hear!

So sorry your DH was feeling ill. I'm willing to bet you overslept by a bit :)

Wow - I was two updates behind, but enjoyed each one of them, even without benefit of pictures today. I am sorry your dh woke not feeling well. Nice that you got to take a cab - 8 minutes - wow! That is fast!

I have never had tonga toast, but someday I will try it. It sounds so yummy, but no wonder you needed a nap! I bet its one of those foods that just puts you right to sleep. I agree that the tables are clase at Kona cafe (ate there in Sept), but sheesh - you heard every word of every covnersation. :rotfl:

I hope you get the world showcase in ample time and that you have an enjoyable afternoon.

:thumbsup2 to getting a room credit for the leaky frig and dirty towels!

Oh your upsetedness (is that a word? If not, it should be lol) about not knowing all about the buses reminds me of a certain FW bus versus boat incident from our last trip. I can completely relate!

Your DH handled it brilliantly!

I cannot believe how close you were to other diners for breakfast. Well, actually, having been to Kona, I can. But still, that would definitely take away what little ambiance is there and make it much less relaxing no matter how fabulous their food is. I do want to try the Tonga, we've yet to do a breakfast in the parks or at a resort (pretty sure the Waffle House doesn't count!).

What a great idea, going back. Sometimes we need a "reset" button and I'm hoping this did the trick for your DH. I can't handle too much citrus or sugar in the am either (or just in general on the sugar), I'd probably have felt ill even if I wasn't with all that.

You guys are working awfully well together this trip.

WOOT!

They really do have nicer TP don't they?

I'll have to look into some baking stores here.

The couples beside us were giving off such negative energy (mad and sad) that it leaked over to us.

Wow - I was two updates behind, but enjoyed each one of them, even without benefit of pictures today. I am sorry your dh woke not feeling well. Nice that you got to take a cab - 8 minutes - wow! That is fast!

I could held hands with them. There was only like 8 inches between our tables.

No the waffle house does not count.

I like the idea of a "reset" button. That's probably what it was.

I last left off with Dh feeling poorly after splurging for a taxi and purging on Tonga Toast. We tossed the plans to do Future World at Epcot and instead choose to return to the room. Without meaning to we both feel asleep. Well, Dh meant to fall asleep. I didn’t want to make too much noise so I read in the next bed. But reading somehow transitioned into slumber. Pretty soon I was totally asleep sitting upright still holding my book with my neck contorted forward and (dare I admit this in public?) drooling.

I woke up to the sound of Dh’s voice.

Hey, Didn’t you want to be somewhere now?

My senses being drowsy from the rest took a few moments to recover. I believe the only answer I could manage was “Huh?”

“It’s after 11. Didn’t you want to go to the food and alcoholic thingie?”

I glanced towards the clock. It was indeed after 11. It was 11:11. My nerves went zing and I started to dash around frantically getting ready.

“Come on. Get up. We’re late. And it’s not called the food and alcoholic thingie. It’s the food and wine festival.”

“Late for what exactly?”

“The alcoholic thingie.”

“It’s at Epcot right?”

“Yes, and the world showcase has opened already. We’ve got to get there. Like now. Before the crowds.”

I was totally wound and rushing around. I was so focused on not being one of “them” that I was panicking myself.

“What’s the big deal. So we eat lunch later. I’m not that hungry anyway.

“That’s because you’re not feeling well. I’ve been looking forward to the cheese soup for weeks now.”

“I'm feeling just dandy now. What time do they sell it?”

“I don’t know exactly. I think the vendors keep the same hours as the showcase.”

“Okay. And what time is the world showcase is open till ...?”

“9 o’clock”

“So you want me to hurry up and rush around to buy some soup that is on sale until 9 pm tonight?”

“Well, I don’t want to wait until 9 pm to eat it. I was planning on having for lunch.”

Dh finally gets out of bed and heads over my way. He plunks he hands on my shoulders as if he’s trying to ground me.

“We’re already late to beat the lunch rush right?”

“Yeah I guess.”

“So we might as well relax a bit and take our time getting there. Why hurry up to wait in line?”

He had a point. I hate it when he’s right. If we left now we’d be in the thick of the Saturday F&W lunch time. So as much as I hated it I slowed down.

“Hey”

“Yeah”

“You’ve actually been listening to me with this planning thing haven’t you?”

“I’ve tried not to”

“Don’t be funny. I’m trying to tell you I’m impressed you’ve listened to me.”

“Maybe I was listening or maybe I was just trying to get you back to bed?”

So folks, in case you haven’t guessed. Dh was feeling better after his nap. It wasn’t long after that conversation that we left for the park. But it wasn’t in a flurry of panic. We were relaxed, even joking with each other and taking our time. We walked hand in hand through the courtyard to the bus stop. We may have even stopped to smell the roses. Well, maybe not roses, but we certainly admired the theming and the gorgeous gardens of Coronado Springs Casita’s on our way.

We had to wait a while for our bus. But I didn’t mind. I was just happy to sit with Dh. It was one of the times when you remember that you didn’t come to Disney just to go to the parks. You came to be with each other. Really BE with them. It isn’t often in our busy working and parenting schedules that Dh and I get to just BE. I’m glad he reminded me to slow down. I’m even glad we took that morning off. As you will soon see we didn’t get much of the park toured but it didn’t matter. I wasn’t going to measure the success of this trip by how many miles I walked but by the time we spent together.

Eventually we got to Epcot and to the F & W vendors.

81fe7b2e.jpg

I grabbed an information booklet and Dh and I sat down (see more sitting-I wasn’t kidding about the not walking miles this trip) and circled the items we really wanted. I think Dh circled everything. I made him prioritize. The Soup was still numero uno for me. Luckily Canada was at the beginning of the showcase. So we headed that way.

f25279a0.jpg

Dh went to Greece and got spanakopita, backlava and something else. He ate whatever it was before I got to see it. The only reason I saw the spanakopita and backlava was because he bought some for me too. While he was in line at Greece I went to Canada and got my soup. YAY!:lovestruc

620115ee.jpg

Dh laughed at my soup.

“It’s so small.”

86f4e2dd.jpg

“Yeah, too small to share with you mister. Especially if you mock it.”

Dh had gotten me Spanikopita and Backlava so between those two and the soup I was full.

4d7afc94.jpg

We had to eat standing up. I think that is my big criticism of the F&W festival. I prefer to sit while eating and they need to provide more tables and chairs or something. Just my opinion though.

Dh wanted to get some beer. He declined the Canadian ones being Canadian he had already tried them. He thought England would have something to his liking. So off we went. Dh was wrong. Whatever he got, he disliked. Not a great picture of him here.

8e888030.jpg

He tried to finish it while we pulled up a curb and watched some live entertainment. I don’t know who they were but they were funny. They used audience members to act out a skit.

3c8be5c0.jpg

I rather enjoyed it. So did Dh. Although a better beer would have enhanced his enjoyment. As would have a grey goose slushie for me. So that is where we were headed next.

I was surprised to see there was hardly any lineup at the kiosk for the Grey Goose Slushies. When I got to the front I found out why. They were having problems with their F&W cards. The little plastic prepaid cards that people had hanging off their wrists. Dh and I never got them. We figured we would just suffer through paying cash. Which turned out to be a good thing because the whole F&W festival was having trouble with the prepaid cards. They could still take KTTW cards but not the F&W ones. I was paying cash and there is never a problem with it so I got my slushie.

0d4fcf25.jpg

It was as good as I remembered. We walked around looking for another beer for Dh. One more to his tasting. He got side tracked in Monaco and got a falafel.

12160b08.jpg

Just as Dh was returning to me I saw the Beast and his handler come out. There was no one there and we had the opportunity of being first. I gladly gave up first place when I realized running with my slushie means loosing some slush. So we were third to see him. It didn’t take long. Besides I was busy getting a buzz.

When we got to the Beast, he was lovely. He actually took time to interact with us. I had found on past trips that without children the characters kind of ignored us. So I appreciated the Beast thoughtfulness and as you can see in our pictures we both have beaming smiles.

Image0052.jpg

I love this next picture of Dh and I. The photographer caught me in the middle of a genuine laugh and you can see that Dh is relaxed and having a good time.

Image0054.jpg

Image0055.jpg

Up next, more F&W festival. We search for another beer for Dh and I find a new favorite drink. Plus we go on a ride at the showcase we've never done before.

Great update! I'm going to have to try one of those Grey Goose Slushies everyone keeps talking about on our November trip! :)

Oh that was a great update! Very fun! I liked just reading along! And I like how you described it as a "you" trip and how you enjoyed just hanging out and not worrying about being a parent! That is what we are looking forward to, as well!! We usually get a vacation like that in every year, and it is a nice break to be adults! Great food choices, and I love that your DH was willing to take character photos!!! :thumbsup2

What a great update!

I love how you are both just BEing with each other, gives me goosebumps!

Alcoholic thingie

:rotfl::rotfl:

Very wise of you to slow down and not slosh your slush!

Fabulous picture with the beast.

These types of vacations are new to Dh and I. But we've both agreed to make them a priority from now on even if it's just a weekend away alone at the cottage.

What a great update!

It makes me giggle looking at those pics.

I'm awfully glad Dh made me slow down. It made it a much different trip than all my others. We didn't get as much done but we laughed a whole lot more.

I'm glad that DH not feeling well turned out well with a relaxing morning.

Food and Alcohol Thingie. :lmao:

Welcome home!

It was a saturday. There certainly was an awful lot of drinking going on. I'm glad we didn't have the kids with us.

Can`t wait to stand in that line and get my grey goose slushie:lmao::cool1::thumbsup2:rotfl2::worship:

Ya, Ya. Want some salt to rub it in?

I keep thinking maybe I'll try the Grand Marnier slushie one day. It looks pretty good too!
