A Picture of my Mom

In looking for a picture to put on the little booklet the mortuary is making up for us, I came across this one that was an ad in the LA Times for my parents business, the first fake fingernail company "Renail". I'm not sure what happened or why they stopped selling the stuff.

I asked Stephan, the gentleman who is helping us, if they could crop it and just use her face. He said that was fine. Is it OK to use a picture that is 40+ years old? I know I see obituaries in the paper with very old photos of the people. Its just that this horrible disease disfigured not only her body, but her face as well. I want her to be remembered for how pretty she was, not what she became.

Absolutely use the picture! It's beautiful and I'm sure your mom would like it. I know mine would have. However, dopey head that I am, I didn't think of a photo until I actually saw the obit in the paper. Hang in there. This is a tough time for you.

It's an absolutely beautiful picture and I think it is perfectly fine to use it. We chose an older picture of my mom too. That was how we wanted to remember her.

That is a wonderful picture of a beautiful lady with such a nice smile. She must have been a wonderful mother. I personally really like it when people put a "younger" picture of someone in the obituaries - you kind of get to see them in their prime - not just the same old faces. I've noticed several people recently using two pictures - one younger and one older.

When my parents had their 50th wedding anniversary we put their wedding picture in the paper with a big announcement (it was a paid ad). People just loved seeing them in their 20s. Everyone said my mother looked just the same but not my dad!

When my beloved aunt died, we had photographs from her childhood, on her graduation day and wedding day, with her new babies, with her grandchildren and even photos taken when she first became terminally ill but before the ravages of illness were apparent. We celebrated her entire life.

I think this is a beautiful photograph and I think you should use it.

So sorry about your mom. Absolutely beautiful woman! I think you should definitely use the picture. I'm a nurse and I know what you mean about not wanting to use a more recent picture. I often would love to see a picture of my older patients in their prime.
