a note to servers

why would a church fundraiser be selling alcohol?

Sorry for the slight hijack but I wanted to answer.

Our local sports/concert venue has churches and other charity organizations staff the concession stands. I worked the Taylor Swift concert at the stand that sold pizza/sodas/beer. The church works the shift and gets a set amount per worker or a percentage of the sales whichever is higher. It is a huge fundraiser for us.

They do specify if an event is alcohol free for those who may want to volunteer but would prefer not to serve alcohol. I probably should wait for one of those...not for any moral puposes, but because I was particularly awful at drawing a decent non-foamy beer.

:lmao::rotfl::lmao: Oh, I love you. I hate people that give me too much head, I'm grumbling to my husband the whole time. I usually don't complain but.....this last time at EPCOT we were at Le Cellier and they gave me way too much head on my Moosehead, they poured it 4 times until they got it right...lol.

Anyway, sorry for the hijack, but just wanted to share, lol.

If you are of age and have ID, show it without attitude. We are asked to show ID for credit card purchases and don't show our hind ends then, well, most of us don't.

I have "see ID" written on the back of my card. I've lost it twice and had my wallet stolen once so it's definitely on there. Sadly, a majority of the time, people do not ask for my ID... obviously, that person doesn't know how to do their job.

I've had to prove my age when buying cigarettes at a certain supermarket chain, when buying certain over-the-counter medications (Sudafed, cough medicine with alcohol), when buying a beer at Fenway Park - all SINCE I turned fifty. Those are the rules at those venues.

If you don't like the rules, speak to the management. If it's the law, speak to your legislators. DON'T take out your annoyance on a minimum wage employee just trying to do a job, no matter HOW awkward their explanation when questioned.

If the waiter asks everyone at our table to show ID, I will happily oblige. If the waiter singles me out and says that older people are usually flattered by this then I have the right to show some 'tude. I think this rule is written in my AARP handbook somewhere. ;) :teeth:

Make sure you have your signature on there as well. According to an ID Theft expert from our Attorney General's office, most thieves don't take the time to learn your signature. They want to use your card as fast as they can while it's still valid. Also, establishments might not take your card if your signature is not on the back - meaning you can't use it either. The card would be invalid until signed.

I'm not annoyed when someone asks me for ID- but I do get annoyed when they imply they think it's a fake!

I know I look young. I have been mistaken for an elementary student. Too many people equate height with age. We were on a Disney cruise when I was 21. During the Pirates IN the Caribbean Deck Party, a waitress was passing out daquiris. I asked her if I could have one, and she immediately looked at me and said, 'no'. (Rather rudely I might add.) I told her I was 21 and dug out my ID. She looked at it, with all of its holographic seals, and tried to tell me they only took ID from Florida! We went back and forth until she agreed to talk to her manage. She took my room key with her, which of course has my birth date on it and sold me the drink.

I get it, I look young. That whole cruise, other guests were always asking me if I was old enough to be in the Quiet Cove. But that was a little over the top and very frustrating. Just as some people look much older than they are, some of us look much younger.

When I worked retail, I would always look at the back of the card and ask if it said "see ID." It was shocking how many of the people were surprised that I actually read it...they were so appreciative! I did have a couple customers though that rolled their eyes and would mumble angry things...I had to think, you wrote it on here, not me!

On the original topic, I'm in my early twenties and have gotten mistaken for high school age in the past year or so, but the couple of times I've ordered drinks I have not been carded. I had my wallet ready to show it, but they didn't ask!

Really? Is this thread a joke?

WHat does it take 15 seconds to show your ID?

OP- Maybe they carded you because you were displaying immature bratty behaviour? (You know similar to having a tantrum over showing your id? )

Statements like this is prove why I think everyone should work in the service industry at some point in their life. The world would be a much friendlier place.

I was a server for years, all through university and as a second job well into my mid twenties. What's your point?

I was annoyed about having to go back to my room for my ID, so I chose not to do it and to instead cancel my drink order. That was my choice. Nothing unfriendly about it.

My husband had one drink, and we left. We would have probably each had a couple of drinks and maybe some wings or nachos. Oh well, if I wanted it bad enough I would have gotten the ID.

I am 30 and I got carded for lottery tickets...

I was carded buying spray paint when I was 30. I had to schlep out to the car to get my license because I couldn't believe I would need it.

As for carding for alcohol, sometimes it is just ridiculous. I know I am going to be carded because I am always told I look younger then I am. I went to have lunch with a friend who teaches at a high school and was asked if I was reporting late. When I am out to dinner with my mom or grandma and they get carded that is just ridiculous. There is no one on Earth that would mistake either of them for under 21. A server really should be smart enough to know that they don't need carded unless they just don't have any common sense.

This must be my weekend, to be a special snowflake, a crabby old bitty and a brat all in the same thread!!

Seriously, while I am going to assume that most people who flamed me did so without reading the whole thread, I did want to let people know that if you are told that old people like to be flattered in fake and condescending ways, I was pointing out that isn't always the case.

FWIW, I do show my ID when I make a credit card purchase at the mall even without being asked because that is a common request and if my DH would have been asked to show his ID, I would have shown mine willingly. It was the whole "old people are flattered" comment that hit me wrong.

OK, back to your barbs and flames!!!

server really should
Again, the server doesn't make the rules. If you're offended because you or a member of your party is carded, talk to management. Please don't harass a minimum wage worker just trying to do their job. If the talk with the manager reveals the server overstepped their bounds, let that person handle the situation by retraining the server.

People don't like reading what you've actually said! It's so much better just to pounce on the "idea" of what you're griping about.

FWIW I agree with you. Don't card me or ask me if my daughter is my sister when it's blatantly obvious I'm in my 40s. It's not cute and I'm not flattered. And I think we know when an establishment cards EVERYBODY as opposed to just doing it because they want to make us feel good and get better tips in the process.

A lot of places have adopted a mandatory carding policy where they card everyone so they don't forget and serve a minor. Our liquor stores you can't buy anything without getting "carded". They have to swipe your driver's license into the register before they can ring anything up.

That's the way it here now. I was at a grocery store behind a guy that I would guess was north of 60. No way in the world he was under 21. They guy kinda crumbled about it, but thee clerk at the register said that they carded everyone now regardless of age.

I was at Aldi the other day when a lady that had to be in her late 70's, early 80's was not able to buy a bottle of wine because she didn't have her ID with her (she came on a bus from the retirement center). The store policy is to card everyone.

About 2 years ago, I was carded when trying to get into a local riverboat casino. I really thought it was a joke but it wasn't. I had to show my ID and have my picture taken to compare to my license. The very next day I went to Long John Silvers to pick up a family pack of chicken strips and the clerk gave me a Senior Citizens discount! :lmao: I was 43 at the time!

Even if there is technically a "rule" that says card everyone an intelligent human being can make a call on their own. There are all kinds of technical rules I have to deal with every day and when common sense says don't inconvenience the customer for red tape I don't follow an arbitrary rule that makes no logical sense. These are the kind of employees I don't want. I want people who can apply some rationale to a situation and make a call.

There is no way the liquor board will fine a restaurant for not carding an 83 year old woman and that is all they have to really worry about.

Age guessing though is rather subjective--and while someone may have more important things to do than put in pricey costuming make up to alter their image--it's not impossible.

In any case--they will get fined if they sell alcohol to a minor and instead of applying age discrimination by carding only those who "appear" under a certain age--a blanket policy protects everyone.

Buying alcohol is certainly your right--and the establishment is well within their rights to have you prove it. You of course are welcome to patronize elsewhere that exercises common sense as you put it.
