A new "low" at our school

I've seen Senior Pranks (super-glue-ing locks, filling sand into an outdoor ampitheater, TP-ing the school), but this doesn't even fall into the same category as a prank. Saturday night, someone - probably several people, cut down over a dozen trees on our HS campus. These trees were each at least 10-12 feet tall. It just makes me sick. We have survellance cameras, but haven't heard if there was anything usable.

Just wanted to moan about it. I'm glad there are only 4 more days 'til school's out.
That's not a prank -- that's vandalism and destruction of property.

I don't know where this concept of "senior prank" originated, but schools really need to come down hard on it and make examples of students who partake in these things. All too many of the seniors -- who really are still children, even if they're 18 -- don't have a firm line on where "funny" ends and "vandalism" begins.

So sorry to hear that! Then I noticed you're from Danville...which high school was it? I went to Monte Vista about a million years ago (at least it seems so).

YUP - Monte Vista.

The other theory is that it was students from rival San Ramon Valley High, but I'm thinking "no". Rival "pranks" usually happen in football season.

Of course, this may have been done by students other than Seniors, but it happened on the typical Sr. Prank weekend. It's a shame that the Administration didn't beef up security this past weekend.

Wow, my own alma mater. Back in the day the extent of a prank was to "borrow" the life-sized horse statue from the feed store.

Mature trees are worth between $5000 and $10,000 each...so whoever cut down the trees destroyed between $50,000 and $120,000 worth of property. The police should get involved.

wow we didnt have any trees being cut down but i do remember when the 04 class graduted one of the seniors poured cooking oil down our walk ways( my high school consists of several buildings) he wasnt allowed to even get his diploma which i thought was dumb seeing as he earned the credits. i can understand them saying dont show up at graduation you will get your diploma in the mail

now our class (class of 06) the varsity football player were going to move our princples car he had a mini cooper at the time(did i mention he was over 6 feet and driving a mini cooper.) so when we came back to school our senior he had traded in his mini cooper and bought a land roover. glad to see the school pays him so well to make stupid rules of not letting the seniors have fun that year

I don't remember my class having a senior prank ('99), but I know that one student in the class of 97 pulled a big one, and suffered the consequences. He was an "arts" kid as opposed to a "athletics" kid. Our activites director leaned very, very, very far to the athletics and acted as if the arts didn't exist. So, the weekend before the last week of school this student, who lived on a farm, broke into the school and locked a baby goat inside that activites directors office for the entire weekend, poor goat was discovered Monday morning. Needless to say it had made a huge mess; eating papers and plants, done its business everywhere and had come near to breaking down the door to get out of the office. Not only was this student not allowed to participate in graduation, he was charged with destruction of property, breaking and entering and endangering an animal. He was also not awarded his diploma until August, the end of the summer school season, and as a result lost his scholorship. I believe that in the end he plead guilty and basically paid a hefty fine and did a lot of community service, he was luck he wasn't yet 18 when it happened or I imagine it would have been much more serious.

Senior pranks are stupid, students that feel the need to pull them have too much time on their hands. I hope that the culprits are caught and punished accordingly.

I'm glad our school doesn't have a tradition of senior pranks. I truly think the police should be involved when a crime has been committed...these are 17-18year olds and should know the difference between a crime (e.g. endangeriing an animal, breaking and entering) and a prank (e.g. putting something funny but easily moved in the principal's parking spot.)

Doesn't matter if it's chalk or cutting down trees.. These "kids" are about to graduate from high school and they want to be treated like "adults" - without any adult consequences for their actions.. Vandalism is vandalism.. If they're caught, they should not be allowed to graduate with their class - along with any other legal action that would be taken against an adult for said acts of vandalism..

I agree. These pranks are only funny to the people pulling them -- not to the people who have to suffer the consequences, clean up the mess, pay for the damage. Thoughtless and stupid.

I was at a school where a group, as a "prank," spiked the punch and juice dispensers with alcohol. Some poor girl who was pregnant came along to drink her juice and ended up drinking alcohol. There was nothing funny about it.

THey wrote "class of 2009" in chalk on the brick walls of the school. Came off with water and they were told it is vandalism and could not walk across for graduation. I think that is WAY too strict.
It is extremely strict... but it appears likely to serve as a good warning to future "prank" planners. If the school is going to penalize like this for a temporary, relatively harmless incident - just imagine how strong the punishment would be for any of the other "pranks" detailed here.

No Senior Prank for my daughter's class this year. One of the security guards spent every night patrolling the school grounds a full two weeks before school was out.

They also threatened the grads about their behavior during the graduation ceremony to the point where they said they couldn't toss their caps. A bit much if you ask me . . .

HAHA - no one has pulled that prank in a while (and the horse is still atop the Feed Store!)

The police are definetly involved in this. I only work mornings, so I don't know if anything turned up in the afternoon (as far as suspects).

As I read this I am wondering what is it with cutting down trees? We have had a problem with this recently - someone cut down 12-15 trees in the square in front of the school and then someone cut down several trees in the area including a very large mature tree at a local park.

Why chop down a tree? That is not funny. :confused3

Well, Ive heard of senior pranks where people were harmed. So its better that they just cut down some trees instead of doing something that could have hurt someone

So in Northern Minnesota, an Icon of the up north philosophy of living was chopped down by vandals. We have a cabin in two harbors and have listened to all kinds of theories about who did it. There is a strong possibility this is a 'Senior Prank" either the Seniors of Two Harbors...or Of Duluth East(There's actualy reports that there were students posting their accomplishment on youtube, but they took everything down once the level of anger was realized)

It's really a sad commentary IMO.

I just read that article, so sad the 'honking tree' is gone. Hope they catch the creeps that did this...I guess they thought it was funny?

Regardless of what happens with the legal system, I bet the idiots will have to move - they won't be able to live there, everyone will be too pissed.

I know I would be.
agnes!
PS - I wonder if after any criminal trial if civil charges could be filed.

hmmmmm.....well, I would rather they NOT hurt anyone too, but cutting down the trees was the worst I'd ever seen - IF, this was a Senior Prank.

One of the funniest sr. pranks I have ever heard was done by my little sister's class back in '81. In the library, some of the kids unscrewed enough about every other florescent light bulb so none of the lights worked. An electrician was called, and he diagnosed the problem. The sr. class was "charged" for the electrician charges, and they took up a collection. The principal even threw in a couple of bucks...as he thought it was funny too.

A senior prank really shouldn't harm anything/anyone and really needs to be "good clean fun".

Waaaaaaay back when (1985) our "senior prank" was to TP the high school and put For Sale signs in the front lawn.

Our Senior Prank of 1986 was to "Borrow" every "For Sale" Sign in town and place them on the front lawn of the high school. Also added a HUGE pair of Not-So_Tighty Whitey's to the flag pole....Swear to god...those things were 7XXX...WE could fit two people in each leg.

That's not malicious or anything...outside of some realtors having to fetch their signs...
