Day 3 Sunday May 18 A Magical Day at the Magic Kingdom
Our plan for today involved getting up early for Extra Magic Hour (EMH) at Magic Kingdom, but due to a triathlon, Disney switched the EMH days for MK and Animal Kingdom. We decided that EMH or not, we were going to MK for our first day. Plus, if we waited for Monday, we knew that MK would be much more crowded. Besides, who am I to complain about getting to sleep an hour later?
After eating breakfast in our room, we caught the bus to the MK and arrived shortly before opening. We enjoyed the short show that started the day, but unfortunately the kids couldnt see it over the crowd. They werent too disappointed though, as they were just anxious to ride the rides.
Fantasyland
We headed down Main Street with our goal of Dumbo beckoning us. We couldnt resist the idea of a family photo in front of the castle by the Disney photographers, but it ended up turning out bad anyway. Too bad. We got right onto Dumbo without waiting and we all enjoyed it. Joshua wanted to go higher and higher and Luke was asking to ride again before we even landed. We decided that with the short line, we would go ahead and take another flight. Again, the boys found it to be thrilling.
Our next stop was the Mad Tea Party. We walked right on without waiting at all and climbed into our teacup. Luke wanted to spin it as fast as possible, but Joshua wasnt quite as sure. He got used to it soon enough and enjoyed himself. Another hit for the whole family.
Tomorrowland
Toontown wasnt opening for another 30 min, so we decided to take a spin around the Tomorrowland Speedway. After about a 10 minute wait, we were off. Luke could just barely reach the pedal, but insisted upon doing it himself anyway. It made for a bit of a jerky ride! John and Joshua were in the car behind us, with Joshua doing the steering. I could barely see his eyes and the top of his head sticking up past the steering wheel! His idea of fun was crashing the car side to side into the rail. Ouch. The boys wanted to go again, but John and I werent up for another round of bumper cars.
Our next stop was the Astro Orbiter. It is much faster, and obviously higher, than Dumbo and we all thought it was fun. Evidently it was a little fast for Joshua because when we got off he couldnt walk straight and even fell down once. Being used to falling down, and what clumsy 2 year old isnt, he didnt think anything of it and still loved the ride. Of course, we spent most of the ride flying our rocket at the very top. We decided to grab FastPasses (FP) for Space Mountain, even though the stand by line was pretty short, and head over to Toontown.
Mickeys Toontown Fair
We started off in Toontown with a ride on Goofys Barnstormer. We were a little worried about it being too fast for Joshua, but he just laughed the whole time. It is short, but quite zippy! I can see how little ones could easily find it to be scary. Luke was ready to go again, but we decided to go meet Mickey instead.
The line for Mickey was super short! We were all so excited to meet him and get a picture with him. I was worried about Joshua being scared of the characters or Luke figuring out their secret but both boys just fell right in with the excitement of it! As the trip went on, Luke did question some things, but we just answered as best as we could to leave the fantasy intact. After Mickey, we went to the character greeting lines at the Country Fair. We waited for about 5 minutes to meet Tigger and Pooh and asked the kids about going through the other lines for the rest of the characters. Both of them were just ready to ride more rides, so off we went. After a quick tour of Minnies house, where they both were fascinated by the cake in the oven, it was back to Tomorrowland.
Return to Tomorrowland
When we got back to Tomorrowland, it was time for FP for Space Mountain. John took Luke first while I waited with Joshua. They came off with Luke grinning from ear to ear. He was definitely ready to go again with me. When we got to the front of the line, Luke was telling me that he wanted to ride in the front. Not wanting to bother the CM working the ride, we headed back to the back of the car where he sent us. He overheard Luke telling me that he had wanted #1 so the CM called us back and put us in the front. It really made his day!
This was our first time to use baby-swap, and it ended up being a great thing throughout the trip. Luke loved being able to ride twice in a row and John and I were glad that we didnt have to miss out on some of our favorite rides. Joshua didnt mind waiting and always found ways to entertain himself. The only ride that he was upset about not getting to ride was Star Tours.
After riding Space, we decided to head over to Pirates of the Caribbean. On the way, we noticed the line for Buzz Lightyears Space Ranger Spin was really short and just couldnt resist. The line was about 10 minutes or less and we were on in no time. Much to my surprise, I kicked everyones butt! Of course, John might not be so willing to admit that! Everyone agreed that this one was definitely fun. Luke particularly seemed to enjoy any ride that he got to interact with, such as making Dumbo fly higher, so this one was right up his alley.
Adventureland
After Buzz, we went on over to the Pirates of the Carribbean. John and the boys stopped for a water break while I went and got FP for Jungle Cruise, and then we hopped in line. Again, we had another very short wait of about 5-10 minutes. I was concerned about Joshua getting scared, but he did fine. At points he looked a little nervous, but overall he liked it. His favorite part was the dog with the keys. Luke thought the chickens were one of the funniest things he had seen.
While we waited for our time on Jungle Cruise, we went to Pecos Bills Café for lunch. We shared meals and everyone had plenty. Joshua was eating very slowly so we put his food on his stroller tray and headed over to catch the Jungle Cruise. He still had a little left when we were parking the stroller and he couldnt imagine leaving any of it behind. He loaded all his food into his arms, and off we went. It was so funny watching him try to walk down the couple of stairs there with arms full of French Fries.
The FP line, of course, went very fast and we got right on. John discovered a big, hairy, not so real spider in a cage near the loading platform. If you put your finger in the cage, the spider hisses and jumps at you. Too bad the boys missed it, but Im glad I did! We all enjoyed the cruise. John and I thought it was hilarious and out tour guide was great. The jokes were over the kids heads, but they enjoyed seeing the animals anyway.
Frontierland and Liberty Square
Our next stop was to grab FP for Splash Mountain because the line had gotten pretty long. While waiting for out time to come up, we went by to see the Country Bear Jamboree. Unfortunately, the CM there told us the bears had gotten too hot and headed to the beach, so he didnt know when the next show would be. Onto plan B, we headed on to the Haunted Mansion.
They werent operating FP for the Haunted Mansion because the stand0by line was only 5-10 min. We got in line, and sure enough, it went fast. We were definitely concerned about the kids on this one, but decided to give it a try anyway. We reminded them before we got on that it was just pretend and if they got scared all they needed to do was close their eyes. Luke was very quiet throughout the ride, but decided that he did like it. Joshua found a few parts to be a bit overwhelming, but he didnt cry or get upset. After it was over, he declared that he was a little scared.
After the ominous tone of the Haunted Mansion, we still had a little time left before our FP, so we chose to lighten the mood with a ride on Its A Small World. I know, I know, the song can get annoying, but I still love the ride. It just captures the pure essence of Disney happiness. The rest of the family agreed. One note on the lines here, both of the last 2 times I have ridden, the left line moved significantly faster than the right. People often dont realize that there are two lines and just pile into the right one.
After Small World, our FP time had arrived, so we headed back over to Splash Mountain. Luke and I rode while John and Joshua waited for us. He was a little nervous about the drop, but I promised him I would warn him before it came, so he managed to relax and enjoy the ride. We had told him the story before coming and that helped him to get the ride a little better. The small drops throughout were fun, and we both ended up loving the big drop. After the large drop, we watched in disbelief as 3 girls in the log ahead of us jumped out, ran up a hill, and climbed a fence to leave the ride. I took full advantage of the opportunity to remind Luke how dumb and dangerous it was. I sure hope my kids dont act like that when they are teens! As we were headed out after the ride, we saw several CMs looking for the girls. I told them the number of our photo so that they could at least know which photo to pull up to ID the girls. I really hope they caught them!
Joshua fell asleep while we were riding and we were all wearing down, so we decided to go back to the room for a while (it was about 2:30). On the way out, we stopped to look at our pictures and got one of the boys with Tigger. While I was working on that, Luke had a long conversations with one of the CMs working there and got to trade his first pin! We caught the bus back to our resort and all crashed for a nap.
By the time we woke up, it was almost 7:00 and we didnt feel like rushing around to get to another park. We decided to discard our plans to go to Epcot for the evening and just grabbed supper in the food court. We relaxed in our room and then turned in early. Tomorrow we go to Animal Kingdom and Epcot!
