A Moral Dilemma

We did this dilemma in Worldview last week. I just would like to see what your answers on.

You're on a lifeboat. The lifeboat can only hold 5 people. As of right now, it occupies 10 people. Who would you kick off the lifeboat?

This is who is on the lifeboat. You need to find 5 people to kick off.
A pregnant woman
A baby
The mother of the baby

well, it depends if the island has civilization or not.. so i have 2 views... if theyre going to an uncivilized place, the people i would keep on the boat is :

pregnant woman - she counts as 2 lives
a baby - never got a chance to live its life yet
mother of baby - she needs to be with her kid
mechanic - build tools and stuff needed for survival
doctor - medical attention is always a necessity



if the island had civilization:

pregnant woman - same reason as above
baby - same reason as above
mother - same reason as above
grandma - cant turn my back on family
me - i dont want to die

the other people arent relavent if were heading to an island with civilization lol

well, it depends if the island has civilization or not.. so i have 2 views... if theyre going to an uncivilized place, the people i would keep on the boat is :

pregnant woman - she counts as 2 lives
a baby - never got a chance to live its life yet
mother of baby - she needs to be with her kid

Why are you so sure that it's a medical doctor?
What if he got sued for malpractice?

The set I bolded is the same set my team and I picked. Except for the grandma, we kicked her off xD. But we kept the doctor

Okay now that I got a few answers...
Why would you kick off the mechanic? He has a good sense of everything, very smart
Why kick off the teacher or professor? I'm sure they can help
Why kick off the chef? He could help you cook the fish, find out which ones are dangerous or not

Here is where we find the moral dilemma people! It just seems wrong to drown a baby, a mother, and a pregnant woman right? Yes, of course it does! It's morally wrong. But is it logically right?

I hope somebody gets what I'm talking about

haha, i know what your talking about, and i guess that means that the boat is going to an uncivilized place than - so i choose my first set...

and yea, the pregnant woman, baby, and monther would do nothing to help in survival.. in fact, theyd probably be holding everyone back... but moral is more important than logic to me


and to answer your questions

1) i kept mechanic for those reasons haha

2) the mechanic or doctor can teach their skills to everyone else.. dont need an actual teacher or professor to teach people

3) most fish are safe to eat.. i dont think i know of any poisonous fish at the top of my head.... plus, you dont need a chef to know how to cook lol

i dont think so.. not normal normal fish... usually, when you cook something long enough, most of the dangerous parts become neutral.... plus if theres worry about poison, theres always animals and such throughout the island that can be hunted... and sicne its an island, im sure theres a variety of fruit ( coconut, pairs, etc etc etc)

But if this was a real life situation I could never do that to my grandma, to see the look on her face before we pushed her off...that would haunt me for the rest of my life
