A Modest (RFID) Proposal

There has been discussion both in the Podcast as well as in multiple forums here about the probably future use of wristbands with RFID chips in them under the NextGen proposals.

This is not going far enough!

What needs to be done is actually implant an RFID chip into every person coming into WDW. Probably someplace such as the left shoulder would be a good standard location. This would be permanent, so it could be used for multiple trips. When this is done, each person will also be given a card with the number on it, so if they need to access anything from a computer (at home) they can locate their own (or their family's) information.

Obviously demographic data will be recorded: Name, Address, Date of Birth, telephone number and e-mail address.

There is a real advantage for children; when they first enter a Park on a trip they can go to a central location to have their height measured and entered into the system. Then there will be no need to argue with Cast Members at the attractions, they will get either a green or red light. On multiple trips they can be re-measured and the height will be adjusted until such time as their height exceeds all ride minimum height requirements.

The information will include tickets, dining and fastpass reservations, room keys and charging authority. And, of course, if members of a party get separated, as long as they know the code numbers for the others, they can locate all members of their group.

And, as I said, this would only have to be done once per person.

Now that Disney is visiting new moms in the hospital, they could actually have the hospital perform the procedure on mom and baby.

You have the location wrong. WDW will put it in close proximity to the guest's wallet.

I wouldn't be letting Disney implant anything in me. A company will have to come up with an RFID standard that is universally adopted (and with an emphasis on security) before they would be putting in a chip. Once that standard is established Disney can be one of the companies that has access to the chip data but they aren't going to be the ones in charge of it.

Steve Gibson did a Security Now episode on RFID implants (Episode 278 if you want to give it a listen or read the transcript) and what would have to be done from a security perspective to make the data on them not only secure but the permissions you give to companies and devices revocable (think public/private key pair).
