So why didn't they just give you the other party's reservation and seat you?
Perhaps because the other party didn't actually have a reservation? I can imagine some very slick people who couldn't get a reservation deciding to just go to the restaurant, wait for a name to be called, wait and see if anyone went up and after a minute or two then saying "That's us!" They are in and the unfortunate family that really had the reservation are out.
I'm glad WDW accommodated the OP on another day, but really, I can't understand why they couldn't have found a way to make it happen that night.
