I hope Xander is feeling better.

If the school has a policy about number of days missed, it may be a case of them implementing a government or state policy. We have something similar over here and the days at school is a measure that the State Government legislates.

In practise, it is a lot more flexible.....as no school want to have a sick child infecting the other kids, they will send the child home or insist that the child stay home.

I hope so. The idea do sending him to school sick upsets me, because I always thought it was responsible not to have him infect other kids. If other parents were as responsible, there would be less germs in the classroom. Also, he can pick up additional germs more easily while sick due to the decreased immunity.

I am so glad to read things settled down for you at work.

Sorry to hear about your Mom, but I am glad she is doing better.

The boys are fine. Xander had a low grade fever overnight, so I kept him out of school today (only his third day). During the day, he never even got high enough for me to bring out the thermometer. Hopefully, he will go back to school tomorrow, but he is already trying to get out of if. My SIL said the public school district here does not allow more than 10 days off the whole year. That seems crazy to me. We need 5 for our vacation and he already took one, so he only has 4 for the rest of the whole year! Unless he is really sick, I am always going to send him from now on. He went to private school last year. I think he missed more than 10, but I never counted.

Having worked in schools for 36 years I cannot understand how school systems can expect little kids to NOT get sick! Guess they want you to send your germy kid to school to infect everyone else (including the poor teachers :rotfl2:).

Hopefully he will be continuing to get better!

Thanks. I have not received a call to pick him up yet, so I hope he is okay. It is crazy that they want sick kids in school. I feel badly for everyone at the school when sick people attend.

Definitely a case of "No news is good news."

Yes, rigid attendance policies are definitely a result of state and federal policies such as No Child Left Behind. But as PIO said, they can be more flexible in application, especially at the elementary level. All credit courses are tied to attendance i.e. > 3 unexcused absences in a semester for a class = Loss of Credit in our school system. These policies are also intended to hold over the heads of negligent parents who keep children home to care for younger kids or sick adults etc.

I remember using up all my own sick days my first few years of teaching due to building my own immunity and I was teaching 7th and 8th graders! :confused3

Then after I finally built the days back up, I had a kid and got all his illnesses :upsidedow

That is what I was thinking. It is not like they assign credits in first grade. I should stop worrying about it, but my sister in law made me nervous about it when I told her about our October vacation. She suggested we travel for Spring break in April rather than just before or just after.
