At the beginning of the week, I wasn't feeling very good about how things were going. Jude enjoyed his trip to his previous owner but his appetite was awful, he seemed tired and he wasn't eating without a lot of cajoling and food that wasn't very good for him. The McD's cheeseburger was not a good idea. We took him off of the peroxicam and started the Deramaxx. I gave him a full day in between. His appetite has slowly come back. He ate a small steak portion 4 nights ago, a bit of turkey, some cheese, etc. Yesterday, he ate about a third of a can of Merrick's dog food, the lamb sausage one and a bunch of Dental DD kibble that the vet said is a big hit with dogs. He had ignored that before. Last night at dinner, he was almost begging, (something he never does) for the rib roast. We gave him the lean pieces. He takes famotidine twice a day, carafate twice a day and now Deramaxx once a day. His urinary tract seems to be working with less apparent bleeding. Today he ate another bunch of the kibble, didn't like the Merrick's chicken pot pie meal, didn't want any turkey but LOVES the Zukes all natural doggie treats. He ate a bunch of them. As long as he is eating and peeing I am happy. He is back "on the job", paying attention to who comes to the door, barking, chasing rabbits and looking for "April" the lab across the street.

Dawn, I was reading your other threads on Jude, and this sounds very good. You are giving him the best care possible. Sounds like you got a Christmas Miracle.

Aww good for Jude! You are a loving family and your hard work sure looks like it is working! Continued prayers and good wishes...what a lucky furbaby.:)

I may sound like a horrible dog mom, but when my Tipper was sick I gave her about anything she would eat. And yes, I fed her vanilla wafers and animal crackers as some meals. Keep him eating. As long as it isn't food that will hurt him, feed Jude the things he likes and/or wants. Spoil him--which you are.

I'm glad his appetite is coming back some on the new medication. Jude remains in my thoughts.

The Merrick is great food. My current Scottie goes crazy for the Zuke's treats. One nice thing about the Zuke's treats is that a portion of the proceeds are donated to dog and cat cancer research.

Good to know about Zuke's. Do you think that they are high in calories. I am trying to boost his calories and coat his stomach so he can tolerate the Deramaxx. I would feed him every five minutes if he would eat. He liked the maple flavored mini wheats and then he figured how to get the sugar off and spit the rest out. But you are right. Whatever and whenever he wants to eat.

Most of the time, the treats are higher in calories. The Zuke's are a good line, so they probably aren't as "bad" as the Snausages/Canine Carry Out type. I would think they are higher in calories though than regular food.

You may want to check on a food called Hills Prescription Diet A/D. It is a very high nutrient food for dogs that are ill or are recovering from surgery. This is the one they had us syringe-feed Tipper. Also, if Jude likes peanut butter and can tolerate it, try putting a little water in peanut butter and microwaving it for a few seconds. It stirs into a "gravy" that you can add to other foods. Of course you need to monitor the amount of fat because you don't want to upset his stomach. You can also get high calorie nutrition pastes at many pet supply stores. These look like toothpaste tubes and have vitamins in a syrup. It appeals to many dogs.

The stomach coating medication I was given was called Sucralfate. I believe this is a version of the carafate you are already giving. If so, this works to protect the stomach. I know this is really hard to go through. Your outlook on the whole day depends on how much your dog eats.

I glad to hear the update on Jude. I'm really pulling for him. Good luck, I hope he keeps his appitite.

OMG!! That is exactly how it is. If he eats good in the morning, my day is "good". Sucralfate is what Jude is taking. Tonight he ate a good dinner.

This is great news!

I hope he keeps up that way. I'm rooting for him.

YEAH !!!!!

I have been thinking about you for weeks now Jude ! I am so happy to hear you are doing better :thumbsup2

Oh Dawn, I saw this post yesterday but didn't get a chance to check back on your threads until right now. I am so sorry you are going through this with your dog. I went through my 15 year old Papilion being diagnosed with advanced cancer seemingly out of the blue too so I can totally empathize with you. I wish there was no such thing as cancer for humans, pets... all of us!
