A honeymoon, a 3rd wheel & 28 days of organised chaos! Sept 2016 PTR - DINING UPDATE 8/21

Woooo....on a roll and getting to the nitty gritty of the trip. Stay tuned - at some point I'll actually let you in on our crazy plans for each day (did I mention that we are not good at relaxing???)

The one where I pulled the others to the darkside…..twice

As the trip continued to draw closer, I pretty much based our park plans based on the crowd calendars for the weeks we are there. Hopefully it will be a fairly low crowd time, but based on last year we might now be so lucky! (and actually the crowd calendar we use has recently upped the expect crowd levels significantly L boo!).

Well originally, I had plugged in all the park dates then realised that, perhaps you can have too much of a good thing and I was worried that there were too many park days (can that be a thing???). Probably, this is simply because we are not relax by the pool people, so other than a couple of shopping days we like to be doing something big each day.

(Did I mention we are BIG shoppers????? Well, we shop big on our trips to the US and then don't buy clothes for the most part the rest of the time!)

Then I remembered that there was a new HP expansion at US/IA (well, new since we were last there) and as soon as I mentioned that to Trent he was keen……not for the HP but because he had heard that there was a Jurassic park section and, as a lover of the movies and just dinosaurs in general he was not going to pass that up!

Here’s Peta and I at universal in 2012 (remember from earlier – we never made it there on our last trip as we got stuck road tripping due to flight cancellations!):

And I must say, we loved it! Of course for totally different reasons that we love Disney, but there are just so many big ticket attractions. And that slippery slope???? Yep….it happened here too….I purchased express passes. Silver lining being that since we had already decided to do the Halloween event I could just do that as an add on a save a little bit.

After a few weeks contemplation we decided that one full day was sufficient. We are one and done people for attractions and last time we needed less than a day to take in what we wanted. I know there is much more that has been added since, but park hours are longer as we will be there at a more peak time, so I am happy with that choice. If we decide otherwise I figure we will add a second day before we leave, and just replace one of our shopping days *gasp*

And then……I did it again…….

It took all of the mention of Dolphins to convince Peta that we needed to give Discovery Cove a go! In my head, this is scheduled as more of a ‘rest day’ than a park day. Well, it was…….until I did something CRAZY – I SIGNED US UP FOR THE TRAINER FOR A DAY PROGRAM!!!!! :dogdance:

We are very excited about this, on our Mexican Rivera cruise, Peta and I did a similar program in Puerto Vallarta…..and it was amazing!!!

Probably extra amazing because, with the hefty price tag, we were the only ones on it! Disney put us in taxis both ways because it wasn’t worth them sending a guide with us!!! It was a private tour! Which is not what I am expecting at DC, but none-the-less the reviews are good.

So there we go…….that means, thanks to the slippery slope, I now needed to add US/IA, DC and, because we get entry on our DC tix, Seaworld and Aquatica (which Trent quickly flagged as his birthday time activity) :bday:

The one where I nearly lost my cool over the dining reservations…..3rd time’s a charm?!?!?!

This part of the trip report reminds me of the three most stressful weeks of the Disney planning experience. See the thing about deluxe dining is that you have to make dining reservations…..and lots of them!!!!

Of course, we are getting the dining plan for convenience (and probably deluxe for the only time ever) so we have a wishlist of signature restaurants and other hard to get ressies! And there was added stress because:

1) The first week I was on a cruise in Papua New Guinea with shockingly slow internet!

2) A 3 hotel split stay seems like a good idea but you have to make 3 lots of reservations

3) Disney’s website kept crashing

4) I HATE the phone, like really HATE it, and I am very anxious about calling, more so calling Disney because the sales reps often have so much trouble understanding my accent L Which I’m pretty sure makes me feel worse than they do, but still……

I did suck it up in the end – after all Disney food is worth it!

Each of the 3 weeks I have strategized with harder to get reservations for the end of the stays where possible. Each time there was an issue online I called and we actually ended up with EVERYTHING I wanted and only a couple of times I was not happy with! Peta is vegetarian so I had been scouring menus for weeks finding her the best options!

So here’s the list all you foodies are waiting for (which has been tweaked a couple of time since the original):

Breakfasts (A few repeats here – for convenience of eating at our hotel)

Akershus

California grill brunch (SOOOOOOO excited about this late addition!)

We were definitely lucky that free dining for some of our dates was announced after our 180 days windows – availability went from good to horrible overnight and so, I have not had any luck changing the less ideal times of a couple of meals.

Up Next: The one where Zika changed our plans…..again

The one where Zika changed our plans…..again

As we got more and more in to the planning of our trip, we had become constantly concerned with the presence of Zika virus in the Caribbean.

We hope to start a family soon (although, alas the stars have not aligned as we’d like and we are currently exploring some additional help with falling pregnant) and as one by one the countries we were due to go to on the cruise reported more and more cases of Zika Virus.

Trent and I had already decided that there was no way we would take the chance if zika continued to spread, and made the decision to cancel our Caribbean cruise. This was especially sad as we had become friends with several people travelling on the cruise. But, even if the risk is minor, we decided that the catastrophic consequences just weren’t worth it.

I was also sad to think that Trent would miss out on his first Disney cruise. We took a cruise to Papua New Guinea last year and ever since then he’s been dying to go on a Disney Cruise (probably because I couldn’t stop raving about how much better Disney is – oops!!!!)

Here’s us in Papua New Guinea (if you ever get the chance, go! It is amazing and relatively untouched still):

Recognise that bag over Trent’s shoulder? Like I said….it’s the best beach bag ever!!!

(Sorry for the photo spam, but I actually knew where these were!!!)

After about a week of feeling very sad about cancelling and trying to figure out other plans, we were frustrated. We couldn’t find another cruise that worked with our dates and wasn’t in the Caribbean. We liked the idea of Alaska as I went in 2012 but Trent hasn’t been, but the dates just didn’t coincide.

So, I thought I had a brainwave – let’s go to one of the other Disney resorts!!!! I started researching and figured Vero Beach was too close to Orlando. Then I looked at Hilton Head, but I didn’t like the idea of the amount of travel time we would lose as I couldn’t figure out any direct flights to get close, and then there was driving on top.

Back to the drawing board!!!! So I figured I would check what was within 2 hrs drive of Orlando, and realised there are SOOOOOOO many amazing options. In the end, we kept coming back to one place that seemed to be a little more interesting to both Trent and I than Tampa or Miami – St Augustine!

So then our trip became:

- 7 night Honeymoon in St Augustine

- 7 nights villas Grand Floridian

- 6 nights Boardwalk Villas

- 6 nights Bay Lake Tower

Next up: The one where we realised that jet lag and driving don’t mix

You have taken so many beautiful vacations! I will be at WDW at the same time as you I believe. Looking forward to hearing more of your plans.

You have taken so many beautiful vacations! I will be at WDW at the same time as you I believe. Looking forward to hearing more of your plans.

We are at the world from Sept 16th - Oct 5th :)

And yes, we are incredibly lucky to be able to travel as much as we do - when we are not travelling, we are planning our next trip! We always have something to look forward to! We are very much the kind of people who value the experiences over buying 'stuff' (other than shoes - that I have a bit of a spending problem with!) so most of our disposable income gets funneled into travel.

The one where we realised that jet lag and driving don’t mix

This is a minor update, but very relevant when I post my final plan. After I realised that we land in Orlando at 8.30pm I had initially (well, for the past several months) assumed that we would just jump in the car and drive the 2 hours to St Augustine.

However, common sense got the best of me, and I remembered the horrors of jet lag…..which are bad enough without having to concentrate on driving.

Let alone driving on the other side of the road!!!!

Thus I concluded, that I would remove the first night in St Augustine and instead spend the night at one of the airport hotels and plan to drive in the morning, after a good nights sleep. We (read – I, haha) chose the Hilton Garden Inn, Orlando airport as it’s nice and close.

Bonus – we had Hilton points so it cost us nothing! And of course saved us money on the St Augustine accommodation.

Second bonus – It’s only a mile from a super walmart, so we can stock up on a few trip essentials (mosquito spray, sunscreen, decent shampoo etc.) which are so ridiculously cheap in the US compared to Australia that it really makes no sense to bring them from home.

Up Next: The one where Trent nearly fainted over the rockets

The one where Trent nearly fainted over the rockets

So in the lead up to now, I had several brain waves along the way for how to make the trip more exciting (as if all the previously mentioned parks wouldn’t be enough!!!) and one night I had a quick idea.

What about the Kennedy Space Center? Peta and I loved it! And Trent loves all things space related so it seemed like a win.

Here’s Peta and I when we were lucky enough to visit in 2011:

(Did I mention earlier that I change my hair colour a lot?!?!?!?)

Well, it turned into quite a funny night. I didn’t want to tell Trent about it until I had figured out how it would all come together so I just sat quietly one night on my laptop looking up how far it was from St Augustine and then deciding that we could stay one night before Disney near Cape Canaveral.

Of course Trent is very nosey and so he glanced over and was like hotels in Cape Canaveral?!?! Wait…..I know that place…….that’s where the space center is……

And as it dawned on him what I was about to suggest he went bright red and then very very pale. Oops…..he nearly fainted with excitement. Of course, that was enough for me and so…….7 nights at St Augustine became 1 night in Orlando, 5 nights in St Augustine and 1 night in a Cocoa Beach hotel (again, we had Hilton points so yay! More money saved!).

Don’t worry – there was also a slippery slope here…..for Trent’s birthday I decided to upgrade and added lunch with an astronaut!

Up Next: The one where I finally caught up! And paid the trip off!!!!

LOL That sounds like so much fun! And of course you had to add lunch with an astronaut...gotta have something to surprise him with!!

The one where I finally caught up! And paid the trip off!!!!

So we have finally landed in the present day (only 2.5 weeks to go!!!!)

And today, I have a short but sweet announcement. Every component of the trip is not fully paid off, down to all our attraction tickets! It is with great pride that our financing spreadsheet now looks like this:

That is an impressive spreadsheet!! I LOVE it!!!! I may need to do something like this for our next trip... It will be my family of 5, my sil family of 4, and my il's which will be a party of between 1-4. They want me to plan it so this may be something I will be using...

Yes I highly recommend a spreadsheet like this because we often paid off different things at different times and I could keep track of what Peta owed up. Would be great for two families going together! I'm pretty much the spreadsheet queen....theres finance spreadsheets, dining spreadsheets, day plan spreadsheets.....and more LOL

The one where I finished some final sewing preparations
This update marks me finally feeling confident that we have (somewhere in all these boxes) everything we need for our trip.

I just finished these cute trick or treat bags for MNSSHP:

I was excited to finish these as it was only recently that I added an embroidery machine to my sewing machine and it hadn't had much practice.

Previously I whipped this up for our cruise, although obviously now it is not required:

I think we will still take this, if not just for hanging up in our room to store small things.....afterall I did go to the effort to make it. This week I am feeling a little bummed that we didn't just take the risk and go on the cruise anyway. But oh well....after we start a family I guess we will have plenty of chances to go cruising!

The other thing I found is a notebook I had used early on in the planning process:

I'm excited to have found this because, for the first time, I hope to put together a trip report after the trip and I will definitely need to take some notes along the way! I'm terrible for using notebooks once then never again so I will be glad to give this beautiful book some new life!

The one where there is only a week to go!
So It's that time.....7 DAYS, and we will be on our way to Sydney, where we spend a night at an airport hotel before flying to the US the next day, and I am BEYOND excited :tigger:

I did do something crazy though....I changed dining plans for about the 700th time :rotfl2:I just can't help myself.

After scouring restaurant menus I was concerned about Peta being vegetarian, so we removed Le Cellier in favour of Tutto Italia, and then the compensate for the loss of a signature I switched Trattoria al Forno for Flying Fish (which I found out has a good vegetarian menu). I'm hoping I don't regret these choices but recent reviews of Flying Fish look amazing and the only real thing I will miss from Le Cellier is the soup that they serve at F&W :cool1:

Just finished up your PTR, and now on to your DR! So excited to read about your dining adventures!
