Okay, I've been on the DIS for years.

Over the past 2-3 days, I have been on numerous threads where the term "this is not a hill to die on" has been stated (mainly parenting and in-law threads).:rotfl:

Is this a new DIS phrase, do people use it all the time in real life? I've never heard it before until a few days ago and now it's all over the place.

Until you posted this, I've never even heard or read this phrase before.

I've never heard it before, outside of here, either.

I've only heard it here.

I hope it doesn't make it into 2010.

I JUST posted it. I've been using it for years (but, now come to think of it, only since I've had kids....:rolleyes1).

I use it in real life, mostly concerning parenting or marriage. :)

I have heard it used for years...but like others mostly where kids and family are concerned.

I kinda like the phrase...simply because it reminds me that sometimes I let things get bigger than they should. It reminds me to STEP back.

that's one of my most hated phrases, lol. Some battles are worth fighting, even if they aren't worth fighting to the death.

I've read it before, never heard anyone say it. It seems to me that certain phrases are picked up and used pretty much to death once one person says them here. A few years ago, it was ending every post with "Does that make sense?" Then it was, "That being said," so I guess we are due for a new phrase.

I have heard it before, outside the dis, but it's not as common as "pick your battles" which is the same meaning.

Has anyone heard the expression recently "in the weeds"? I heard it on Top Chef and then two other places. Never heard it before that.

I'm a server and I had never heard the term until I joined a server message board. It was used a lot there. And I was "in the weeds" a lot where I worked. Especially on busy weekends.

I have heard it said here at work (office setting) where people are getting too far down in the details.

I've heard that line for years.

It originated in the military. Units would be sent to take or hold hills that were not strategically important. They were not 'hills to die on'.

Ugh. I hate these phrase trends. I've been hearing that one a lot lately. Let's add it to the list:

Thinking outside the box
At the end of the day...
Going forward..
Can't wrap my mind around...
Getting our clocks cleaned
There seems to be a disconnect
and my alltime fave - Answering your own questions, a la Kate Gosselin. "Is this what we expected as a company? No. Is it unusual for this market? No. Do we predict improvement? Absolutely."

Awwrrgghhh!!!

As a history buff, I'm so glad that someone else knows to what this phrase refers. :flower3:

DH and some of my other friends are former military. I have heard them use this phrase occasionally for years.

I have heard a lot of people using it lately.
