A Harry Potter question: If Merope Gaunt had lived, would Voldemort still have tried to become a dictator? So in other words, if his mom had raised him, would he have instead become a decent productive member of society?

Yes, I don't think she'd have the backbone to stand up to even her own child, so he still would be able to get away with whatever & would certainly think a lot of himself still.

I guess I was thinking, if Anakin didn't lose his mom, maybe the dark side wouldn't have started within him. If Voldemort knew love and support maybe his prospective on life would have been different. I mean, he was 71 or 72 at the second battle of Hogwarts. That's a long time without feeling love and supported. Or maybe he was just always a power hungry person.

I think he was destined to be power hungry. While he grew up in crummy circumstances, which didn't help, even as a child he had no interest in making friends. And I don't think his mom would have been effective in curbing that behavior; she likely would have spoiled him and not been successful establishing proper morals/boundaries.

Merope would never have been strong enough to affect anything, her son would have just become another man who trod all over her. And he would have had his grandfather's anti-muggle sentiment dripped into his ear.
I don't think her living would have changed anything.

Parents do have an affect on a person, but even good parents have adult children who do very bad things through no fault of the parents.
