A happy day for gays everywhere!

Ever since I heard/read and seen pictures of a group called the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, it has profoundly affected me. It cuts me to the core and offends me deeply. Are you aware of this group? What are you thoughts? I think that for good or bad, it does have an affect on how I view the same sex marriage issue.

I would truly appreciate any responses.

I'm not Gay or practice a formal Religion. I have never heard of the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence. I Googled them. I can see how they may offend some people. I also see how their Community Activitism and Fund raising may help alot of people. I appreciated their message of acceptance, although the way the deliver it may isolate a section of the people they are trying to deliver it to.

The diversity in the World is what makes it so interesting.:hippie:

I agree.

I wikipedia'd the group, and yes their use of nuns etc. could be seen as offensive to the Catholic religion. Yes, they are quite extreme in their views. However their main aims are to promote Safe Sex, to reduce HIV/ AIDs spread, raise money for needy causes and other what i consider to be good and worthy deads. I don't know if Wikipedia has spun this in a good light or what, but they seem to be going for a rather radical way of making Gay rights a topic of conversation, which they are obviously doing very well.

Maybe its because i live in the gay capital of the UK and i see this stuff quite a bit that i don't find it offensive or disturbing. Gay pride goes through here every year, and we are filled to the brim with gay bars and clubs that it isn't something i see as unusual. I find two men or two women kissing in public just as nasty as two hetrosexual people playing tonsil tennis! So this stuff really isn't that shocking to me.

Just my thoughts

I also looked at them on wikipedia since I had never heard of them. It does seem that they use the image of nuns in a not so respectful way and I could see that causing issues, but as wish spirit said, it seems that they are doing many good things and putting themselves in the eye of the public, which could cause uncomfortable feelings for some people.

Hi all, I think this thread may be at its end...
I just wanted to say thanks to all of you who answered my questions. It really got me thinking, especially about the civil rights part of the issue.
It also prompted me to go the Gay/Lesbian thread and take a look around.

There was a thread on that forum that started out asking about Gay Days at WDW and went respectfully on to an honest question and answer format. Cool!

There was a comment on that thread what the media shows at a Gay Pride parade/event(?) and how they only show the "leather clad" participants. This tied into my question of the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence. I want to scream at the television most every time there is a story on Catholics or causes that I hold dear because it is just so skewed. Shame on me for not realizing the same thing goes for the Gay/Lesbian community!!

Happy day to all!

You bring up an outstanding point that Pete actually brought up a year ago in this article he wrote: http://www.wdwinfo.com/disney-gay-days.htm

yes that is a great thread. Education is always the best way to bring about acceptance of what gay people are trying to achieve. That thread is a crowned jewl IMO. Hopefully many take a look at it and learn from it.

I don't know are there several books that tell how heterosexual couples with children go about their lives and believe?

Sexuality and religion are not the same thing.

There are several school districts that have books(s)that tell of homosexual couples with children and how they go about their day and what they believe....is it equally appropriate for a book about a Christian family and how they go about their day and how they believe?

Also, if there is a day of silence to show solidarity for gay and lesbians in schools, should a day of silence for Christians also be allowed? Would it make a difference if Christians chose to call it "silent prayer?"

I personally have no problem with any of the above situations but if one is allowed and another isn't, that can be perceived as discrimination or unequal.

What is it about this group specifically that upsets you? Is it because of they chose to use the word "sisters"?

This really made me think....what are my reasons for my opposition to same sex marriage- none of which involve my wanting to deny rights.
I want to ask an honest question of you and those who are gay.
