A happy day for gays everywhere!

Hmmmm...... How about a trip out to Cali for a double wedding, you & John, and Pete and Walter?????? :woohoo:

If they do, they absolutely must invite all of us! :goodvibes

I will be very happy when every state finally legitamize gay marraiges. For the happier reasons, such as, loving each other and wanting a legalized marraige, but also for the more serious reasons. Can you imagine losing your loved one, who you have been with for years, and then not being considered the next of kin. :scared1: :sad1: How sad and scary is that!

As a strait male I dont understand what the big deal is about 2 gay people getting married. Honestly if there happy with each other who cares. Why do people feel it is there position to impose there values onto others?

Its about legal rights, you have so many more legal rights (in the UK anyway) being someones spouce than 'roomie'. Its also about discrimination, why do certain things have to be 'heterosexuals only'? There was a big thing over the word 'marriage' in the UK, so they ended up being called 'Civil Partnerships', i don't care if its called Marriage, Civil Partnerships or anything else, its the principle of the thing.

I dont understand why people don't want it? If it makes everyone happy, who cares? It also means more cake!! :cool1:

I'm really pleased that is becoming more acceptable. Here in New Zealand gay people can't get married but civil unions in New Zealand were passed into law in 2004. Civil unions have actually become popular with gay and there is a really high number of straight couples choosing CUs over marriage.

Stolen from Wikipedia "All couples in New Zealand, whether married, in a civil union, or in a de facto partnership, now generally enjoy the same rights and undertake the same obligations. These rights extend to immigration, next-of-kin status, social welfare, matrimonial property and other areas. Non-married couples are not however permitted to adopt children, although people in non-marital relationships can adopt as individuals."

I really can't see why people object - its not hurting anyone so live and let live.

Everyone should have the same rights regardless of who you happen to love. I am glad to see this is now the case in New Zealand.

Totally off topic, but fellow NZ'er here, Yeah I know I live in UK, (the hassle of marrying a Brit) but one day I would like to move us all back to NZ. So just wanted to say hi as I haven't seen another kiwi on here before.

I think you may have missed what i was trying to get at. I think they should allow it. What I was saying is I dont think other people should care about what other people do to make themselves happy as long as it doesnt hurt anyone. It's just rediculous that people impose there values or thaughts on someone else if they dont agree with what someone else is doing.

Sorry, didn't know which way you meant it!

Yay! More people for cake!

It's fantastic that the CA courts came to their senses! There's an occasional rumbling up here about legally re-defining marriage only being between a man or a woman, but it always seems to just blow away. Something to do with hockey playoffs maybe? (Kidding).

It only makes sense to allow same-sex marriage though. I mean, my "husband" & I haven't had a ceremony of any kind, yet because we've been living together for more than a year, the gov't considers us legally married. (But we received no cake - what's with that?) So how could the same not apply to a gay couple?

So for your Frodo, beers, mountains, and gay marriage... come to New Zealand.

An ad slogan you can be proud of. And yes I end sentences in prepositions... I also start sentences with "and".

So if you all read the article, then you know that there is going to be a vote on this in November. Theres still a chance it can be overturned. I was watching the news last night and they had a poll of what people thought and would vote. 42% yes
58% no:confused3

I really hope it is able to pass.

Congrats for all of you, I have family that are gay ,and we love them.(sister, stepsister, and 1 great aunt who loves disney always goes to gay days at disney, 2 cousin !) Some of the happiest and funniest people to hang around! Who knows maybe Florida will be next guys!!!:grouphug:

What I said before it is just a political football and of course comes up for vote in November.

My 2 favorite relatives were gay and both died from HIV/Aides. I took care of my one cousin when he was dying. I live in a very straight laced conservative type area (not that I fit in). When my neighbor found out I was caring for my cousin you would of thought I invited Bin Ladin himself into my home. It all just makes me sick. Let people live thier lives. Why all the judgement.

*OK Liz step off your soapbox* sorry it still makes me so mad. You know what their adopted kids are great people too!!!

I come in peace....

I'm glad you're all happy, however, the fact that the court is making (instead of interpreting) law is, and will be, a problem for all of us. It doesn't matter on which side of the gay marriage argument you find yourself. Laws should not be made by judges. They should be made by the people through their representatives. The east and west coast court systems seem to be filled with activist judges who have forgotten what their job really is.

Remember, I come in peace...

I'm sorry, I disagree. The courts are NOT "making" laws in civil rights cases. This ruling is about whether "laws" already in existance violate the state constitution, that IS the job of a state supreme court, to interpret the constitutions of their respective states, it is their function.

Im not sure if its actually official yet. It is going to vote in November, so we should find out after that if its going to stick around or not.

I found myself in a discussion over this with my mom this weekend. I could not believe the things I was hearing her say! She was convinced that if it is passed then it will lead to drugs being legalized, etc. Slippery slope idea. She was also telling me that it would hurt the economy. People that are gay would be allowed to include their spouse on the insurance and would cost companies more money. Im sorry but if I am married and my spouse is on my insurance does it really matter what their gender is? They cost money no matter what.

Ok sorry for the rant. Sometimes I cant believe I came from parents and a house that can be so...conservative and prejudice.

You may be surprised but I agree with you. The people make the laws, the courts interpret them. In this case the laws were made by the people - the drafters and ratifiers of the California Constitution. Its the court's job to make sure that no law contravenes the constitution, which is just what they did in this case.

Peace to all.

sometimes it takes "activist judges" to realize that "the people" voting for representatives are doing so based on religious beliefs, which should not be governing our nation.

As far as the cost argument, divorce costs far more money than a few thousand couples getting benefits ever will. I wrote a letter to the editor about the issue. I'll see if I can dig it up.
