I have to travel a bit for work and no matter how often I fly I am always miserable in anticipation of turbulence. Earlier this week I was on a bumpy flight and I closed my eyes and white knuckled the arm rest and waited to plummet to the Earth. Just when I was ready to lose it completely and take everyone with me I switched my thoughts to Disney and our upcoming trip. That helped take the edge off but didn't take care of it all.
Then I started thinking about what I was feeling...how I was being jostled about and (felt like) rounding corners...and then it came to me. With my eyes closed it felt like I was on Kilimanjaro Safari. From then on the ride was a piece of cake. Every time the turbulence started I'd picture myself in the bumpy truck and recall the tourguides voice and picture the ride in my head. It worked marvels for calming me down.
Now I can't say it'll work for severe turbulence and obviously if you're a newbie who has never been. But it may work for some.
