A good reason to save your gas receipts

My DH is a tech for a car dealer. He was working on a Marinier Hybrid that was brought in because it was running very rough. After going through a bunch of test and trouble shooting, he determined that the car had the wrong fuel. They called the customer and he insisted that he had put unleaded gas in but in reality, the tank was full of E85. Long story short, even though the car had less than 5,000 miles on it, the repair was not going to be covered under Ford's warranty. The service adviser called the customer again to tell them what the cost was going to be (it was close to $1,000 with parts and labor). Needless to say, he was not happy. The adviser suggested that he check his receipt if he still had it. Sure enough it showed unleaded. He called the station and after many calls was finally told that the tanker must have put E85 into the wrong tank. :scared1: The gas station said that they will cover the cost of the repair. If he had not had his receipt, he would have been stuck with the repair bill.

Wow, that is crazy!!! I would have never thought to save them for a reason like that.

I save mine in case Uncle Sam wants to see them for my business deductions but this is another good reason to keep them.

Not the first time wrong fuel has been put into gas station tanks. Won't be the last either.

I always prepay for gas inside, even with a credit card. I don't like the 1$ hold until the charge finally goes through a few days later and then 45$ is gone. When I prepay, the account is authorized for the amount I want, and that much is on hold until it goes through.

Well at the Hess stations at Disney, I normally don't go back in for a revised receipt. But the one time I did, the computer was acting up. And I got a hand written reciept back. The original reciept was from the register. So of course I did get charged the amount I prepaid rather than the amount pumped. There was a 7$ difference.

That is definatly one lucky guy though. But if it's a newer vehicle, why wouldn't it be able to accept the E85?? The Ranger we have from 01 is a flex fuel and they say nothing different has to be done to go from one type of gas to the other.

This was a hybrid (electric and gas) not flex fuel.

I didn't even know they made regular gas anymore. :confused3 The stations around here only have unleaded.

I know another reason to save the receipt - this was a long time ago so I don't know if they STILL do it or not but my mom was able to get an insurance company to reimburse her fuel costs.

It was a long time ago so I don't remember everything but basically she had gotten into an accident being re-ended, somehow it affected the gas tank because she had a receipt that proved she had literally just filled up a few minutes earlier, they reimbursed her that tank of gas. If she didn't have the receipt that wouldn't have happened.

This was WAY before pay at the pump so it was unusual for her to have a receipt but for some reason she got one that time.

Not all engines are designed to handle E85.

Regular unleaded contains anywhere from 0-10 percent alcohol depending what part of the country you are located.

E85 contains 85 percent alcohol and 15 percent gas.

I don't think I've ever seen e85. Didn't even know what it was until I read the post above

i don't think i've ever seen e85 station in florida. But i thought cause of the california laws that all new cars could use e85.
I know hybrid is different than flex feul, but the technology has been around so long now, that i'd think it was just there.....

Hubby dealt with something like this. Guy had just purchased a new diesel truck, having issues, takes it to the shop and they tell him it has gas in it. He freaks, no way, no how...then he talks with his wife. :scared1: Yeah, that was a big bill.
