A futile search for umbrella drinks in Airlie Beach with a hint of Disney TR...

I’ve decided that since I’m going to be embarking on a trip report for out next America trip (which I’ve already started on with my PTR), what better way to ‘practice’ than with a mini TR on our long weekend away to Airlie Beach. Being DISboards, I needed to include a bit of Disney in this trip report, too. ::yes::

DH ended up being stuck working the long weekend at Airlie Beach so he wondered if we wanted to come and stay with him. Because his job involves him working away a lot, we sometimes spend a couple of days with him when time permits. We’ve visited with him in Bundaberg, Mackay, Atherton, Pormpurraaw (a beautiful Indigenous community in the Gulf of Carpentaria) to name a few. It can get expensive with airfares or driving and sometimes we might only go for a night, maybe two. But, it is an adventure for the kids and helps connect us as a family. So, a family’s gotta do what a family’s gotta do!

On Saturday morning DH left bright and early (around 6am) to head to Airlie Beach and we left shortly before 8am. Before doing so I fed the chickens, the dogs, waited impatiently for the duck to hurry up and finish laying her egg so I could put it in the egg carton in the fridge, made sure the animals all had water, nagged the kids to hurry up and get out of bed and organize themselves… :cutie:

I had packed the night before and all I had to do was put our bags in the car and stop and top up the fuel tank and grab some last minute things from the supermarket. For a two night stay the car boot was almost full! How do I manage to do these things???? I had food, drinks, plastic bowls, cups and cutlery, snacks for the car, water bottles, chargers for the ipods/iphones/laptops etc. The kids wanted to bring their body boards and I had to put my foot down and tell them no. There was no space left to fit them in. DD insisted on bringing her own bag plus a backpack filled with heaven knows what. It’s a good thing I checked her bag with her clothes in it, there were no clothes in there for going out to dinner, no rashie for swimming in and two bikini tops and no bottoms! Nothing to sleep in, one pair of underwear but plenty of books, a make up bag full of lip glosses and hair tyes! That’s girls for you. DS can’t be bothered to worry about packing so that job falls to me. Then he complains he doesn’t like what I pack – a mum can never win. At least I had my Peter Alexander Bambi pjs and DD had her Peter Alexander Minnie onesie. :lovestruc

Eventually we were on the highway. We made good time considering it was a Saturday AND the start of a long weekend. We stopped at the South side of Bowen at the Driver Reviver for a toilet break, a cup of tea for DD and a few sips of coffee for me. DS had a banana and I ate half of a snack packet of sultanas. I don’t normally drive long distances so when I do I get very uncomfortable and twitchy. I annoy the kids by singing along, badly, to whatever music is playing and I give it my all in my favourite bits! Bohemian Rhapsody, anyone? C’mon, tell me you don’t channel your inner Wayne and Garth for that one! We sang along to the cd we got from someone on our Disney Wonder FE gift exchange. We sang loudly to Viva Las Vegas by Elvis, and as we were coming in to Airlie Beach, it was time to sing about Banana Pancakes with Jack Johnson. :cloud9:

So, back on the road we go and the bulk of the driving is behind us. I’ve only ever driven as far as Bowen on my own before so this was new territory for me. It has been more than 14 years since I was last in Airlie Beach. We do the Southern trip enough for me to know I have to turn off before Proserpine and I figure if I see the BP at Proserpine I’ve gone too far. Lucky for me, I’m on the ball and make the right turn off but unlucky for me I get stuck behind a 4WD towing a mobile cool room – doing 60-80 in a 100klm zone! There is nowhere for me to safely overtake, and when there is the driver decides he’s got the confidence to speed up!

My, how has Airlie Beach grown since the last time I was there! I don’t recall there being a Big W, Target Country or Bunnings, so at first I wondered if I’d turned off somewhere else by mistake, but eventually I spot some familiar things and feel fine. In the main touristy strip, where Magnums and Beaches nightclubs are, is a lot of road work activity. There are barricades in the middle of the street and detours everywhere. For a moment it reminded me of Port Vila. All I knew was the name of the hotel we were staying at and that DH said it was at the end of the road. What he didn’t tell me was there was the main touristy part and behind that was another touristy bit that fronted the beach. I was on the wrong side of the roadworks. Stupid detours. I must confess that it never occurred to me to turn on the GPS… But, we found it, I checked in, got the keys and parked the car (and made two trips to unload the car…)

The kids and I argued over who was sleeping in which bed. Then their faces sank when they realised they’d be sharing a room with me and DH and they’d be sharing a double bed! Oh, the horror! You’d think I told them they had to marry each other. So then they decided to work out which of them would sleep on the floor on which night. All I’m thinking of is “kill me now!” :headache:

The view from our room. We didn't have the ocean view as that is right above the restaurants and bars and quite noisy at night.

We decided to go and check out the markets across the road and wander about the touristy strip.

421627_10151187227127854_1279851823_n.jpg

The markets were starting to pack up so we just made a quick circuit of those and headed back to the main street. It was really hot and humid so they were whining that they wanted to go back and jump in the swimming pool. We did stop at McDonald’s for some little chicken bites and they had a soft serve cone each.

I felt so old walking around Airlie with all of the young backpackers and local teens enjoying their weekend in their teeny tiny bikinis. When did I become old? I was one of those bikini people on the Sunshine Coast once! Where did those years go and where on earth did those thighs come from? And where did my flat tummy disappear to? Airlie Beach is not a place for women with body and age issues!

So, we headed back to our room and changed into our swimmers. I grabbed a book as well and we got our pool towels from reception to find when we got to the pool there were two British backpacker girls who had had too much time in the sun. They were like pink lobsters. I don’t think they were impressed to see two kids turn up (personally, I think they were a bit hungover from the night before). But we jumped in the pool and the kids made fun of my lack of swimming ability while I just dog paddled about. All I wanted was to cool off.

Eventually I got out and plonked myself on the banana lounge with my book but it was way too hot to read. So I watched the kids play and splash about and eventually decided they were getting too silly and it was time to go back to the room to relax.

After an hour or so we headed back out into the street. Note to self: it’s not a good idea to wander about in your swimmers, boardies and rashie when the humidity is around 90% and the temperature is almost 35C! It was so uncomfortable!

We walked around to the swimming lagoon and spotted extra yachts and a catamaran that had been washed up during Cyclone Oswald that had recently passed by. We counted 5 in total in one small area. The swimming lagoon reminded me of the one at Southbank in Brisbane, but smaller. We’ll go back today I guess.

The kids decided they wanted something to eat and drink so we went to Hogs Breath. I had a Fruit Tingle cocktail, DS a coke and DD a Fruit Fizz mocktail. We ordered curly fries and some prawn spring rolls.

We had a table on the balcony overlooking the lagoon but it was so hot we couldn’t wait to leave. Our bill came to $35 (no happy hour cocktails at 4pm it appears!) and they weren’t taking anything but cash. I left the kids at the counter and stomped up to the nearby ATM for some cash so I could pay our bill. We won’t be going back there this weekend!

We got back to our room to find DH was already there. He’d finished work and had a shower and was dressed to go out. We needed showers so he went down to Mangrove Jacks for some pre-dinner drinks with his work mates who are here with him, and I said we’d be there in half an hour… I made the mistake of having a little lay down to rest and next thing I know it’s 6pm! So, it was a quick shower for me and off we went. I wasn’t sunburnt but still slathered on the DCL body butter that I love using.

We headed down to Mangrove Jacks where a cheese and garlic wood fired pizza had been ordered. I got a blue curacao and lemonade for myself to drink and a lemonade each for the kids.

At first I was disappointed that food had been ordered as I wanted to go to Fish D’Vine and the Rum Bar for dinner. I think DH noticed my fallen features so once everyone but me (because I’m trying to lose weight for our next trip) and drinks were finished, DH said goodbye to the guys and we headed down the road to Fish D’Vine. The Rum bar is attached to the restaurant part. DH goes there whenever he’s working in Airlie Beach so he knows the owner. It was heavily booked out but we got raised seats and tables (like at a bar) and that was okay. We ordered our meals then DH and I headed to the bar to order drinks. Wow! What an array of drinks.

251955_10151187223817854_369943909_n.jpg

The prices aren’t cheap, $17.50 for a Long Island Iced Tea, but it’s an experience place. I honestly never realised there were so many types of rum. But I’m not a drinker so that probably says it all. My only experience with rum has been a sip of Bundaberg rum and coke and thought it was disgusting. But DH bought me a spiced rum and I love it. Maybe once a week I’ll have some with lime and lemon squash or ginger beer. Yep, I’m the designated driver in our house. DH ordered the drinks he thought. I wanted an umbrella in my drink but they don’t do umbrellas so the bartender made me a cute little ‘garden’ of a pineapple wedge, sprig of mint and a glace cherry. Very sweet. See what happens when you use your manners!

So dinner turns up and I’m blown away by my meal. DH always has the Cajun spiced fish and suggested I get the baked Sole as he’s interested in trying some. I love baked fish and have never had Sole before so I agree. The Sole was beautiful. It had melted herbed butter and was simple and that’s how I like my fish. Butter with a squeeze of lemon.

Meals come with the standard chips or salad or veggies. We both chose salad for our meals and the kids had a kids meal – DD had calamari and chips and DS had fish and chips. The side salads that came with our meal was a full sized one. I got through my fish first, with some help from DH with the spine, and I only managed to stab the roof of my mouth once with a stray bone. Naturally, I left the head. I ate most of the salad as by then I wasn’t that hungry. None of us ordered dessert.

We decided to call it a night as DH had another early start on Sunday morning. He falls asleep quickly and I lose my patience with the kids over the whole bed thing. DS fidgets and makes stupid noises. He simply cannot remain still. Then the whole “he’s/she’s touching me/on my side of the bed/breathing funny” nonsense starts. I’m considering kicking one child out to sleep on the balcony but at that thought the rain comes pelting down and hitting the sliding glass door. I look out of the door and see the pool towels I had drying on the balcony are now sodden. Thankfully I had brought in the swimming things before we went out for dinner. Eventually the kids fell asleep and all was right with the world. :lovestruc

Our first day in Airlie Beach went well. I didn’t yell at the kids and they didn’t kill each other. And I’ve managed to eat relatively well.

sounds like a lovely time was had. i'm not a big drinker either, but i do like me a good umbrella drink, especially if it is pretty coloured and in a fancy glass :)

there is something wrong with my brain cause i know i'm old but i also remember being 15 like it was yesterday :) i remember that whole 'she/he's touching me/on my side of the bed/leaning on me in the car' arrangement. my dad literally pulled up beside a gum tree one day and told us to get out. that was the end of the whining for at least a few kilometres... oh, i'm surprised we managed to make it to adulthood.

you parents should be commended for your fortitude and patience :)

hope the rest of your trip is amazing...

Sounds like your having a great time :)
And I am another one who is wondering when all those years slipped by;)

On the Dis, no one ages or has thunder thighs.

Love the food porn....even if the drinks came without umbrellas. Looks like you had a great time; and I do wonder what the sleeping arrangements ended up being.

What a great start.:beach:

I am sitting here chuckling about the kids and bed arrangement. My kids refuse to share a bad. We stayed at Seaworld resort in November (Thank God it was only 3 nights) and we ended up having one adult share with one child in 2 DOUBLE Beds!! Never again.

Now I have to increase any hotel budget to make sure there is enough bedding for all of us. It does make a holiday quite a bit more expensive.

By the way, how old are the kids? Mine are 2 boys, 9 and 11. They also don't do well packing

They're 11 and 12. I made a nest of spare blankets and a pillow on the floor and told DS to lay there until he fell asleep. Then I eventually put him back in the bed. I woke up this morning to find DD on the floor and DS on the bed! When DH left for work I woke her up and told her to hop into bed with me. She said that she kept waking up during the night and finding her brother's legs on hers or he'd roll over and throw his arm over her face etc.

I didn't think to share the bed with the kids, though. We've got a king sized bed at home because DH hates my sleeping patterns and he thinks he's got a bit of a fighting chance to avoid me using him to warm my cold feet in winter! He won't allow the kids to sleep with him at all, so that usually falls to me. Sometimes at home I've had both kids in with me and I'm always having to be in the middle to stop them arguing over who is kicking who. I hate being in the middle, it's like being stuck in the middle seat of the plane.

I'm also trying to book accommodation where they get their own beds. In some places we just can't so they'll have to suffer it out :crazy2:

Thank you :flower3:

So, then I'm 21 and 43kg again if I work on your logic - love it! :cheer2:

When we were kids and dad had to take us to school or pick us up in his Hiace work van two of us girls got to sit in the front and one of us in the back with the tools etc (back in those days when you could get away with that), he ended keeping a notebook and writing the name of the kid who got stuck in the back so there were no arguments over whose turn it was! I've only got the two and we solve arguments by using the middle seat arm rest as a divider - or if I'm really desperate, one of them sits in the front with me :crazy2:

I have also done the pull over on the side of the road and tell them to get out trick, but they've not fallen for that as they know it's 'against the law to abandon a child'.

I wanted this drink at The Rum Bar last night because it said it came in a Tiki mug! Yes, I base my selection on color or drinking vessel... DH said he's had it before, it was not that good and I wouldn't like it so I didn't end up getting it. I was a bit upset until he told me you don't get to keep the mug. If you don't get to keep a Tiki mug then what's the point of paying almost $20 for a drink?

DH's phone alarm went off at 6am and he was gone by 6.30am.

DD was on the floor asleep, DS had the double bed to himself. All I could think of was "why?" :confused3 So I woke her up and got her to hop into bed with me. I thought it was a weekday so turned on the tv to Sunrise to find I was a bit too early. I turned the tv off and tried to go back to sleep but couldn't.

At 7am I left the kids with strict instructions to not leave the room or go on the balcony and headed downstairs and a couple of shops up to the Night Owl and got the paper and some milk for our cereal. I also found a packet of drinks umbrellas! :dance3:

310073_10151187234217854_995473126_n.jpg

Now I'm ready for anything :cheer2: I quickly slipped a couple of umbrellas in the coin section of my purse for just in case...

We ate cereal and lazed about in the room, reading the paper, watching tv and the kids played some zombie game on their ipods. We must have taken way too long as when it was time to go out there was a note slipped under the door that housekeeping will come back later when the please do not disturb sign was not up! I spotted a cleaner and told her we were sorry we weren't ready when she was and we were on our way out. It turns out I had only packed DD one t-shirt extra and I didn't want her to wear the dress I had packed for her until it was dinner time. So we went off to the shops for shopping. She spotted a One Direction t-shirt in Jay Jays so I ended up getting her that, plus a pair of new sunglasses. DS got a little pair of earphones as he doesn't like using my ones. I went looking for a new pair of swimmers but didn't find any that I liked or fitted me well enough.

So, it was back to the room and change into our swimmers for the pool. I took a can of sugar-free lemonade and a bottle of water with me, plus a magazine. Plus, the drink umbrella :goodvibes

549821_10151187520647854_1564009532_n.jpg

It was only 12.30pm and 30C but it was a feels-like temperature of 40C so we didn't stay for long. It was way too hot to be outside. I took the kids back to the room hoping they'd have a nap, but 11 and 12 year old DO NOT have naps I was informed! Where on earth do these people come from? What happened to my compliant little babies?

So, it was back to relaxing out of the heat before heading back out to the beach for a walk.

So what I really want to know is.....from 1-10 how much better are the drinks now you've got umbrellas?

Great report! We used to go up to Airlie when I was a teenager, beautiful area :)

Sunday was the most disgustingly hot day of all! I looked at my WeatherZone app around 12.30 and while it was in the low 30's the feels-like temperature was low 40's! It was just way too hot to venture out of the hotel room, but venture out we did.

We made another trip down to the pool to cool off. After paddling about a bit I lazed out on the banana lounge but it was ridiculously hot and I had to tell the kids it was time to go. So back to the room for a while where I played around on the computer for a while and the kids went back to killing zombies on their ipods. DH called and said they'd be working a bit later than planned and asked me to book dinner for 6 of us at Cactus Jacks. So, to cut a long story short, many calls were made and bookings secured only to find out he meant for Hogs Breath as one of the guys he works with doesn't like Cactus Jacks :sad2: In the end, the right bookings at the right location were made and the kids and I headed off to the swimming lagoon for a swim as they wanted to try it out.

We passed the little playground under the most beautiful shady tree, but we didn't stop - the mosquitos would love it in there.

556432_10151206645087854_429879592_n.jpg

The lagoon was so hot. I didn't go in the water but I forgot my hat so I had to go and buy a new one. I never go anywhere without my hat (it's a Disneyland floppy brim one) and I can't understand why I walked out without it :sad2: So, $40 later I am now the owner of a light blue floppy Seafolly straw hat. It is nice though.

I parked myself off to the side of water in a tiny amount of shade under a palm tree, close to where the lifeguards were - if they made a run for someone in the water it would more than likely be my kids they were running for and I wanted to keep close. I stifled a snorted laugh when I heard a father nearby call out, "Chardonnay, come and pick up your towel!" as they were leaving. Really? I thought that was just a cliche name heard on Snog, Marry, Avoid! I wonder if they spelled Chardonnay the right way or with some 'yooneek' combination of letters... :scared1:

An hour was all that I could take down there. It was a skin cancer breeding ground with all of the southern tourists and backpackers baking themselves in the boiling sun. I just wanted to shake them and tell them what a big mistake they were making by laying there turning red :confused3 You'd think the message would get through, but there you go.

The kids decided they wanted an ice cream so we headed to New Zealand Natural. The kids ordered a cookies and cream ice cream and I got a lemon and lime sorbet. Now, I've been working on cutting out sugar in my diet and there was nothing in the store that I could happily eat, but I was really hot (the sweat was running down my back by now and I don't like being sweaty at all, even when I go to the gym I'm forever wiping it off myself - ick) and I just had to. I convinced myself that a sorbet was probably healthier than ice cream

44737_10151206628372854_1692524262_n.jpg

We made our way through the barricades in the road for the roadworks and chose to walk back along the beach path in search of cooling breezes.

This is what is showing at the local cinema at the moment :woohoo:

424796_10151206640932854_538178671_n.jpg

Back in the room we jumped back on our devices and had Channel 7 on in the background, listening to the floods situation, but then Channel 7 went off air and I must admit I was too engrossed in what I was reading online it took me a while to work out what had happened! Then the wireless internet went down and we couldn't log on. So we put it on Nickelodeon popcorn:: We hung around in the hotel room until it was time to leave for dinner. But, it was 5.30pm and dinner was booked for 6.30pm and no sign of DH. I left a voice mail message. At 6pm I left another voice mail message. At 6.15pm I deliberated about leaving without him and hope they would show up soon after or cancelling. At 6.25pm I decided I was hungry and we would leave, so I left a note on the tv where I thought he'd see it when he got back and we left. Hogs Breath isn't a far walk so we were there shortly after 6.30pm. I couldn't see DH's car in the car park as we left and thought they were just running a bit late.

I was not impressed with the staff at Hogs Breath at all. We arrived and said the rest of the party were coming along shortly as they hadn't finished work yet. The girl told me that as we'd booked for six people if they didn't arrive soon they'd move us to a table for three :confused3 It wasn't even packed! In fact, there were more empty tables than there were occupied ones. About 15 minutes had gone by and one of the other work mates of DH arrived and he was surprised nobody else was with us. We kept on checking outside to see if we could see the others. We overheard the staff telling people who were going up to the counter to pay for their meals that there was no eftpos facilities available and the ATMs in the streets were not working either. Too bad if you didn't have a credit card that they could swipe in the manual machines. There were a lot of annoyed diners on Sunday night! That is when we discovered the reason for there being no phones or internet - there was no Telstra service. Obviously, most of the ATMs and eftpos machines used Telstra.

We eventually gave up waiting for everyone else and decided to head back to the hotel to look for them. We found them two blocks away! I bet DH had a little rest of his eyes before his shower...:rolleyes1 We said that there was no airconditioning in Hogs Breath, no ATMs or eftpos and we decided to eat elsewhere. We ended up going back to Mangrove Jacks - at least we could charge back to our room. DH and I had enough cash on us for dinner and drinks but the others didn't. And Mangrove Jacks was airconditioned! By 8pm it was still in the mid-30's :sad2:

Everyone else ordered some woodfired pizzas to share. I ordered seafood risotto.

I had another blue drink - with an umbrella stuck in the straw (I keep a couple in the coin section of my purse for just these occasions now :yay:) and then blew $20 in just under 2 minutes on the poker machines. I think it was faulty. I played 1 credit on 25 lines on the 1c machines and not once did I get any credits! So I went back out and got another $20 from DH and had another go. I walked out with $2 out of $40 and that was only because I cashed out when I got down to the last $2 :rotfl2: I rarely ever gamble so I didn't get too upset about my loss.

602810_10151206638857854_539493035_n.jpg

Silly machines.

So I resigned myself to watching some Robbie Williams on the video screen while talking to the others about our holiday plans. I have learnt from this discussion that DH has absolutely NO IDEA about anything that we are doing other than the cruise, WDW, Montana and DLR :sad2: I suppose he just goes along with whatever I say without actually registering what I've said :cloud9:

The pizzas came out but I didn't try them.

164402_10151206634702854_973777637_n.jpg

This is the hot dog pizza.

Then finally, my risotto came out.

533698_10151206636282854_1463447569_n.jpg

A disappointment at almost $29. It was dry and I only found one scallop, three small prawns and the mussels in it. It was too peppery and I couldn't bring myself to eat it all. In the end I took the kids with me and we went back up to the room. I think I was out of sorts that we didn't go to Cactus Jacks and I'd been looking forward to going all weekend. So the kids and I had an early night, DH came back about 10pm and went straight to sleep as he had to work again in the morning, the public holiday. I decided that we would leave shortly after him as I was worried about the dogs in the kennel with the heat being as bad as it was. We had a forecast temperature of 37C on Sunday and the Monday was going to be just as bad.

I made DS sleep on the floor until he and his sister fell asleep then put him back into bed

DH left at 6.30am and we left an hour or so later.

I love looking at hotel rooms in other people's trip reports. I love imagining myself staying there. In reality this is how it would be if I was...

This was as we were packing up to leave but I'm just keepin' it real

I didn't want to bother with making cereal so DH took the milk and put it in his car fridge and the kids and I pulled in to a McDonald's as we were heading out of Airlie Beach. Still no eftpos so I dipped in to my meagre collection of money to pay for the 2 hash browns and 3 sausage mc muffins. I had to get fuel for the trip home and put in $20 knowing there was no eftpos. It wasn't until I was leaving the petrol station that I realised I could have got them to process the Amex manually! Silly me.

The trip home was relatively uneventful if not boring. I had promised to stop and visit some friends in a town half way but the thought of my poor doggies sitting in the kennel for longer than necessary kept me driving. And the knowledge that we had no phone service at all! I didn't realise how dependent on telephones we are as a society. But I was travelling on my own with the kids and I knew DH would be hours behind me and if anything happened, I was on my own.

Every kilometre that went by, the happier I got.

See, I knew I could squeeze a little bit of Disney into an Australia Day long weekend away :cheer2:

Love the little bit of Disney. :rotfl:

Thanks for sharing the risotto. It was delicious!

Well, in that case it looks like I'll have to invest in some umbrellas!

Great way to finish off the weekend with Mickey leading the way home. I hope your dogs were ok.

The dogs were fine and so were the chickens and ducks. As soon as we got home and inside the dogs went and threw themselves on the cold tiles under the airconditioner!

It was good to get home though. There really is no place like it (unless I'm on a Disney ship and don't have to cook, make my bed...)

Sounds like a bit too hot long weekend. Wow a Bunnings and Target and everything in Airlie-shows how long its been since we were last there too. Good to see lots of food porn and the risotto looked delic even if it wasn't! Hope the incoming flood waters don't affect where you live. Stay safe.
