My DS10 is an Aspergers kid and has made HUGE strides since being diagnosed a couple years back. He has an IEP in school and it is important for me to have a lot of contact with his teacher and his school counselor so we can find the best strategies to help him. (As an aside - his teacher and counselor are AWESOME!!!) I went in for a short (half-hour) meeting with them both earlier this week - mostly to meet his teacher - and his teacher related this funny story to me.

His teacher gives out "points" to his students during the week for good behavior and other things and on fridays they can cash them in for different objects he has. This past friday DS had his eye on a pink breast cancer awareness wrist band and managed to get it. When he picked it out there were some snickers from his classmates. His teacher then stood up and showed the pink wrist band he was wearing and informed the class that he wore it because his sister had died from breast cancer 12 years ago. There was silence in the classroom and then DS said he had something to say. He STOOD UP IN FRONT OF HIS CLASSMATES (capitalized because it is so unlike him) and told them - "It takes a real man to wear pink!" :) I was dying when his teacher finished the story! Way to go Aaron!!!! I was so proud of him that he stood up for himself....a MAJOR step for him.

It was a good story during a tough time for our family.

Cute! Sounds like Aaron is a pretty smart kid. :goodvibes

It's great that he KNOWS that it takes a real man to wear pink. As you probably know, one of the things about Aspies is that they don't follow fashion, don't notice when they're dressed differently than others, don't notice when their pants are too short, etc.

For years I dressed DS very nicely for school...shorts or long pants, with a polo/shirt with a collar, tucked in. When we got his 4th grade class picture, I noticed that he was the ONLY boy wearing a shirt with a collar and the only boy with his shirt tucked in. (During that era, he like to tuck in...he'd even tuck in sweatshirts and sweaters!) That's when I knew that between his younger sister and I, we had to "dress" him. Sister is 21 months younger and notices everything, so she comes along shopping with us.

Sounds like your little Aspie is doing well.

My best friend works with Aspergers kids in Massachusetts! Great job Aaron, that's huge step!!

How funny your son said that!!! Good for him. I have a similar story about much son(7) (high functioning autism) We were on the plane from Disney in April and he was sitting across the isle from me. There was a man in the seat in front of him with a pink shirt on. As we were standing getting ready to get off the plane Ty looks at the man as says very loudly. "Hey, REAL men wear pink" The man didn't respond but everyone around us started laughing loudly. The man's wife got a kick out of it at least. It amazes me what bits of information they pick up and store for later use!!! Very cute!
