- Leading up to the Trip (This post)
- Day 1
-Day 2

Hi. I don't want to bore anyone with useless information, So I'll keep it simple. I'm Tyler, and I just came home from my first family vacation to WDW in December. (It's a little late, but I like to live in the past) BTW, for any parents, this is an EXCELLENT method to have your kids plan a Disney Vaca without them even knowing.

Here's the Family:

From Left to Right: Joshua (9) - Lori (Mom, 42) - Matthew (12) - Kenneth (Dad, 42) - Justin (14) - Tyler (Me, 16)

Hmm, where to start... Ok, seems like I may need a little bit more background info. My parents and I loved the idea of going to WDW. I was promised when I was 8 that we could go. But, my parents ended up having a new child and said that we wouldn't go until he was old enough to ride all the rides. Well, 8 years later, we started planning. "We didn't have the money for a major Disney vacation" was my moms favorite excuses, and she was right. With a family of 6, it was big bucks, especially with airfare. Well, the vacation my mom made us think we were going to is down to Atlanta to see our Aunt we haven't seen in forever. We would be driving 10 hours down, staying there for a week and a half, going to the beach, then coming home. We couldn't fly, no non-stop to Atlanta from where we were and it was EXPENSIVE to go there from BGM (Come on, Atlanta is the worlds busiest airport, no non-stop to ATL) I tried to convince my mom that we could just drive down to Orlando while we were down there, but she said that it would be another 7 hours, and she was right. So, she said (and has said for 2 years now) that we would fly down for my graduation party this year.

So, I've been sitting down with my mom, planning what our disney vacation be like. I got an Unofficial Guide to WDW, 2011 book (HIGHLY recommend it, the guides saved us HOURS of waiting) and started showing here what we could do. She hasn't been down there since she was 10, so she didn't really think that there was much to do. Well, I convinced her otherwise and we agreed that we would go down. Along side this, I was looking up thing that we would do while we were at our aunts house.

Fast forward to December 15. Its the night before we "leave to our aunts house". Our grandparents have set up a tradition that they give us our Christmas gifts on Christmas eve. Well, we would be at "Atlanta" until the 28, so they gave them to us before we left. It was stuff like car games, a usual pair of Pajamas, and stuff to keep us occupied in the car. Now, by this time, I was kinda bummed. Usually, I get things like some cash, or an expensive present (being the oldest has some perks) along side that. My uncle, who has the same tradition as my grandparents didn't even give anything to us yet.

Well, there was one more present. It was in a good sized box. Me and my 3 brothers all grabbed a side and tore it open. Up comes a mickey balloon with a mickey mouse ornament tied to it. (My mom gets 1 ornament for the tree based on what happened in the year, just a small explanation there) We weren't jumping up and down or anything, we knew that we were going in a few months. So, my parents look at us, asked us what it is, why they got it, and every other question about it in the world. We knew it's an ornament, we knew why she got it. We were going to WDW in a few months, that was the major event for next year. Or, so we thought. The surprise, we were going down the next day. Now, I'm 16, but my heart almost jumped out of my chest. I thought they were dead set against going this year. But, we went, and it was PERFECT.

Now, this is the first time anyone in our family has ever been to WDW (except our mom). The drive down was irritable. Getting stuck in a SUV with 5 other people for 10 hours isn't what you call a "vacation". Add to the fact that my dad got sick going down was was throwing up, not the best. But, by the time we got to Charlotte, everyone was fine. We stayed at a Homewood Suite (Free night from Hilton Honors) and packed up the next day and hit the road again. Now this time, everyone was anxious. We wondered everything about WDW. I've seen Disney Parks about 100 times on Netflix already, So I think I was the one who was the most anxious. Eventually (what seemed like a lifetime), we got to our hotel. We stayed at the homewood suite, run by hilton, on I-Drive. The first day, we just stayed at the hotel. We were all tired from the 19 hours in the car, so we took some swim time, ate dinner, and called it a night. The next morning though, Disney it is.

Pictures and Day 1 are in another post.

Hello! Great report so far! I'm close to your age... I'm 15. I love the way it was a surprise trip. It sounds wonderful! I don't think my parents would ever do that!

We went for the first time in August. I had to literally BEG my parents to take me and my brothers to WDW. We are from the UK so it's terribly expensive but way better than Europe! :cool1:

I see you're from PA... I've always wanted to go there! Can't wait for the next update! I've always wanted to go to MVMCP! You're so lucky getting to go again soon... it's another two years for us.

I have a few friends in the UK. I've always wanted to visit, just see the sights.

I personally would hate to go in august. The heat and humidity would kill me. but, there's often the free dining plan offer then. Now, I thought that Disney has a lot of offers for WDW for people who come from england, and special prices. Although, i guess the airfare would kill you. I know to fly from my airport to even Hearthrow, its like $1,500 round trip per person. But hey, I can't go again until 2013 either, so I guess we're stuck waiting =/

EDIT: http://wdtc.disneyinternational.com/Special-Offers.asp has a lot of offers for people traveling from the uk

I did take a few with my cell phone, although not a lot. I'll try to get them up if i can.

Thanks for the link! Looks like there's lots of deals on at the moment- but yeah, I think the UK do get offered better deals. I guess Disney senses that the price of it all puts us off! We actually got free dining and 45% off Saratoga Springs last year- that saved us about $4500. I SO wish that deal would come back on!

Flights are SO expensive, from the UK to US. But you should try to come to the UK, it is a fascinating country! London is a very unique city for sure. Flights will be cheaper probably during schooltime, so if your parents don't mind taking you out of school then it's a lot cheaper! :goodvibes

That's interesting that you wouldn't like to go in August. But then in PA, you have a hot summer, don't you? We only have literally 2 'hot' days a year- I guess being British makes you love the humidity and heat because of how rubbish the weather is in the UK. ;)

Can't wait to see some photos! :cool1:

We do have a mildly hot summer. We don't get days in the 100's F, but we do often get some in the 90's. But, where we are, its not usually a humid heat either. Down in Floria, it's more humid. I can deal with the heat, but the humidity drives me nuts. When we get days that are hot and humid up here, I literally don't want to do anything. :headache:

When we went down to flordia, it was perfect. The first day was a little cooler than what I would have likes, only being around 65, but after that, every day was near 80, and it was wonderful. Gives us a break from the cold up here (Right now, it's icing and ~30 F out) I can deal with anything up to 85, but after that, I'll pass.

Just a few tips to save some more money... Look at annual and seasonal pass owner deals. They get deep, like up to 50%. If there's one up for when you want to go, have 1 person in your room buy one and you can get the whole room discounted. Plus, you don't have to buy that person tickets.

Also, if you have any frequent flyer miles, then you can use those to pay for someone's airfare. Book that separately from the vacation. If you don't have any, then see how many you need per person for them to fly for free. If you can get that amount from paying for the rest of the family, then book theirs first, and then book that persons using the miles.

---------------------------------------------------------------
Also, I just got the pics from my cell phone, I'll post them now =D, Along with a more detailed release of day 1, and day 2 in WDW.

Day 1: 12/18/2011

We got up at 6:00 AM. Not too bad for us seeming we wake up at 6:30am every weekday. We stayed at the HomeWood Suites on I-Drive. Because my dad is a Hilton Honors (Homewood is run by Hilton), we got it at a discount using points that my dad earned from staying in Atlanta for schooling. The room was nicely sized, 2 Bedrooms, a Vanity Area, Bathroom, and Kitchen. It was the only room under $150 that fits 6, but it was nice. We got ready, and went to the lobby for the free breakfast. After breakfast, we headed straight for our first park: Magic Kingdom.

(Sorry, I don't have any pics until we get to Big Thunder Mountain)
We got there before the turnstiles were even open, and by our luck, we got there as a CM opened up another line, so we were first in line to enter the park. When the park opened, we Got out my Unofficial Guide book and followed the Magic Kingdom touring plan. We headed to Space Mountain, and rode it with no wait. My mom was dead set that you can see everything that in front of you, that it's not dark at all. Well, she was shocked. Since they re-did SM in 2009, it was totally different for her. My dad, who gets motion sickness extremely easy, wasn't feeling to his prime after that. My mom convinced him to ride it because she was still thinking of the old SM. Well, needless to say, we didn't ride that again. (Although I still wanted to :guilty:)

So, next on the list: Buzz lightyear. It was a good ride. (A lot like HersheyPark's Recess Peanut-Butter Cup Challenge in Hershey, PA) I was good at games like that, and it was a break for my dad to regain his cool. We had fun competing against each-other, and surprisingly, my dad beat me by 2,000 points. I still want a rematch.

Next on the list was Winnie the Pooh and Snow White's scary adventure. None of us, even Joshua, wanted to ride those. Sorry, not doing it... So, to stay on track, we have to spend about 20 minutes until we can do the next thing on our list. (The plan isn't based on time exactly, but you do need to keep intervals between skipped rides to keep it in check) So, we took the time to have a bathroom break and just walk around, looking at the sights.

After that, we went on Peter Pan's flight. It definitely shows it's age... We skipped It's a small world, for obvious reasons. We spent that extra time though in the cemetery of the haunted mansion. The ride was good, and I liked the special effects.

Finally, Splash and Big Thunder Mountain. There wasn't even a single person in line for Splash mountain. Again, my mom wasn't a fan. She claims its just a log flume with only 1 drop. But, I liked the story of it. We didn't get really we luckily, it was still before noon and I didn't feel like walking around in ~65 degree weather. So, we exit the ride and head for BTM. And BTW, right as we got off Splash Mountain, the wait jumped to 20 minutes.

We got on line for BTM, with minimal wait. The scenery was great. The ride was good. Everyone in the family liked it, although I wished it was a little more intense. I like intense rides.

Pirate of the Caribbean was another good ride. I do wish the animatronics were upgraded. The canon effects I thought were good though. So, we stopped and ate lunch here.

Next up, Jungle Cruise... Or so we thought. It was an hour wait! So, we got a FP. We watched the enchanted Tiki Room, and it was interesting. Up next, Swiss Family Treehouse.

(Everyone but mom)

Food from one of the tables.

We all thought it was really cool to see the treehouse (except Josh, who really didn't care too much). Especially since we just watched the movie the day before we left

After wondering around for a while now, not really following the touring plans, we decided to go to dinner now. We had tickets to MVMCP, so we could come back and finish what we missed. (And use our fastpass to jungle cruise)

Dinner at T-Rex in DTD: Very good Food, and filling too... But, WAY to overpriced... But then again, we were paying for the experience.

Well, after spending some time in T-Rex, looking at all they had set up everywhere, we went back to MK.

(I gtg for now, but I'll finish within the hour)

Great update! I love your photos! They're great quality for a cell phone! :goodvibes T-Rex looks good! I've always wondered what it's like there.

Can't wait for the next update! :goodvibes

I would love to live somewhere with weather like you get. :goodvibes Our summer days are around 60s and 70s. So whenever we get days in the 80s (we barely ever get days in the 90s full stop) the country goes crazy! :dance3:

Somewhere like Pennyslvania would be my ideal place to live in America. You get cold winters and warm/ hot summers. Sounds lovely!

I didn't dislike the humidity, it's better than the cold and drizzle we get, but like you say it can be annoying and hard to deal with. :confused3

65 is a bit too low for me too but near 80 sounds perfect! Wow... 30 is freezing right? (We use celcius, not farenheit so I get confused lol). It's getting a bit warmer here so I'm glad to get out of the freezing temperatures!

Really?! You get sometimes 50% off having an annual/ seasonal pass? That's something I'll definately have to look at! Is it guarranteed or something? We don't really want to pay a fortune for an annual pass and then find out there's no discount for our travel dates or whatever. :rotfl: Is that info on the Disney website?

We got some points from flying to Florida last year but I don't think they'd pay for a whole flight. Our supermarket does deals with Virgin Atlantic though and we're definately looking into buying some points that way!

Thanks so much for all the info! It's given me 'lots of food for thought' as they say! :)

Enjoying your TR! It was fun to hear about the surprise from the point of view of the person being surprised. And as a fellow Pennsylvanian, I appreciate the HersheyPark reference! Looking forward to reading more!

Yea, 32* F, 0* C is freezing and 212*F, 100*C is boiling. It gets annoying trying to convert sometimes, and We have to memorize and use both, plus have to convert between them. Not fun. :headache:

The first day was ~65, and after that it was WARM. I mean, i'm not complaining about 65... It's 60 out now and its a great break from the ~20's all winter. Hopefully, it will stay this way. Now is about when we get out of winter, but the tempratures also really vary here. 2 Days ago, it was 60. Yesterday it was 25 and snowing, and today was 60 again. For me, I'm happy with 75, i will be comfortable in ~68-80, and anything above ~88 is a little much for me.

It really depends... I have seen them go up to 50% off, but it's about as rare as a blue moon. I know though that every december, they usually have 40% off deluxe resorts for AP holders, So I am getting one for then, but it also saves me money cause I'm going again in Spring Break 2014 alone and again in December 2014 with the family.

I will be posting a new update. Day 2 comming

Day 2 - 12/19/2011

Hmm... Try to guess....
424983_3119546241968_1663910178_2490726_363573307_n.jpg

So, EPCOT it is... We actually spent the least time in this park than any other park. We voted against seeing the world showcase, we really didn't care for it at the time and we wanted to get back to the hotel. It was the hottest day of the week, so we went swimming at the hotel most of the day.

We arrived at the park turnstiles about 25 minutes before the park opened. They had a soft opening about 10 minutes early, although it took some time for all the attractions to open.

428211_3119539001787_1663910178_2490722_1051974710_n.jpg

The importance of arriving early... This is the Turnstiles at 25 Minutes before opening.

Watching everyone going to one side, and following our guide, we sent Dad to get a FP to soarin' and the rest of us headed to test track. I don't care if you are following a touring plan or not, always use this method. Everyone heads to soarin' first, and test track has almost no wait.

We went through Test track, and looked at all the interesting things on display in the bull pen. We got on, Six of us, 6 fit in a car. Perfect :cool1: We all loved test track. It was one of the family favorites in Disney World.

So, after Test Track, MS was next. My mom, Justin, Matt, and Me opted for orange; and my dad and Josh opted for green.

427769_3119576202717_1663910178_2490744_712256227_n.jpg

I have to say, Mission Space was AMAZING! My brother and mom weren't feeling the best afterwords, but I Loved it! I'm a Thrill junkie though, so no shocker there. My dad and Josh both liked green, it was perfect for them.

Now, here's where we stray from the plan. And we regretted it...
396411_3119582762881_1663910178_2490748_2116480196_n.jpg

We skipped a lot, and went to Under the Seas. (I got stuck with a red time tag  ) We weren't too interested in innovations. Well, we got stuck with a 54 minute wait. It was a cool attraction, but I wasn't paying too much attention to the story and just looking at all the fish.

429775_3119592243118_1663910178_2490760_730800104_n.jpg

404813_3119582002862_1663910178_2490747_1087157422_n.jpg

Getting back onto the plan (Which actually managed to work itself out) We went to Capetian EO. All of us weren't really paying attention and falling asleep. We were hoping that it would be "Honey I shrunk the Audience", but it wasn't. We really don't care for Cap EO.

We went to the Land Pavilion and saw The Circle of Life. It was interesting to say the least. My Mom, Justin, and I liked it. But, Josh and Matt didn't care. We then headed to Soarin.

Now, we've heard great stories of Soarin. Its our friend's favorite ride, and now one our top picks. It was GREAT! I Loved the feeling. I thought that it would be not as good because you were in large rows of seats, but you still feel like your flying.

64831_3119554242168_1663910178_2490733_1057196409_n.jpg

Spaceship earth was next. And also was the last attraction we went to. We were waiting in line and it was HOT. Llike, around 85 F. I bought myself an ice cream, and my brothers were jealous. (I'm the only one with a debit card :woohoo: ) Well, the ride was cool. I liked it, although it seemed like a episode of jetsons on the theme of "This is how earth will be in X amount of years". Non-the-less, it was good.

404881_3119553202142_1663910178_2490730_150389082_n.jpg

Well, we headed back to the hotel and went in the pool, had some sleep, and ate dinner. All in all, a good day.
