A few questions about POR

We're leaving for POR on Aug. 29th. From reading the board here and another Disney board- I gather that a party of 5 people would be staying at the AB section. Now- when we booked the reservation- no where did it mention that the trundle bed was for a child under 9. (especially when we booked the room as 3 adults, 2 kids and POR was the only option we were given for the moderate resorts (1-13 yrs old and the other 10 yrs old). I called the resort to inquire about how the room for 5 works and was told that if the AB section was filled (which is highly likely as the resort is almost 100% booked for the time we're there)- we'd be put in the mansions section with a roll away bed. I'm fine with that but am concerned about the lack of elevators at the resort. Is it only the AB section that doesn't have elevators? We have a member of our travel party who uses a scooter to get around. No idea what will happen if we don't have a ground floor room if there's no elevators.

My other question pertains to the carriage rides and surrey bike rentals. Does anyone know if the cost of the carriage ride/bike rentals is per person or does it cover everyone in the party? Probably a stupid question but I really don't know. I'm assuming it's per person.

Any help or advice anyone can provide would be greatly appreciated. Just want to make sure our trip goes as smoothly as possible.

Hi... I am arriving the same day as you. It's getting exciting. I haven't been to WDW in over 10 years and this is my first time staying at POR.:cool1:

I also want to find out when the piano player is playing at the River Roost. (if you dont mind me adding onto your thread.)

Please let WDW know you need a handicap accessible room so you wont' have to worry about getting the scooter up the stairs!!! The surrey bike ride is per bike, don't know about the carriage ride. The piano player is still there from something I read on the Boards recently.

I did let WDW know this. They told me that it's just a request and not guaranteed. That's why I was wondering if there were elevators in Magnolia Bend as we were told that's where we may end up. Gee- after seeing pics of the trundle bed- honestly I hope we do end up with a rollaway bed. Trundle looks REALLY small. My son is 10 but he may not fit!

You're fine adding to my thread! The more the merrier! I didn't even know there was a piano player at the River Roost...we've never stayed at POR either. Always at the Value resorts

Yes there are elevators in the mansion buildings.

The piano player is Yehaa Bob Jackson, and he is there on Wed-Sat.
His website is www dot yehaabob dot com
As far as the trundlebeds go, my 18 yr old son and 17 yr old nephew switched off on it. They're both 6' plus and didn't have a problem.
I have also spent a night in the trundle, and at 6' tall and 210, I didn't have an issue either. (although getting back out of it was an issue for this old timer)
The carriage rides I believe are $35 per half hour.
I don't know about the surrey bikes.

How were the buses? I seen people complaining about getting to/on the buses at POR. So far thats my only concern. I'll call is a couple weeks about room request:)

As far as last year goes (same time frame)
For Typhoon Lagoon, they cut down the number of trips because it is a slow season.
For all the other parks, we really didn't have an issue, although we did wait about 15 min once in awhile.
The ride back to the resorts after the fireworks, and park closings can be very crowded, but this is true of most resorts.

We did have standing room only a few times, but the ride wasn't that long, and is was usually just me, my 18 yo son, 17 yo nephew and brother in law that stood.

The surrey bike rentals aren't per person. They are per bike. I think it was around $16/per half hour. We had 6 people, 2 adults and our 4 young children on the bike. So my wife and I did all of the pedalling. It is actually very easy to pedal around!! But there are a couple of uphill portions that you have to work for a minute. At least we did with the 6 bodies on our bike!! We made two laps around the resort in a half an hour. It was very fun!!

When you say you have a member of your party that uses a scooter do you mean in that same room? because you cannot fit the scooter and a trundle bed or scooter and a roll away in one room. and they will need to bring the scooter in to charge unless you can bring batteries only section to charge.
The mansions DO have elevators, but I would still request a first floor and mention the scooter is for medical reasons.

Last time we did the carriage ride, soon after they started them, it was $100 for the two of us but that would have covered up to four people. Not sure what it is now though.

According to the staff at POR there will be no problem having a scooter in the room with a trundle bed or a roll away. I hope this isn't going to be an issue because I've called and talked to at least 10 people now and they all say the same thing.

we had a scooter in room with a trundle without issue years back.
HAVE A WONDERFUL TIME! Will be there too!

Just wanted to mention that a handicapped room is usually lower level and corner, with TWO windows maybe a bit roomier accomodations in bathrrom from what I recall and if requested with original reservation can be a WONDERFUL situation if needed. Disney really does try and accomodate all requests.

Yes there are elevators in the mansion buildings.
::yes::
Only the Mansions have elevators.
The AB buildings are only 2 floors and are not required to have elevators.

AB rooms are the ones with the trundle beds as far as I know (no trundle beds at the Mansions).
Fully wheelchair accessible rooms are blocked off and reserved for the guest at the time of booking. They are not a request, they are a guarantee (since many people who are booking them need the things like roll in showers and would not be able to stay without that level of accessibility).
First floor is a request, but if you requested it for medical reasons, those requests are filled before the general requests for the same things.
If "Medical Reasons" or something similar is not on your confirmation slip, you should check that it is in the computer.

If you only need first floor, you may not want to request a handicapped room.
There are 2 types of handicapped rooms. One type is the same as a non-handicapped room. The differences are that the room has a raised seat toilet and grab bars for the toilet and tub.
The other kind of handicapped room is fully wheelchair accessible; those rooms have raised seat toilets, sinks that a wheelchair user can roll right up under and a roll in shower. To make room for these features, the room is rearranged (it's not any bigger than a non-handicapped room). The bathroom area is bigger, but the space to make it bigger is taken from the bedroom area. This makes the bedroom area smaller, so many of the fully accessible rooms have only a single king size bed.

Thanks for the info. I guess I'll just have to call and see if the cost is per person or per carriage.

We did the carriage ride in Nov. 2005 at POR. There were two of us and the price was for the carriage ride, not per person! (We also tipped the driver.) :)
