Hi

I will be visiting HHI in April and would really appreciate the answers to a few questions to help with the planning / excitement for the trip.:banana:

1) Are the 2 bedroom units dedicated 2 bedrooms or lockoffs?

2) What's the shopping like at the resort is there a shop with a good range of disney merchandise?

3) What's the best place to buy groceries

4) Is there an outlet mall anywhere near by - we will have a hire car so are ok to travel

5) What do the kids generally do on the 'big night out' can I book that at checkin and does it usually get very full and how much does it cost. My daughter is 7 is she about the right age ????

Many thanks in advance

My wife and I have been to HHI twice in the last three years. It is great! Don't worry about groceries there are several large chain groceries just a few miles down the road. The disney merchandise is exactly like you would find at any of their other resorts. Plenty of goods to spend your money on.

I have been thinking about going there myself with the family. Since we have to fly in what is the closest major airport that we could rent a car to get there?
Does anybody know if there is any golfing around?

I can help with a couple of answers.

1) I think the 2BR's are all dedicated for the most part. We usually stay in studios and I guess they could connect with an adjacent 1BR but since they are all usually booked up, I doubt this happens very often.

2) The resort gift shop is kind of small and does have Disney stuff but IMO the selection is rather poor.

3) As far as groceries go, we like the Piggly Wiggly which is just down the road next to the shopping mall.

4) There is an outlet mall right on your right before you cross over to the island itself.

Hope this help.

The closest airport is Savannah, but you might get better flights into Charleston or Atlanta. There are many, many golf courses on the island with Palmetto Dunes right across the main road.

Would you mind one more question? I would like to know what activities there are for 13 year olds.

LOTS of golfing opportunities. DH has finally played every course on or near the island. And at about 2- 3 rounds/trip, it took him many trips trips to get to every course he could play (not counting private courses).
About the 2 BR lock-off/dedicated. I think the only 2 BR lock-offs are the ones in the main lodge. The main lodge has the studios and 1 BRs, but they're all lock-offs in case the need arises for more 2 BRs. Also, the main lodge is the only place where you can get a HA unit, so if anyone requests a 2 BR HA unit, it will be a lock-off in the main lodge.

From activity schedule Aug 2010, most (if not all) of these activities should be available when you visit in April. Different activities are scheduled each day, so everything that is listed below will not take place every day. And you can also call resort couple days prior to your trip to have them fax you activity schedule for when you are there :

For All Ages (including adults) - $ means fee required : Campfire, pool games at Big Dipper pool & beach house, poolside karaoke, Goofy bingo, scavenger hunt, resort nature walk, low country plant walk, secrets of the marsh, bird watching, ghosts & legends of the low country, dolphin tour $, kayaking $, Hilton Head Island tour $, golf lesson $ (13 yrs + up), make a shark's teeth necklace $, make Disney character mugs $, make a HHI photo frame $, make a Mickey tie dye tshirt $, cooking with Chef Lee or Chef Robert Irvine $ (10 yrs + up)

Teen specific For Ages 13 - 17 : Teen's Night Out $ (pizza & mini-golf or movie supervised by CMs off-resort property), teen kayaking $, teen field trip to Chaplin Park (field day activities with CMs), teen billiards.

Enjoy your trip :goodvibes

There are 2 outlet malls. Both are on the right before you cross over onto the island. One of them is currently closed - they are completely rebuilding it, and the Grand Opening is March 31-April 3.

We've flown into Jacksonville which is a nice airport and lots of car rental options. The drive to HHI is around 2:30. Not as close as Savannah but airfare is definitely cheaper (at least to and from Buffalo)

We've flown in to both Charleston and to Jacksonville, and our next trip is into Charleston since Southwest just began service there. Charleston is about an hour closer, I think it's about 110 miles vs. I think Jacksonville is about 150 miles. Last time that we flew into Jacksonville, there was a major part of the highway, about 25 miles worth, that was all under construction. And since it was very late at night, it wasn't a pleasant trip. Charleston seemed much better. Both airports (and also Savannah) are easy to get around and out of, at least.
