A few board observations...

:confused3 Is it just me or does this seem to contradict itself??? :confused3

And I disagree....life is far to short to get your knickers-in-a-knot over different people posting the same opinion on pages 2, 28, 42 & 106 of a thread! Big deal!

Actually, to me, those are two totally different issues. Asking a similar question can get more current information than something that was asked two weeks ago.

Someone barreling in to a thread that's 10 pages long and saying, "Well, I didn't read the whole thing but obviously...blah, blah, blah." If they didn't read the whole thing, they've probably missed all sorts of clarifications and discussions of whatever it is they're upset about. It's like barging in to an ongoing conversation with a totally irrelevant point.

What I meant was when I clarify - for example - "no, we did check on that and we were told, blah blah blah," and then someone 10 posts later says, "well it doesn't seem like you even checked!"

My knickers do get in a knot if I say I did something and people on pages 2, 28, 42, and 106 ask me "Why didn't you do that?"

I mean, I want fresh opinions, and maybe from people who didn't join in the first time.

Here's my pet peeve - people who argue without reading the whole thread. I know they can get long, but you just look stupid if you chime complaining about something that has been clarified 10 times.

Like if someone who is talking about using a child's ticket for kid who is too old and then comes back to clarify on page 2 that they had never indended to use the ticket - that maybe they hadn't worded the OP well or something. When the people who come barrelling in on pages 3, 4, 5, 6 etc to say, "Well I didn't read the whole thread but I think it's wrong to cheat WDW and it teaches your kid a bad lesson and blah blah blah" - that's really annoying.

But...if it's someone's opinion, rightly or wrongly, why would that bother you? Do you think that it is appriopriate to expect that every poster on the board read everyone's post since the conception of the thread? :sad2: Honesty AuntPolly, I'm not trying to engage you in any heated arguement here but I do worry that posts like this cause potential posters to shy away from the boards rather than incur the ire of previous posters. Sometimes, I read a short synopisis of a thread, add in my two cents & call it a day....it's just my opinion, & certainly not intended to annoy anyone.

Ummm . . . yeah! Why would you respond to a thread when you haven't read it in its entirety? Sure you have the right to but it wastes everyone's time when they have to wade through 20 posts that are virtually identical all because the poster didn't bother to read the thread or when the OP is attacked for something that they wouldn't have been if the attacker had taken the time to read the whole conversation. I really don't think that's an unreasonable expectation. It's just common courtesy.

Well, that's cool! We dont' need to agree on this point...that's the beauty of the Dis forums! We are both able to state our opinions & neither need to agree with the other.

I will say though Tiki, I absolutely loath any one attacking another OP, regardless of whether or not they've read the entire conversation! I think allowing each other the right to their opinion on an open forum is a reasonable expectation...THAT my friend is common courtesy! :flower3:

That's why I am in favor of updating the first post....or as some do...just update the title and say Update....page whatever!

I will then jump to the page after the OP and get the update and if I have anything to add..then I do.

If a thread has 106 pages and is still going strong..I read the first and then the last...just to see if it is still on topic.

Lots of grief would be spared if an OP would just update--then coming back on all 106 pages with addendums, unannounced updates, defenses, et cetera....

When you join friends in conversation that has been going on for an hour--do you just keep your mouth shut since you don't have the transcripts?

It isn't necessary to read a whole thread.

I didn't just now....:rolleyes1

My pet peeve is when OP NEEDS to clarify something 10 times..but then won't correct or modify the first post.

But...if it's someone's opinion, rightly or wrongly, why would that bother you?.

The way you cut and paste - you have 2 different things going on there.

When I was talking about "fresh ideas" I was talking about why I might ask a question that had been asked before - I was responding to the OP.

But they I went on to say what my pet peeve is - I guess you'll have to give you an example.

If I said, "My Dh gets mad because I always make the same thing for lunch that he had for dinner"

Then some says - "WHy don't you just ask him what he had and then decide what to make".

Then I post - "I ask him every day tell me, but I never get to talk to him after lunch.

Then 10 people post - Why don't you just ask him what he had for lunch?"

THis is a silly example, but I'm trying to illustrate it simply. Sometimes people criticize you for something that, had they just read the thread, they'd understand that the criticism was unfounded.

OMG I really never thought to do that - like I should just edit the OP to say - "And I can't ask him after he eats lunch because I can never get him on the pbone and he doesn't call me."

I always just try to answer the questions people ask as they ask - I feel really silly I never thought to do that!

Exactly! I just hate getting attacked for something I already explained 10 times! But I never thought to just change the OP! Maybe that would help!

If you had read the whole thread, you would have realized that Pta-mom already responded with your opinion. Case in point. To answer your question, if my friends were having a conversation and I joined in an hour later, I would expect them to recap the conversation for me before saying anything. It would be more efficient and convienent if there were transcripts. That's what's so great about being able to read every read of it on the DIS.

The problem with updating the OP is that it could get really lengthy and confusing for new readers if the OP just answered everyone's questions in the OP.

I hope you aren't upset with that.

The bad ones I have seen are with more controversial subjects where pertinent information was omitted...then the OP has to clarify a million times--it is suggested by several that they update the OP and then they don't..then get upset b/c people are still not agreeing with them or providing a solution that they like b/c it doesn't mesh with their situation.

I've updated when I had a pertinent omission--just so I don't have to answer over and over again.

Really....b/c I don't see where she mentioned the part about a real life conversation?

As far as updating OP--I was speaking about the omission (either on purpose or by accident) of something quite pertinent to the conversation.

I guess I just don't expect to read X # of pages of a thread I posted..If I had to clarify the same thing over and over again...something isn't right in my OP and I try to go fix it.

In the case of omitting pertinent information, perhaps an update is in order. However, there are still many things that transpire in the course of the conversation that one can't grasp by simply reading the first and last page of a thread. Thus such a poster ends up wasting everyone's time and making the thread unnecessarily longer by repeating information or misunderstanding the flow of the conversation.

I like to think of this board as chatting around the table at lunch....if you want to know something, you ask...no telling what the topic may be....this board is evergreen...it's not an encyclopedia....

If you're interested in trip planning, stay on the planning board....all the routine questions will come up again and again...so it's not hard to find an answer.

just my 2/100 worth.
