A faux pas?

WOW a little angry in the morning.

There was zero anger. Perhaps the flat affect of my plain words came across wrong. Sorry about that.

It’s very common for one spouse to not want to do the Dvc planning...

I could believe this IF we aren't all in the same financial house and the group wasn't discussing vacations. All of us have been to WDW many times and other countries a few times. Guy 1 was just back from Greece. Guy 2 was in California for 2 weeks in March and then Canada. Guy 3 and I are both going to the same two places this year. It was the DVC part - he happily went on to talk about tickets/passes and parks

Ahhhhh... you knew this. Alas, we did not. We threw out possible reasons in response to your post. If that info had been in the first post our answers likely wouldn’t have included concerns about financial differences or discomfort about money. :)

In cases like this I prefer to assume the person suddenly remembered something or was having bodily distress and reacting to it, rather than assume it’s something I said wrong. Because I can go to “something I said wrong” very easily, and I prefer not to torture myself whenever possible.

Excellent advice

Like other PP I don't like saying i own a timeshare, because i have looked at others who have bought into other time shares as if they have been scammed. Hense those timeshares being given away to get away from paying the yearly fees. But knowing DVC inside and out I don't feel that way about my own purchase. I see the tremendous value in it. People get weird when you talk about financial things, which a timeshare purchase certainly is. Finances are private and not to be discussed.

As a Floridian I've often been asked, "Why would you buy a Disney timeshare when you only live 2 1/2 hours away?" Most people don't understand that DVC is a more flexible way of timesharing. And though I'm quite realistic, I don't "drink the kool-aid" as they say, I really love the various resorts, their amenities and Disney. When I say I'm going to Disney, I'm sure the nay sayers envision this 56 year old woman riding It's a Small World over and over. Trust me, anyone who works with me and knows me, does not see me as affluent, more like as someone who squanders her money at Disney.

My wife and I would likely own DVC without our girls, but nobody bats an eye when we say we own DVC with young children (5 & 2). We simply say that is where our girls want to spend their vacation and suddenly we are 'very patient parents' to suffer through it. Haha! We go to WDW for us and are just happy to be able to take our kids to share the experiences with them. We are also very fortunate that our best friends here at home own DVC and vacation as we do. I do get the glance from coworkers about 'going to WDW again', but it doesn't phase me. When they pay for my vacations they can have a say in where that might be. :)

I don't know that I would consider owning a timeshare as a mark of wealth. I know many people who have the means and time to afford DVC / Disney trips, they just don't want to. Sounds crazy to folks like us, but there are a ton of people out there that aren't remotely interested in Disney vacations.

If we were talking about # of points, or P/Pt or financing. This group talks about houses, cars, travel. I don't think saying one owns a timeshare is akin to running a credit report. Heck, where we work, our salaries are known to all. But, I will say that I don't know why he reacted as he did. I will try to find out when I see him next. And I will continue to use my DVC purse and tote bags. I certainly don't bat an eye when someone wears a shirt with the Eiffel Tower or Maui on it. The fact that we are at work together implies that we all must work...believe me - we talk endlessly about not having to be there (but that is a very different story that delves into a truly poor subject to discuss at work or here. The big P - only thing worse is the big R. ;-)

Maybe tired of being asked to use the timeshare. Once people know you have DVC they all want a free stay...

This. I cant believe how many people will ask for a free trip

Not too many for me - I usually invite people to come. I had someone hint about it over the last few days - and, no, not doing it.

We are currently in the process of getting DVC. My sister has it also. She us and brother 50 points and we had to "rent" the rest. Other family members she told if they had the extra points they would need to pay that share of her maintanence fees.
