I understand that having people waiting in line clears the park and allows capacity for other things but people in line are not spending money.
They also aren't having a great time and Disneys business is giving people such a great day that they want to spend....
Why don't they make it FP (or a similar system) only so everyone meeting can do so with a short wait?

I don't think you can make it a Fastpass attraction. The attraction has a capacity of under 200 people an hour. I don't think Disney wants to make it a FP only attraction. When you make that low capacity of an attraction with Fastpass, your likely to lead to disappointment. Most people don't plan for any Disney Parks trip. They would still want to stand in a line to try to see them. It would make things worst. The only reason it's a FP+ attraction is that they can add multiple rooms for them at their M & G space.

I doubt all those people are standing in line because they didn't want to get a FP. If it were to be made a FP only attraction, how would Disney accommodate all those people?

I'm sorry, A&E? I don't think you mean the tv channel.:rotfl2:

A- There's no space.
B- Not everyone overplans their vacations so they wouldn't know that they need a fastpass to see them.
C- Because if you want to see them badly enough, you'll wait. If you don't you can go watch the pre-parade.

A-What does Space have to do with anything? It's still one line-just FP only
B-No need to plan-you are just walking up and being given a return time, it's not FP+

A- OK, so now you have a FP only line. What about the people who don't show up within their time window? Are they out of luck? Or do Anna and Elsa now have nothing to do for a few minutes whereas they could be spending time meeting another family who weren't lucky enough to get a FP? Does the family now lose out completely or do they get to come back later, and make it a shorter time window for some other poor family? Furthermore, where would the families wait for their return window to come up? Most people loiter around the attraction their FP is supposed to come up for if they show up early, and if they're not in a queue space they will more than likely clog up the immediate area and walkways which could become a fire hazard and all around nuisance.

B- Again, not all families preplan their vacations or do their research before they head to the park. Not the wisest of all decisions, but it happens. So now FP is already given out for the day, and the poor family from Guatemala (who paid the same to come to the park mind you) is just out of luck because they didn't RUN to the location first thing in the morning? Also, wouldn't this once again turn the location (which seems to have calmed down a bit as of late) into the running of the bulls at rope drop? Or what about the folks who arrive after having lunch and decide on a whim that their kids' wish to see the royal duo is worth waiting for? No luck, bub, should have shown up at opening just to come back 9 hours later.

There's a reason there are no FP only attractions, and there's no way that it would be a plausible operation for a character meet and greet either.

But, they're testing this exact scenario for A&E at WDW right now. You get a FP-like piece of paper with a return time on it, and there's no standby line during the test. If they've run out when you get there, then you don't see A&E that day. The OP posted a link to Kenny the Pirate's website that explains all about it.

But there are still 2 lines at WDW's M&G ~ one for FP+ and one for those who have secured a paper return ticket the day of (this was the previous stand by line). Also, reports are that yesterday and today they only gave out paper return tickets for times until 8:00pm and then opened the line back up to stand by line at 8:30 until park close.

Another thing to keep in mind, this was only a 3 day test so it will be interesting to see what happens tomorrow.

I really think that space IS an issue because there needs to be space for two lines to make sure there is flexibility. Without FP for this M&G at DL, if you only had a line for people with paper return tickets then you would have a possibility (albeit a VERY slim one) that you could end up with a line with no one in it. If I happened to be a guest that had arrived and been unable to secure a paper return ticket I would be unhappy but would be willing to wait with my girls if that's what they wanted. If I was then told I couldn't even wait, I would be be a very unhappy guest.

Eh...it isn't a big deal, and you don't need 2 lines...until FP+ makes its way to DL.

This is really similar to how Jedi Training Academy has been run at HS for years. People understand that if you want to participate, you need to be there before rope drop and sign up. I think this new approach sounds great. The lines were completely ridiculous...and it sounds like obtaining a FP+ is also equally as challenging. This is more of a 'sure thing' if you arrive at rope drop, and saves families hours of waiting.

I agree I think it is a better alternative to a 4 hour wait. It will be interesting to see how the test goes.

A-this is really no different than any other FP attraction, they are giving out x per hour. If people don't show up in their window than yes they miss out or obtain another.

B-we don't know how long they (the passes) will last for (in the day) but every ride/attraction has a maximum amount of guests it can put through a day. Meet and greets have always had to cut people off because the character could only see x amount of people per set-first in first serve.
