A Disneyland Paris DVC is not a Disneyland Paris Booking?

It wouldn't be the first time I've heard different answers to questions, or been told the book policy while the actual practice differs so I wanted to ask here where people may have actual guest side experience.

I bought into the BLT in 2014 and used it for the first time at VGC in September of this year. When booking I obviously knew the difficulties in getting in and was aware of the option to use points at the non DVC hotels. Through all my research it seemed that everyone felt that once you converted over to the regular hotels from DVC your reservation was no different than any other person's hotel reservation. Even the WDW DVC bookings behave like any other hotel booking.

Next year I'm planning to stay visit Disneyland Paris and expected a similar kind of process of booking through DVC and then having a regular hotel booking afterwards, but through conversations with DVC it sounds like in Paris they are far from equal. I've done all the math and figured out that for the 5 nights I'm staying it is 155 points plus the $95 fee. That seems to break out roughly even (varies slightly in either direction based on deals), so the price is obviously not as good as a DVC which could get twice the length for those points, but the cost is close enough for me. It sounds like the abilities are sharply limited though. They said that DVC bookings don't have the ability to use meal plans, which is not a big deal for us, but odd. From what I've been told though it also sounds like you can't have any real interactions with your reservation or make any associated plans until you arrive and talk to the front desk. This is a problem for us since we plan to do one of the resort's excursions to Paris for a day, but typically Disney determine the language based on the first booking and they can often fill up so waiting until the day of seems like it could be a problem. Even the luggage services I've been told are not available to DVC members until they talk to the front desk upon arrival, an option obviously not available to get to the resort. From the sounds of it a DVC booking seems to be treated like someone showing up for a day trip rather than someone staying on property. Do they really treat them so differently, or is this another case of member services not fully knowing how things work? Has anyone stayed at Disneyland Paris using DVC points that can shed some light on just what the differences are between booking with DVC points vs paying cash directly to the resort?

Which luggage service are you referring to?
There is no Magical Express equivalent at DLP. There are official shuttles picking at the airports, however they're a paid service and can be purchased by anyone even on the day (you pay the driver if you don't have a voucher purchased with a package). Depending on how many there are in your group, it can be cheaper and more convenient to book a private taxy service.

Also, the meal plan in DLP is awful: you pay in advance for the half or full board and get vouchers that are worth exactly how much you paid them. You can only loose money on these. Unless it's included in the price as an offer when booking cash, then I wouldn't buy it.

If you compare the prices you see on the DLP website, remember that all packages sold by DLP include park tickets (while DVC points don't, however they include free continental breakfast), which are expensive if purchased at the gate. If you want to stay more than three days, then an annual pass is cheaper.

Long story short: if you don't mind to rent your DVC points out, I'd do that and book cash.
Be aware that DLP runs offers all year long (with the latest events in Paris, I guess they'll be even more aggressive with it). If there isn't anything available now it may be because it's just too early. Keep an eye on all the european websites (disneylandparis.fr .co.uk .nl .it ...) because each country website can have a different offer. Some offer 20% with kids go free under 12yo, others can have 1 night free for 2 purchased, or 20% + free dining. Getting closer to the date, you can get a flash sale for 50% discount. Anyone can buy using any offer found in any country website, you don't have to be a resident of that country, so you can call the call center and ask them to book using an offer you've seen on any website.

One last thing: DLP is going through a major (much needed) renovation project, in preparation for the 25th anniversary. Until 2017 expect at least two major attractions to be closed at any time. Currently the Big Thunder Mountains are closed, they are the crown jewel of the park, it's a pity not being able to experience them. If this is a once in a lifetime trip, if you can I'd wait until 2017.

The luggage service is the Disney Express Luggage Service: http://www.disneylandparis.co.uk/guest-services/disneyland-express-luggage-service/

It does allow you to check in for your hotel at the train station and they will transport your luggage directly to the hotel while you go and play in the parks without stopping at the hotel to get rid of the luggage and get your tickets (which usually are part of the packages people book at DLP hotels).

OP, when we booked our package at DLP online, we had to call the DLP reservation center to add on the Disney Express. I am not sure if you could do that when booking through DVC. I would think you would still get a reservation number and with that, the DLP call center should be able to access your reservation to add it on. As far as I understand, booking other Disney hotels through DVC actually is a reservation at that hotel, not a DVC reservation. Just the payment is different. i.e. in points instead of Dollars or Euros.

But I do agree with the previous poster that shopping around for deals and renting your points most likely would get you a better price.

Thanks for the help. I think I may give DLP a direct call and see if they know anything different from DVC. I would be surprised if it was any different than the conversion of points to dollars resulting in a hotel booking. I've seen that on the UK website even the Eurostar can be booked directly through DLP. From checking it doesn't seem to be any cheaper than a direct Eurostar booking plus the Disney Express service.

BTW, did you buy your points directly from Disney, not resale?
Yeah, after seeing the change they made a few years ago to distinguish the two kinds of purchases, I didn't trust them not to make any further changes in the future so I bought direct.
