A DISers Book Club!

Well with the school year starting up, i am no longer able to read for pleasure :headache:

I am currently reading The Republic of Plato, Beowulf, and Writing a Research Paper in Political Science

They are all not as bad as they seem. I am actually quite enjoying Plato! My reading list is going to be quite long once winter break come :thumbsup2

Tomorrow is the release for the new Dan Brown book The Lost Symbol.
I preordered it for my Kindle so it will be delivered in the early morning hours. I will be up since I have a graveyard shift..trying to finish up what I am reading now to be able to start it as soon as I can. I have only read DaVinci Code so am hoping this one is good as well.
I also finished reading The Devil in the White City. Not exactly what I was expecting but a good read nonetheless. I will be putting Thunderstruck by the same author on my 'to buy' list.
I love that fall is almost here..it's my favorite reading season with the crisp coolness in the air, snuggled on the couch with a good book...:cloud9:

Amazing... I woke up this morning and Voila - the new Dan Brown book was waiting for me on my Kindle :goodvibes So cool...........

Now all I need to find is some time to sit & read it :coffee:

In lieu of that, I started reading Jurassic Park. It is very good so far, especially since I am into paleontology. I find the format a little odd, but it is still very good. It gets a lot more into the deep science of it all than the movie did, and I like that a lot.
That was a trait of Chrichton - he seemed to throw himself into each novel and really dig deep into the science behind the subject, if you liked that try any of his other ones, Airframe, Timeline (my fave) He was a great writer.

Thanks! I will definitely check those out. I also want to try The Andromeda Strain. I saw the movie for Timeline, and it was BAD, so I was averted to reading that book. I'm sure the book is good, but still.

I agree that Timeline as a movie was horrid but as a novel it was delicious!

I just picked up The Lost Symbol/Dan Brown from Costco this morning..... I can't wait until tonight to start reading it!
:yay:

Another Kindle owner who awoke to find The Lost Symbol already downloaded.

Gotta love that.

Also a Michael Chrichton fan. I have read everything.....but read Timeline 3 times. It's far and away my favorite. Embarassingly.....I even liked the movie version.

If this type of thing appeals to you.....I suggest The Eight by Katherine Neville.

It's not available for the Kindle ...yet, but is available as a paperback.

Awesome book.

Just a quick FYI regarding "The Eight" - the sequel came out the end of last year I believe. It's called "The Fire". I got it several months ago but haven't gotten around to reading it yet. I'm not sure sure if it is available for the Kindle yet either...

While I have not read it.....I've heard that the sequek is dreadful.

I hope you find out differently.

Let us know....

Im new here. So glad to find this thread. I absolutely love reading and seeing what others are reading.

I just finished Certain Girls by Jennifer Weiner, Something Borrowed by Emily Giffin, and now reading Home Repair by Liz Rosenberg.

The first two were definately light reads and fluff. Home Repair is a little deeper but as of right now still pretty light.

Enjoying this thread. Thank you all!!!!

Alison

So, how many of you got The Symbol today? I am getting behind on my reading because I am back to work, but I definitely plan on reading it soon! :)

I am currently reading 'Mother of Pearl' by Melinda Haynes.

I plan to read next 'My Sisters Keeper by Jodi Picoult' and 'The Last Song by Nicholas Sparks'. I met him last week at a books signing!!:goodvibes

I have so many books lined up to read, it's crazy. BUT..."The Lost Symbol" is now at the top of the list. What I need to do is stop loading books onto the Kindle... yeah right - like that's going to happen :rotfl2:

Hi Timika - Welcome to the group :flower3:

Pete's blogs keep reminding me of "In A Sunburned Country" by Bill Bryson.

It's a hilarous travel book about his adventures down under. He's an awful lot like Pete and spends a large part of the book talking about how everything in Australia is trying to kill you.

"Despite the fact that Australia harbors more things that can kill you in extremely nasty ways than anywhere else, including sharks, crocodiles, snakes, even riptides and deserts, Bill Bryson adores the place, and he takes his readers on a rollicking ride far beyond that beaten tourist path. Wherever he goes he finds Australians who are cheerful, extroverted, and unfailingly obliging, and these beaming products of land with clean, safe cities, cold beer, and constant sunshine fill the pages of this wonderful book. Australia is an immense and fortunate land, and it has found in Bill Bryson its perfect guide."

All of Bryson's books are great but I'm partial to this one and "A Walk in the Woods" about his adventures on the Appalachian Trail.

I finished The Lost Symbol this morning. I really enjoyed it!
I know I will be reading it again. I read somewhere to call the phone number mentioned in the book..so go ahead and do it when you get there.
There is also a website mentioned that I am going to check out too.
I have never read Angels and Demons so that is up next.
Happy reading! :goodvibes

hey everyone! thanks to you all, i picked up The Pillars of the Earth...and LOVED. IT. i finished it in about a week, reading mostly at nights, in between working, sleeping, and The Sims 3-ing, hahah. AMAZING characters, and i just loved how everyone's stories intertwined. Good stuff!

Next will probably be Sense & Sensibility. The only Austen i've read so far is Pride & Prejudice, so i'm hoping i'll like the rest of her work, as well.

:teeth: thank you for reminding me i don't miss college THAT much, haha. i just graduated with a degree in PoliSci. Have you taken a Western Political Thought class? :scared: i'm glad i suffered through that class now, but SUFFER i did, hahah.

All of Bryson's books are great but I'm partial to this one and "A Walk in the Woods" about his adventures on the Appalachian Trail.

like any good New Englander, i read this book...but i think i was too young to really "get" it (the fact that i barely remember it is a pretty good indication of that). i might have to dig that one out again.

I finished "Salem Falls" by Jodi Picoult...very good but not as good as some of her later books. Still worth reading if you like her books, though.

I finished "Love Walked In" by Marisa de los Santos and "Whistling In The Dark" by Lesley Kagen - both were EXCELLENT!!!

Now I'm reading "Perfect Match", another book by Jodi Picoult. I'm hoping to have all of her books read by the end of the year.

I finished "Perfect Match" the other night - not as suspensful as other Picoult books. I was able to predict the big "surprise" long before it was revealed.

Just downlowded "Harvesting of the Heart" by Picoult on my Kindle last night.
