A cruise fanatics family review of WDW

We are a family of 4. We are in our 30’s and the two girls are 5 and 10. We usually cruise on vacation but thought it was time to do Disney. First impressions well not great. On the way to our room at POP we noticed two of those black rat trap boxes sitting at the edge of some trees and shrubs. What a turn off. I understand that they need them but come on hide them a bit…hey its Disney put under a fake rock or farther away from the line of sight at least. The room was adequate if you didn’t mind mold in the corners of the bathroom. The chamber maid hardly put any effort into cleaning. Mirrors had streaks all over it for the entire 8 nt stay. We were also not happy at being woken from a phone call at 8am from lost and found to see if we had found a ring from the prior guest. Come on can’t you call during the day and leave a message!! Staff well we are use to the friendly happy staff on a cruise. We had to work at getting smiles from any CM. I was also shocked at how uninformed the staff is when we asked basic questions. Example: I asked 4 CM’s including one manager and guest relations about internet where it was available. None of them had an answer. Another example I Asked what was the best way to get from POP to boardwalk and again came up empty. Food at the POP was horrible. Granite it is a value resort but they could easily do better. The guests were not much better. On a cruise we have run into a fare share of rude people but not like Disney. It was disheartening to see perfectly healthy adults sitting on the bus all proud of themselves that they had a seat but would never offer their seat to an older lady who obviously needed to sit. This situation played over and over again. I was also shocked at the way people parented their kids. Over heard a mother say to her daughter who wanted to swim in the pool rather then go to the parks again bribe her by telling her if she was good and stopped crying that she would take her to chuckee cheese when she got home…..come on lady you are at Disney!! Way to many parents pulling tired kids around and around the parks when the kids just wanted to rest at the hotel. We were not impressed with the service or shall I say the lack of. Maybe we are spoiled by cruises but they even said next vacation they want to cruise. The parks weren’t much better. At MGM we saw the rat trap again as we left Indiana Jones. Bathroom were frequently a mess. Trash cans over flowing toilets I could not use do to the filth. Generally it was a disappointment. I did not go expecting a cruise but I sure expected to be Wowed and frankly we weren’t.

To wrap up it would have been a lot better if the staff were better ( friendlier and knowledgeable), the guests were well mannered, didn’t have to see rat traps, room cleaner(no mold) bathrooms cleaned in a timely manner and food at the pop brought up to at least edible. Just our opinion. Now I will end it at that and start planning my next CRUISE!!

The POP is advertized as a Value Resort, so you did not spend big bucks to stay there. If you ever go again, try the Grand Floridian...maybe you'll find that to your liking. Or AKL, or Beach or Yacht Club - there are so many great resorts from which to choose. If you do not want so much Disney, the Swan and Dolphin are good choices and they sometimes have good rates.

I think people who have heard a lot about Disney from tried and true fans can easily be disappointed...

But it does kind of sound like you went not because you really wanted to but because you thought it was time to do it.. You picked the least expensive resort, and so what did you expect? Queen Elizabeth as your neighbor? :)

Disney is not for everyone and maybe not for you..but I do hope your little ones were able to enjoy and not hear their parent putting down a place that could hold magic for young and so not young.

Enjoy your next cruise! :)
:wave2:

And you are correct it was VALUE...we did get a good price all though all said and done food, tickets, hotel was still far more expensive then my 7dy cruise in a penthouse. I did not expect the queen but just good old folks like the people on the boards. If we were to go again soon we will probably pay the difference and stay at the Boardwalk. It look very very nice. Had I known that Boardwalk was that much nicer I would have paid the difference even if it had cut the trip down by a day or two. I think that was the other problem to long of a stay. The kids did have a good time and did get some magic.......they were just tired and enjoyed the layed back feel of a cruise. See we are a family always on the go either inlaws amusment parks beaches after school sports and so on an so forth so I think a relaxing cruise is what we need to unwind from our daily rat race!! Thansk for the kind response@

Actually, I think you are right about the long stay...that can be draining. I read on the boards about folks who go for 10 days or two weeks and I could not do it for that long. When I did the POP is was for a long weekend - 8 nights would be too much.
Also, I do understand about the staff and the guests - but, as you know, it's one of those things that does happen.

Boardwalk is lovely. I was in heaven at the Grand Floridian - also another really nice advantage to both the MK and Epcot resorts is being so close to those parks.

I understand what you wrote about being a busy family and looking forward to relaxing..and I certainly understand if you did not find that at the POP. I spent 3 nights at GF in September and felt I'd been away a good 5 nights - it was just what I needed. A million miles away from everyday.

Glad your little ones enjoyed their visit.

Take care.

I should add that it was still a good vacation and was glad to get away!! We really enjoyed a lot of the shows and rides!! After rereading my review I can see that it does seem negative. It was not bad by any means....we are just ready for another cruise. Infact we are talking about going for 3 days before our next cruise. get the best of both worlds!!

Thanks! We've sailed on Celebrity.

What didn't you like about the Norwegin Dawn. Is that the one that sails out of NYCity? (or NJ?)

Yes it sails to the bahamas in the summer with a stop at port canaveral and in the winter it does the caribbean. We enjoyed very much. However it was are first 7 day cruise and thought it was a bit short. Also leaving NY in march made a couple days cold. Freestyle dinning was good too. It just was a little less WOW as Celebrity Princess. Still great though.

Thanks again, we prefer 7 day cruises and sail in late summer so weather is not a problem.

We were on the extended to a 10 day disney cruise (the 8/27 7 day that was caught in hurrican Francis) and I doubt we'd ever book more then 7 days again.

We've sailed Holland American, HomeLines, Celebrity and Disney.

They all have their good and bad points but I think as far as food Celebrity wins hands down.

Thanks for your input.

If you go to Disney again, pick a Deluxe, you will find it more to your cruise tastes. At least we did.
