I read on AllEars that if you're 1 year old, you can go on Indy Speedway with an adult. Is this true? And can the child (ours will be almost 2 by then) sit on a lap or does he have to be in a seat?

I also noticed on AllEars that it says you have to be 3 yrs old to ride Maelstrom. We brought DS this past Feb and he was just over 1. Nobody said a word to us. Is AllEars' info outdated?

Last question: Is the Backlot Tours at MGM a tame ride? I'm wondering if my mom(66) will be able to ride with us. And I assume DS2 can ride too.

At Indy Speedway there is no height limit to ride in a car, there is to drive it though (52").Purely because smaller kids can't reach the pedals. What you can do is let the child 'steer' and have the adult use the pedals.
As for Maelstrom there is no height requirement, perhaps allears meant that as the ride is dark and a little scary, it was recommending it for pre-schoolers rather than toddlers and infants.

I forgot to say about Indy, not sure but I doubt that your child could ride on your lap, as there is a seatbelt. They might be some concern of your child being thrown from the car if hit from behind by another car (you can get bumped into, you're not supposed to do that but it does happen)

Here's how it reads....
Maelstrom-- Minimum age 3 to ride; Guests with health restrictions and expectant mothers may wish to bypass the ride.

Tomorrowland Speedway-- Children under the age of 12 months should not ride. Must be at least 52 inches to ride alone. Persons who do not meet the minimum height requirement of 52" (132 cm) must ride with a responsible person who meets the requirement.

Here's what Disney says ...

No restrictions at all are listed for Maelstrom.

Tomorrowland Speedway -- Children under the age of 12 months should not ride. To drive a Speedway car alone, you must be at least 52" (132cm) tall.
Persons who do not meet the minimum height requirement of 52" (132 cm) must ride with a responsible person who meets the requirement. For safety, you should be in good health and free from high blood pressure, heart, back or neck problems, motion sickness, or other conditions that could be aggravated by this adventure. Expectant mothers should not ride.

I checked the park maps from a couple of weks ago, and there are no restrictions other than those WDSearcher and I have mentioned. Actually the park map for MK doesn't have the under 12 months restriction on it, but I would imagine that it is the case, the restraints used wouldn't really work for an infant.

Your Mom will be fine it is a nice relaxing ride. It does shake a bit in the Canyon but not to bad. My 78yy DGM LOVE IT!!!!

Our DS is 2 and for Indy we have him sit in the seat with the steering wheel. I can sit in the other seat and reach the gas pedal without a problem. He is then able to steer the car. I usually have one arm around him to make sure he doesn't slide too much or try to get out. I am also able to help him steer if his attention span is too short or is having trouble.

Thanks! Can anyone help on my Backlot Tours question?

Looking at the park map (I am in the middle of big scrapbook prep work, so my maps and stuff are all at hand) The back lot tour has no restrictions of any kind, so as far as being to bumpy for Mom, I think you will be okay. There are some explosions and fire, lots of special effects. Will they scare your 2 year old?, kind of a hard question, probably not, but you never know, it's pretty loud, and the CM's play it up a bit. I think the narration will go over their head a little bit, but it was still fun for my DS when he went on it (he went on when he had just turned 3, naturally being a boy he liked the explosions!)

We took our ds that was 9 months on this ride a few weeks ago when we were there. He had no problems what so ever. I would just make sure that your ds2 is sitting on the right hand side of the tram so the part in the cannon doesn't scare him (fire and water).
