Is there anything like parks pass reservations at Universal, or is just a date based ticket needed for admission? Do I need to make an account on the app to get a virtual line reservation?

There is no park reservation system. It's first come, first allowed. Even if you have a specific date based ticket it does not guarantee you entry if the park reaches the current limited capacity. You will be able to get a refund if you can't get in.

Only thinkg that will give you priority access (when park reaches capacity) is if you're staying on-site.
