A Couple of Gripes...

You're not the only one. The only flat screen in our house is a 15 inch the in-laws bought for the girls. TV is just not a priority around here.

Not that I love everything the networks have to throw at me, but let me guess. You don't have cable or satellite either?

The thing that pushed us over the edge in the LCD world was watching football games in High Def with surround sound. It also makes "movie night with the kids" a way more enjoyable activity. (And less expensive than the theaters.)

Now that I have my HD slingbox setup, we're taking our expensive HD cable and DVR with us everywhere. 99% of the lineup is still crap but we can pick and chose the good stuff and watch our our LCD of choice.

I don't care what kind of TV they have (the channel lineup is awful though - and they are slowly adding flatscreens, some resorts will just have to wait longer), I don't eat at the resort but I can see how many would love to have a food court (talk to Disney but I bet they still won't build you one) and I think the DVC resort stores are fine.

Oh my, now I really feel bad. I have three televisions at home and none are flatscreen. They are great big, honkin' TV sets. Two of them don't even have the connections on the front of the TV.

You have different prioties and likes, its your choice of what you like, sarcasm wouldn't be appreciated if we "couldn't live" if we did get something you loved/liked/preferred.

I didn't really think about it beforehand, but I would have been really pissed off if I had purchased the dining plan and had such a small crowded CS location to use. Lucky for us, I had already planned to cook in the room, so it didn't matter. While having a CS the size of an All-Star resort may not be necessary, the existing accomodations could certainly be better.

Wow.....how sad is that. I am actually an AKV owner and they didn't even build a CS for Kidani! We're going to be there in March, so I will have to check out the walk to Jambo for CS. However, I don't think I'm going to be participating in the dining plan for a very long time. Will likely cook simple meals in the room and throw in a few TS meals here and there. Oh well....there are worse things.

The time between now and March feels like such a long time and I could use a vacation REAL bad right now. Stuff like this just doesn't matter right now. I just want to BE THERE. Having said that, there is no excuse for poor maintenance and I would be pretty ticked off if I arrived on my badly-needed vacation to find that something doesn't function properly or a poorly-cleaned room.

I don't think it is "sad." It is simply a shift in American social norms. People used to enjoy a healthy sit down table servce meal. The last several year we've shifted to a mindset of "instant" fast foods, like McD's, Wendy's and Taco Bell.

..which is why I think this "must have a flat screen so I can actually "enjoy" TV watching" arguement is dumb. I'd imagine a majority of consumers think a flat panel is all they need. NO! You're missing 50% of the HD experience if you use the built-in speakers instead of a proper surround sound system. You also need HDTV source material (and last October at AKV, the flat screens mostly looked like crap because the only HD channels were the locals, the rest were crappy SD cable feeds.) If you have SD material, you actually get a much better picture with those good 'ole SD Tubes. I know there's a ton of people out there watching blurry fat people (because they want their picture "stretched" because they are not otherwise using all of their really expensive new TV)

I believe SSR has Sony Trinitron tubes, about as good as a SD picture you could get. I think they are, at least 25" sets which have the same height as 42" flat screens (and taller than the 32" flat screens at AKV, so a face would actually be smaller)

I can see where some appreciate the different menu choices at SSR, but when DS walks into AP and exclaims "ewww whats that smell" (referring to the rosemary herb roasted chicken wafting through the air), different is not appreciated by all..

AP's biggest problem is way too many guests for such a small, congested area, and lines can be huge. We've got in line for breakfast 30 minutes (running late on a check-out day) before the lunch switchover, and when switchover time comes, a CM has to ask those in line if they still want breakfast (most did, that's why we all got there 30 minutes "early!")

I completely agree. I'd rather have the SD tube TVs if there are so few HD channels.

AS far as being used as commerce...DVC Memebers are not supposed to be renting their units in a "commercial" manner. Disney, who rents the units for cash, can equip the units any way they wish, at their expense.

Where in the world did I infer that Disney should only upgrade selected units if they deemed it desirable to enhance cash rentals? They would need to upgrade all the units at the resort. Ya got that right! AP was a nightmare the one time we stayed at SSR. I think they had some sort of message on the TV's at SRR saying that if you go to AP during actual breakfast and lunch dining times that you may experience very long waits.

Long lines of people waiting to order food, followed by waiting in another line to actually pay for the food after waiting in the first line. Then, after waiting to order and waiting in line 2 to pay, you get to wait for the food! And, after all that, just see how much fun it is when you get the wrong food order. AP was not a very magical food experience.

For everyone who complains about the walk from Kidani to Jambo to get food and the fact that there is no CS at Kidani, you may think twice about your complaints if you ever go to AP. Thankfully they didn't put an AP type of CS at Kidani.

Disney can equip/upgrade the DVC units, at their expense, with any equipment or electronics they wish. Logically, they would upgrade all the units at a given resort, not a select few, as any unit can be rented out.

I find it pretty funny that people are complaining about the tv's My personal opinion is, who cares about a tv. Don't anyone take that the wrong way, but are you really there to stay in your room and watch tv or enjoy family time together by swimming, going to the parks, or enjoying the atmosphere- things you can't do at home. JMHO

Well said! If I wanted to watch TV I'd stay home. Since I'm on vacation the last thing I want or need is to be a couch potato. But then again I can see some advantages. If folks stay in their rooms to watch TV then I won't have to wait in line as long for "Soarin'" or "Toy Story Midway Mania"!

It's not about staying in your room all day watching TV. For me, I like going to bed with the TV on in the background. I also like to have t on while getting ready for my day.
Why is it that many people have complained about the Internet? Do people go on vacation to be glued to their computer?

Don't you want a well appointed room?? I do..
I don't cook in the room, but I don't want to see a harvest gold stove in the kitchen.
Why even have a TV? Or why not have an old black & white set that uses tubes?
