On wikipedia i saw this:
At the D23 convention in Anaheim California on September 2009, Disney Animation creative head John Lasseter explained that the film has a lot of "girl power." This new interpretation of Rapunzel will be a more independent princess, and she uses her 70-foot-long hair for a variety of purposes, such as a whip, or a ladder.

here is the link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rapunzel_(film)

Now my question is, did Mr. Lasseter really say this? :confused3
If yes, what a shame. If they are going to start creating new spins on those classic fairy tales, I am going to have to hunt down John Lasseter and have good talk with him!

The "Disneyfieing" of fairy tales is certainly nothing new.

(I also prefer E. H. Shepard's Winnie the Pooh over the Disney version)

Well i understand that some classic fairy tales are different in the disney versions because of some not family friendly elements that were in the original fairy tales. But is there more than just that?

Some fairy tales truly are grim, not just written by Grimn!

I wasn't sure I could come up with supporting arguments, so...

"For instance, in Disney's Cinderella, once Cinderella has lost her slipper and the prince is determined to have only the girl whose small foot can fit into the slipper, the stepsisters nearly break their necks for the chance to try on the shoe, but have no luck fitting their large feet into the shoe.

In the original fairy tale, when the girls' stepmother sees this turn of events, she demands the first sister cut off her toe so that she can fit into the shoe. Later, on the carriage ride back to the prince's castle, the prince notices the sister's foot bleeding and discovers her ruse. The same scenario happens with the other sister, only this time, it's her heel that she cuts off."

"Disney's The Little Mermaid has Ariel going on to live happily ever after with her landdwelling prince. The ending of the original tale, penned by Hans Christian Andersen, is anything but happy, however. In the original fairy tale, The Little Mermaid dies, becoming nothing more than foam in the sea as she later looks down from heaven on her prince."

I think we will have to see first the movie and then judge ;) we'll wait ;)

I think this is why the Little Mermaid is my favourite Disney movie, I had the book and cassette when I was little of the original story and it used to make me cry every time - hearing the music they used makes me sad even now:sad2: So for Disney to make it with a happy ending was amazing :goodvibes

I know they do try and cut out the nasty true to life stuff but totally changing the story line makes me wonder if it's worth them basing it on Rapunzel - why not just imagine a new character and story?
Oh well we will see :)

My thoughts exactly. I dont like that whole 'rapunzel now has super powers!' Thing.

Well, in the book, I believe that it (Hair) was used as a ladder...of sorts...so I don't think they are making a whole new story. Just Spicing it up a bit. I am really fine with that. Every time they spice things up (like the princess and the frog or enchanted), I am skeptical, but then I love it!

Maybe it will come out good..... But for now i'll stick with not liking that idea.... So anyone that went to the expo and saw this presentation hear him say that?
