~~ A Celebration of Life-long friendship ~~ Sew Sweet 16 ~~ Now N' Thens 3/11

D, I am so sorry I got so many updates behind. I got totally behind with Mom and then the holidays and traveling to see the kids.

I'm sorry you never got to Dinoland...but that heat can get to you after a while. I love when V gets in her moods...she always has that same face.

Glad that Alli and your BF's daughter listened and got the Photopass pictures.

Glad you got to Riverside, even if you ended up having to take a bus (I do like their food court).

The photopass pics from Blizzard Beach are awesome. I've not been there in over 17 years.

Hmmm....you might be on to something...Ghiradelli's instead of dinner. I like that idea.

Well I am finally all caught up. So glad to hear everyone had a lovely holiday. Today everyone is back to their normal routine; well as normal as it can get. Waiting for my brother to drop off his dog for the evening; as they cannot take her to the hotel. They are waiting to hear from the insurance company so they can start the work in the house. We all hope it's soon!
Oh the dreaded three weeks of no bus. Hope everyone had a pleasant day back to school/work.

Hello. Loved the updates. I didn't get around to our tree this weekend. Hopefully, I will get it down by Valentine's Day. I had Christmas/Birthday giftcards, so I went shopping. Plus, there was all the cooking for the Whole30. I am really happy to have made it to day 8. I know I can do this.

We watched Downton Abbey too. Marissa kept asking why we liked this show. So, we would agree it was a bit slow last night. We also tried watching Galavant. We are not fans.

Marissa keeps mentioning Cards Against Humanity, but she has not told me exactly what it is.

All the kids are back to school this week. I am super excited. Nice to have them away from the house. However, that means dance starts back up. Busy time begins. Marissa then leaves for Texas, very early on Saturday for the College Football Championship game. She loved Disney. It was supposed to be super busy, but it rained that evening and people left. So, she got to ride tons of rides. The people that toured with her are super thankful. They were amazed at all the stuff they got to ride in 6 hours.

I should get some work done. Have a great day.

You are doing great Shannon! Day 8 is almost 1/3 of the way there! You've totally got this!

Yah - I love Downton... One of the best, I just hope this season is better than last season. It's a bummer to wait a whole year for the show to start again just to be disappointed by the entire season.

Still not sure about Cards for Humanity... If you can avoid it - I would. DEFINITIELY NOT for anyone younger than 15/16.

Glad Marissa had such a great time at Disney! It's hard not to, IMO.

I hope you have a great day too!

D~

Stalker here!! I've been stalking your TRs for years!! LOVE your reports and your family seems fabulous!!

LOVE LOVE LOVE the blogging you're doing for your weight loss/lifestyle change! Such an inspiration!!

My question is you mentioned a non-salted crunchy almond butter from Trader Joe's on the previous page - what does the jar look like?? I thought I'd try it!!

I've never tried almond butter but I'm branching out and trying new things....

I've recently been diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes, so I'm trying to figure out my new "food life" and I'm looking for suggestions of good tasting sugarless/sugar free foods!

I have to applaud you for taking and posting all of your before/after pictures too - Over the last few months (and before my diabetes diagnosis) my DH and I started walking and I'm down 23lbs with an overall goal of -75lbs..and I am buying the smaller sizes and I LOVE IT!!

I wished I had taken various body measurements before we started walking but who knew at the time I'd actually lose weight??! , but I know that my 2012 WDW pictures and the ones we take in our upcoming June 2015 pictures will be vastly different!!

Thanks for inspiring us!!

Welcome!!! So, which one are you? Avery or Todd? Or neither? :)

I am so happy to have you here and reading along! I love it when people introduce themselves.

It sounds like you have been doing some amazing things with your life to make progress - that is awesome! What an amazing loss you and DH have had so far!!! Keep it going!!!

I do want to mention, make sure you stay away from foods that are labeled as "sugar-free" or "sugarless"... I know, as a diabetic, you must stay away from sugar - but foods labeled that way almost always have chemical sugars in them - and those chemical sugars are HORRIBLY bad for you too. YOu are better off not having any sugar at all. Clearly - it's your body and totally up to you, but I get so frustrated when Dr.s advise to eat sugarless and sugar free products, when they know those chemicals are just as bad/worse for you in other ways. <--- I am not a Dr... So, obviously, take your Dr.s advise before mine - but I highly recommend you research this yourself. :lovestruc

I know what you mean... I have NO pictures from my first few months. I wish I would have, but to be honest, when I started this - I just assumed I would fail yet again. So, I didn't want to take any pictures, because I didn't want to jynx myself...

I am happy to share my journey here, I know there are a lot of people out there who struggle with this very thing, and if my perseverance helps just one person - then it's all worth it to me. Now, after almost 3 years, this lifestyle is just habit for me, I can't imagine my life any other way... But it took a LONG time to get to this point.

Here's a photo of the Almond Butter I purchase... Seriously, cannot live long with out this - I love to eat it on apples and bananas.

20150105_204636.jpg

I wish you the best of luck - I hope you will continue to check in once in a while to let me know how you are doing.

Sounds like you had a nice weekend.

I did! I hope you did too Lillian!

D, I am so sorry I got so many updates behind. I got totally behind with Mom and then the holidays and traveling to see the kids.

No worries Kathy - I know you have been busy... I have been too. Thanks for taking the time to catch up.

Hehehe... I think Ghiradellis instead of dinner was a great choice - highly recommend. ::yes::

V's moods are sometimes annoying, but we are so used to them - we just carry on. :thumbsup2

I hope you are well, I did peruse your TR the other day, but I am so very behind there - just like everywhere. I need to take the time to sit down and catch up.

Oh the dreaded three weeks of no bus. Hope everyone had a pleasant day back to school/work.

Hi Lynee! I hope things move along quickly for your brother and his family - I cannot imagine how hard this must be on them. Sending hugs and prayers their way. Please keep me updated if you can! :gourphug:

**********************************************************

I was back to work at Target yesterday... It went fast - I was busy.

Josh worked a double shift yesterday, so the girls and I were on our own all night. We were quite lazy and did nothing. It's nice to do that once in a while.

I am starting day 9 of my Whole30 today... I feel like it's going quite easy. To be honest, it really isn't that different than how I normally eat.

I made my very first batch of Ghee last night. I'd purchased a jar from Trader Joe's a few months ago, and to be honest - I didn't like it very much. So, I thought I would try to make my own to see if it tasted any better - to my surprise, it did. So, I guess I will be making my own ghee from now on. ::yes::

Today, I am heavy lifting...

And back to work in my sewing room... A little annoyed with myself that I never got up there to clean it during my break. I need to make that a priority soon.

V is home sick today... Her tummy is bugging her - just as well, then I don't have to drive to town a bazillion times.

I hope you all have a great day!

Prayers and good thoughts to all of you! :grouphug:

Hey there! Happy new year! you have been busy!
I have been reading along adn just know i love you all!!!

HA!! I'm actually NEITHER! Avery&Todd were the dogs we had at the time I created my profile and sad to say that Todd is no longer with us, but Avery is, and she has a new brother, Jake!!

I'm Bitsy - I know, it's one of those kookie southern nicknames I was blessed with when I was born - my parents named me officially "Mary Elizabeth" but never called me that for 1 day!! Its a curse - I live with 2 names now - I go by Mary at work (b/c its easier than having to explain "Bitsy" to everyone..."you know, it's just like that spider...the itsy bitsy one?"...:rotfl:, but all my family and friends know me as Bitsy - and I like to think that Mary and Bitsy are 2 different people - like my more serious "work Mary" and then there's "really fun Bitsy"...:rolleyes1

:rolleyes2

anyhoo...

so, the diabetes - yeah, it pretty much sucks, but I am familiar with it, as I had gestational diabetes with my youngest who is now almost 13 :scared1:...I do try to stay away from sugar and I count my carbs at every meal, and the walking that DH and I are doing really helps keep my numbers under control...

Here's a weird fact about me - I don't eat fruit...., yeah, I know...I haven't eaten it since I was like 2 - one day I just told my mom "no" and that was it...:rolleyes1...so that's a good thing now with the diabetes since there is so much sugar in there..

so, I will need to figure out some other way to eat the almond butter - maybe just serving size on the 3-4 crackers I can have for a snack..

and honestly, I'm really trying to cut out/down on the sugar in general...thankfully I've never been a big dessert person or sugar person in general and my soda of choice is a diet Dr. Pepper..

I enjoy seeing your every day meal pictures, and I like the idea of a paleo/pure diet, but my issue would be the carbs that you're eating - since I have to limit my intake at each meal, I get to up the veggies & meats....

But, maybe I should check out a book at the library about paleo - and what is the cookbook you got for before Christmas? The eat to live book?? :confused3

I know that you plan out your meals even when you go out, so you'll appreciate that I'm already scouring the menus at WDW to plan out my meals too??!! and I'm trying to figure out how many bites of desserts I can have with all the added walking we'll be doing....I know I have to watch my sugar intake, but from what I can read, the extra walking and heat can drive sugar levels down, so if I have to have a few bites of someone's ice cream sandwich (along with some nuts/cheese stick) for a snack at WDW, then so be it!

Ok, so enough about me - thanks again for listening!!

Great TR!!!

Happy New Year.
I'm glad your new diet plan is working for you. You look really good in your after pictures.
We took the tree down on Sunday. It was a fake one so it didn't take long. Afterwards, my daughter and I went out thrifting. All we found was a flameglow mixing bowl and some cornell snack plates. We had fun, though.
I'm glad your day at Target went quickly. It wasn't too busy at work yesterday but it wasn't slow either. We reset the movies for the new releases. I'm trying to teach one of my co workers how to do it but he has trouble with the double packs. I have faith in him. He'll figure it out. When I left, they were working on the movie fixture in action alley.
I hope V. feels better soon.
Have a great day.
Liz

Day 9! Congrats. I need to buy more jars. I need to make my own ghee (I am not a fan of what I bought) and I need to make mayo, but all the jars I own have homemade chicken bone broth in them right now.

I have been really going through the Disney blues this week. I guess since Marissa went and then the 31 days of entering to win a WDW vacation that started January 1st has me really needing to go.

I haven't started the heavy lifting yet. I guess I am sort of scared and not sure I have the right equipment at home, but don't want to go to the gym and make a fool of myself. I guess I will have to get past that. What weights did you start out at? My dumbells only go to 15 lbs. I am thinking I am going to need heavier than that.

Have a good day. I hope V feels better soon.

Great TR!!!

Loved hearing the story of your name... I am sort of the same way... Parents named me Dorine - and for the most part, everyone calls me that. However, my extended family all calls me DJ (My initials before I got married) - or some variation of that... Deej, DJ Mckay (no idea why? Because it rhymes?)... And now everyone here calls me D~, because that's how I sign everything. I answer to all of them. :thumbsup2

Wow!!! You don't eat fruit? I cannot imagine. LOL Well... Hmm what to eat your almond butter on? A spoon? I've been known to do that too. :rolleyes1

I know you also have to watch your carbs being diabetic - and it may seem to you that I am eating a lot of carbs, but watch those cracker/grain/processed foods - they have way more carbs in one or two servings than the combo of all fruits and veggies I eat in a day. I know of many people who are totally able to control their diabetes just by diet change alone... So, I would do some research in that area too. :thumbsup2 And I am not trying to critique the food you eat, I promise... But giving up soda (especially diet soda) was the best thing I ever did for my health... So many chemicals in the diet versions. I replaced my soda with sparkling water - and I love it. It did take some getting used to, because it seems rather flavorless - but it has the carbonation that I love and it's portable, so it was an excellent choice for me. Just food for thought. :wizard:

The "It Starts With Food" book that I got before Christmas is a rigid 30 day program, which is intended to "reprogram" your body, and help a person clean up their diet - most times allowing them to find out if they have any allergies to common foods (grain, dairy, gluten, etc...). I am currently starting Day 10 of my Whole30 right now, and I am loving this. I feel great, and I didn't think it was possible to feel better than I already did. If you would like more info... You can visit www.whole30.com. Otherwise, a couple of other books I'd recommend... "Primal Blueprint" by Mark Sisson. "Grain Brain" can't remember the author. "Eat the Yolks" by Liz Wolfe. "It Starts With Food" by Melissa and Doug Hartman <---- All great books and listed in the order I'd read them. Many of them have the same info, just presented in a different way. If you are looking for cookbooks... I recommend Well Fed and Well Fed 2... Also the Nom Nom Paleo cookbook. :thumbsup2

Awesome about planning your meals while in WDW - it's super helpful to do that. Just knowing what is there, and what you really want to splurge on, I feel that helped me a lot by choosing ahead of time what was worth it for me. Although, once you are there, it's a different story - so be ready for that part of it too... I wasn't. :rolleyes1

Have a great day - and I hope I didn't scare you away with my endless rambling about food and research. :lovestruc

HI Liz!!! Happy New Year to you too!!!

Yes, the Whole30 is going very well for me, I love it. Granted, I am only on Day 10, that might change in a few days. :rotfl:

SOunds like you found some great things while you were thrifting. It seems like our stores only ever have the same stuff over and over again, so I don't look as often as I used to. However, I always have my eyes peeled for a good vintage sewing machine. :lovestruc

I hope your co-worker is able to catch on soon.

Thanks... Not sure how she is doing this mornign... Will write about it below.

I hope you have a great day too!

Day 9! Congrats. I need to buy more jars. I need to make my own ghee (I am not a fan of what I bought) and I need to make mayo, but all the jars I own have homemade chicken bone broth in them right now.

Yes, seriously -make your own ghee... I really didn't like the TJ's I'd purchased, but the home-made, I totally LOVE. Big, big difference in taste. IMO.

I know the feeling, I find it hard to do much here on The Dis, because Disney just seems like a distant dream for me. So sad.

Sadly, I don't remember which weights I started at when I started lifting... I know I started LOW though... If I were to guess, I would say I started off at approx 10lbs for deadlifts and squats... Then I progressed from there. But when I first (very first) started working out, I did NO weight at all, and I couldn't even do a full squat for months. So, really take the time to work up to it. Injury will set you back so far if you work too hard. Promise?

I do all of my heavy lifting with my adjustable dumbbells... They adjust from 5lbs to 45lbs... I am getting close to the end with those, so I am not sure what I am going to do next. I have an olympic bar with weight plates, but I put that bar down back in June when I injured my back, and I haven't picked it up since. :sad2: Just afriad of injuring it again. I am sure - eventually - I will be forced to.

I will, thank you... I'll have a V update below.

Sounds like you had a nice relaxing day yesterday.

I did - it was nice. I hope you did too. :lovestruc

**********************************************************

So, yesterday...

V stayed home, she wasn't feeling well. At about 7:30, she came into my office while I was lifting to show me her arms... She was broken out in hives all over - bad too - arms, legs, feet, face, neck ears... The only place not broken out was her torso/back. Poor kid. I wasn't sure what it was that was causing it - obviously an allergic reaction to something. I suspected it was the antibiotic she was taking from her Staph infection - but she only had 1 dose left out of a 20 dose set, and I would think it would have presented itself before this. So, I made a Dr. appt for yesterday afternoon...

I went to work upstairs... I managed to get my next bag cut out and quilted.

Then I got ready and took V to town. Yup - it was an allergic reaction to her meds. So, the meds were stopped, and she was put on Benedryl. Thankfully school was called off today due to the weather - so she can keep taking the Benedryl (it knocks her out - cold) all day. Her hives showed no improvement as of last night before bed. Sigh. Poor kid.

After we got home, we all crashed... I was soooo tired. Josh came home from work early... So we all had a nice nap. I ddin't wake until 5:30... So, I threw a quick dinner together... Then we hung out on our respective tablets until it was time to go get Allison.

One of my local friends posted on FB that no travel was advised in our area - so Josh took his truck to get Alli... He told me when he got home that it was a good thing he did - he said the roads were so drifted over, I never would have made it through in my edge.

But we are all home safe now and warm.

Here's a photo of my food from yesterday - since there is a little interest here about how I eat...

10891960_10206016609883095_4142150142749764822_n.jpg

Meal #1 and Meal #2 were the exact same thing yesterday... It kept me satisfied all morning and it was quick to prepare. So... 3 home-made sausage balls, broccoli slaw and onion sauteed in ghee with 2 over easy eggs on top. :wizard: Dinner was chicken and roasted veggies. YUM! Not pictured... I had an apple with almond butter right before bed - I was hungry. I also want to add, Meal #1 and #2 are always eaten on "luncheon" plates, so event though it appears in pictures that I am eating a ton of food, it's really an adequate amount. :)

Today, I will be working out this morning.

Then I will be appliqueing all day.

When I am done with that, the girls and I are going to hang out. Gus was supposed to come over after work, since the girls are off of school - but he texted Allison last night that he didn't want to drive in the cold. So, we'll see if he changes his mind or not? :confused3

Othewise it will be a pretty boring day.

I hope you all have a wonderful one! Stay warm! Prayers and good thoughts go out to all of you! :grouphug:

D~

I hope V's hives are better today.
Every time I see your broccoli slaw it reminds me I need to do a trader Joe's run.
Did you use salted or unsalted butter in your ghee? I have a pound of kerry gold salted butter in my fridge, just need to find my fine mesh strainer ( or buy a new one). We threw out a ton of kitchen stuff that we didn't use when we redid our kitchen, including my food saver which would come in handy for freezing stuff now.

So sad about the hives. I had that once. I can't take antibiotics with sulfa in it. It took about 2 days for the hives to go away with the Benedryl.

I did good with eating until last night. Chelsea and I didn't make it home from dance until 7:45 pm. That didn't leave much time. So, I made the kids dinner and sliced up a pear and had some of the TJs Almond Butter (that I picked up last night). Not the best dinner, but I wasn't that hungry but knew I needed to feed myself something. I don't know if my tastes are changing, but before this, you couldn't pay me to eat a pear. I have had 3 in the last week.

I was wondering if you had the olympic bar. I am going to have to go to Play It Again Sports to see if they have any used equipment. The adjustable weights seem like a good idea. I can already do most of the exercises with the 10-15 lb weights. I am going to read through the book again and hopefully start on Monday.

Sorry about the weather. Hopefully, you all will find something to do.

Good morning Miss D - loving your updates - thank you for the log! I will probably never touch a straight bar again after I tore a rotator cuff back a long, long, time ago (in my 20's); the doc I went to said our bodies are not made to lift a straight bar really, and dumbbells were actually better as we have to place more emphasis on balance, form, etc. I will try to starting lifting Monday!

Funny about the Christmas tree; we have an artificial one which gives me reason to delay since it doesn't dry out - I usually get to it mid-January; it is so hard to wrap all the stuff back up.

Hope V is doing okay - that is so strange how her system just all of a sudden decided it didn't like the antibiotics.

We are actually having some "cold" days, at least for Texas, the high today and the next few days is in the 40's; nothing compared to you right?

Cannot wait for another post about your trip; keep the Disney magic coming!

Thank you again for inspiring us all! I am slowly but surely making my way with this exercising - I just need to get in a routine and find my way. Thank you for your help!

Have a good rest of the week - stay safe! Hugs! Carol

I hope V feels better soon.

I hope you have a great day in your sewing room.

Poor V...hope she feels better today.

Slightly more normal at work and all. I did not get on the bag yesterday, but that has been the only day off. And I'm planning on punching something today. The bag. Punching the bag. Not the people I've been talking to for work. Really. The bag.

I know a pretty good amount about the sugars and additives. I work at a science center, after all, and diabetes runs in my family. It boils down to pure laziness on my part. I'm not the biggest fan of cooking, and although it always surprises me how easy it is I just don't think about cooking less processed foods.

Well, baby steps. and we'll see what the new year holds.

Besides a new stipling/embroidery/quilting foot for my sewing machine. I'm very excited. And if I can ever get to a fabric store to pick up heavy duty needles, I'll be giving it a whirl.

Stay warm everyone!

My sis lives in Mt and she was snowed in on Mon. When ever she post I'm thankful we don't normally get snow. I keep telling my Dh that when he gets out we're moving down south somewhere.

I have allergies to several antibiotics and its not unusual for a reaction to be delayed. The drug builds up in your system and then your body reacts to it. I was on an antibiotic long term for my roseaca and when I changed doctors, the new one took me off of it - until my roseaca acted up again. He put me back on the same antibiotic I had been taking for months and right away I had an allergic reaction to it.

We are having temps in the low teens, single digits and wind chills of -20. I hate winter, hate being cold, and cannot wait to go to Florida in 2 weeks. With my luck it will be a record cold spell while we are there.:rotfl2:

I never did get back to you with an explanation of the South Beach diet - it is basically a low carb, high protein diet. It starts off with 2 weeks of no (or extremely low) carb level - lots of eggs, meat and veggies, although carrots and white potatoes are not permitted. Diet drinks are permitted, but I've really been limiting the amount of diet soda that I drink. C and I did the 2 week part several years ago and I lost weight and inches (I was working out at a local Curves at the time). I also stuck to the eating plan fairly closely until the holidays (I started in June), although I didn't lose much more weight. I wasn't working out much either.

So fast forward to today - I've been "clean" eating since Sunday. Eggs for breakfast, huge salads for lunch, with a protein added - this week has been leftover chili, and dinner has been meat and veggies. I can have a sugar free popsicle or fudgesicle for a treat - or sugar free candy, which I don't have.

I put all of the cookies that Kate and Shannon made for the holidays in the freezer, tossed all the leftovers in the fridge, and have not really been having too many cravings. I know the cravings will diminish as the 2 weeks go on, so if I can perservere through, I will be happy.

Since our gym closed unexpectedly, I haven't had anywhere to work out. I'm just not motivated enough to do it on my own at home. So I rejoined Curves. It is on my way home, so I can stop after work. I did my first workout today and left sweating.

I hope V's hives clear up soon. They definitely are no fun.

I buy almond butter at Trader Joe's, too. I keep a jar of it at work. It is great for mid-morning snacking. And it is healthier than peanut butter.

I hope V's hives are going away now. It must be miserable to have them.

Sorry everyone, I had planned to do replies this morning, but it's a bit of chaos in my house this morning.

Yesterday morning, I wound up in the ER with Victoria... She woke up and she was swollen with hives from head to toe... I expected it to be better in the morning, but it was so much worse... Face, ears, lips, palms - everywhere. I freaked out for a few minutes. They sent her home with a package of epi pens and prednisone. This morning - the rash has spread to more places, bottoms of her feet and there is definitely more of it on her legs, back, torso area - but it's less swollen, so that's good.

When we got home, Gus was here... That kid - I swear, is just the most thoughtful guy... He brought V a teddy bear, a card and a bag of cookies... I think she was almost in tears because she was so moved by his gesture. :lovestruc

Then... Alli woke up this morning with a sore throat... Sigh... It's all puffy and swollen. Then she lifted her hair to show me, and her whole neck is swollen... I tried to get her to stay home so I could take her to the Dr., but she has a HUGE presentation first hour - so she insisted on going. Sigh.

So, it's back to the Dr this morning for me - this time with Alli.

I'll try to hop on here over my lunch hour today to do replies. Sorry about that. But I must get in the shower and get out the door - I don't want Alli in school any longer than necessary.

Have a great day everyone! Prayers and Pixie Dust to all! :grouphug:

I'm so sorry V. is so sick. I hope the hives start to go away and someone came figure out why she reacted that way. My daughter is allergic to penicillum and sulfa drugs so I've sort of been in your position. Lucklly she's never had that severe reaction.
I hope Allie's okay, too. You've got your hands full with two sick girls even if they're teenagers.
Liz
