I have been a member for 10 years but I've never really had any dealings with cancelling a reservation or points in holding so here is my situation:

First off I have a June UY. I have a reservation for Jan 16-19 (MLK weekend, 36 pts) which means I have until Dec 15th to cancel penalty free but I'm not 100% on making this trip. I also have a week booked for Feb 14-21, this one is set in stone, airfare booked etc. If I cancelled the January reservation after Dec 15 and the 36 points went into holding would they jump into the Feb reservation automatically therefore leaving me 36 points to bank or do I have to make a new reservation altogether with those holding points? As of right now 4 of the 7 days in February are still available but this is a relatively popular week since most of New England has February vacation and lots of folks go to WDW. I think it may be Mardigras as well. If the points don't automatically jump to the Feb reservation I guess my only option would be to make sure there is some availability call MS and cancel a couple of nights and quickly rebook with the holding points, correct?

They do not immediately replace into an existing reservation and there would need to be availability to make the switch and use them on the Feb Vacation.

And, you can only book using holding points at 60 days out, so your choices for your popular week could be limited or non-existent at the 60 day mark.

In some cases member services will reallocate points for you. It depends on where the points came from and whether they were 7 month reservations or home resort reservations. They will usually reallocate points for 7 month reservations.

Not with holding points...those have restrictions in terms with not being able to book prior to 60 days out.

When you free up other types of points, like banked or borrowed, and have a current reservation, MS will try to reallocate for you, but that is different.

In the OP"s case, the only way to use holding points to book nights currently reserved is to reserve them as part of a new reservation and cancel out the nights of the old one that match what was just booked..
