A Canadian Version of a CB board thread...If Marijuana was legal would you partake?

If Marijuana was legal would you partake?

  • Yes I would. It's like having a drink.

  • No, but I don't mind it being legal for recreational use.

  • No, and I think it should remain illegal.

  • No I would not but it should be available for the sick only through a Doc or OTHER ANSWER Explain.

I saw this on the CB board and wanted to see if we Canadians were different than Americans on this subject. Please do not go looking for the US answer before taking this poll and I will link the US answer later on to compare...

I believe I posted on that thread the other day.:hippie: :rotfl: I voted last one because making it legal for recreational use can potentially increase the risk of exposure to children.

I believe it should remain illegal. It impairs your judgement just like alcohol.

Well, except that alcohol is not illegal. Why's that? What's the difference?

I don't know, it's not something I personally enjoy, but I can't understand it as being somehow worse than getting drunk. If that's the 'buzz' you prefer, why shouldn't you have the right?

I mean, really, I find that gov't is overstepping it's bounds. Always trying to legislate everything. Don't people have a right to the freedom of personal choice and responsibility? For goodness sake, they've just passed a law that makes it mandatory to have winter tires on my car by Dec. 15th. It's absurd! Maybe next week they'll force us to wear boots for our 'own good'. Sheesh!

Don't smoke anything or drink alcohol. Don't think pot is any better or worse than hooch.

Folks should be able to make up their own mind what they want to do. Too much alcohol or weed is no good for you. Legal or not.

The "its legal" argument doesn't seem to hold up when so many instances of legal things don't make sense. Gambling, alcohol all supported by the government. Cigarettes still around but leathal

Getting a ticket for not wearing are seat belt while certain jurisdictions don't required motorcycles riders to wear a helmet.

Not passing judgment on any of the above just points out how some laws don't make sense.

I wish the government in Ontario would make some of the clowns on the road get snow tires and take some driving lessons.

For those of you indulging in the chronic and have the munchies.
Here's a link to a free Harvey's burger. If high please do not get behind the wheel and drive.

I vote make it legal.

What's odd is I'd be the world's biggest libertine ... except I don't drink alcohol cause I can't stand the taste and I've never smoked a joint because I can't stand the thought of cigarettes (much less sharing one, ick!).

As a risk taker, I'm a flop.

Marijuana is commonly a "gateway" drug, leading to stronger types of recreational drugs.

No, I'm not saying that everyone who smokes weed will end up on crack! But, many do.

Don't mind me... ::cop:

last time I checked, no matter how strong the belch, you couldn't get second hand drunk.
No thanks.

I believe that until there is a way for police to check if someone is driving while under the influence of marijuana (and yes it does impair your judgement and reaction time) then it should remain illegal.

I believe it should remain illegal. Just my belief system. I can't say as I have ever experienced marijuana myself but know those who have and have explained it as giving a feeling of extreme drunkness. I'd be worried that there would be too many "users" out on the roads if it were legal.

I am on the fence on this subject:

The truth is pot is EVERYWHERE if you don't think it is you are blind. I have three small kids that I can't even think about getting "into" that stuff.

but the more we hide from it the more it looks tempting (to some people) I really don't think there is a "right" answer.

My thoughts exactly.

If someone is high from marijuana.. the last thing they want to do is drive.
And, unlike the US, where there is a law for driving drunk or driving under the influence, in Canada, we have a law forbidding "driving while impaired"..

Impaired could mean being tired. Or with your hand in a cast, or any other item which impairs your ability to safely drive a car. And you do not need chemical proof of impairment.

With 30,000 arrests each year, your estimated legal costs are, I believe, $500 million. If we follow the prohibitionist line of reasoning, there are 30,000 arrests a year, each imprisoned individual costs $50,000 a year, so a total cost of $1.5 billion a year. As the number of arrests increase, costs rise exponentially." source
*this 600,000 number was revised to 1.5 million in 2002 by the John Howard Society...

No imagine if that 1.5 billion was rather spent on improving the life of the poeple who seek the escape of marijuana. On top of that 1.5 billion a year, lets add the tax revenue it would generate..

Keeping it illegal isn't going to stop it... so might as well make it leal and regulate it.

With that being said.. While i would support the legalization of it, i still wouldn't do it. I don't drink now as it is i don't like being intoxicated one bit.

Personally, I don't care what other people do. My moto is 'if it doesn't affect my life then it's not my business'.

I have no interest it lighting up but I do believe that if you look at scientific research alcohol does far more damage than pot.

Let the government regulate it just like booze. That would put more money in their coffers perhaps for education or health care. What could we call it....PCBO

It should be available via perscription for those who need it medically. Otherwise? It's a judgement and mind-altering drug, and is illegal as it should be, imho.

I understand your point but it does affect everyone. I just don't want MORE people out there driving and working under the influence...There are enough people who already do without it being legal. I don't even want to think of how many people would do it if it were legal.

Ok, I'm ready to get flamed for this one. Let me don my suit...;)

I think it should be in the same category as alcohol, if not even less strictly regulated. It's no more a gateway drug than booze, and no one has ever died from it. Drunk people have a feeling of invincibility, they fight, they drive recklessly. Stoned people laugh, eat, and if they do drive, it's at about 15 miles an hour.

People who don't have first hand experience with marijuana think it's absolutely evil, because for years it's been lumped in with heroine, cocaine, and other insanely addictive substances. I used to smoke weed regularly, and when I decided to try and have a baby, I was able to stop with absolutely no withdrawal or cravings. As far as I'm concerned, weed isn't nearly as dangerous as booze or cigarettes, both of which are legal and a huge cash cow for the government. Coincidence, I'm sure. :rolleyes1
