A Call For Trip Reports

Folks,

I just got back from a Fort visit and if you didn't read it at all or recently, I had some comments about trip reports. I wanted to put this in a separate thread to bring attention to it.

I'd like to say one last thing about Trip Reports (TR). This was only my second live TR. Some folks do pre-TR's, live-TR's, and post-TR's. Some are short. Some are long. Some have pictures. Some don't. I've been on the board for years and have heard people say, "I don't write well. I don't have anything new to say. I don't have the time".

Now that I'm a homebody, I'm hoping somebody will do any kind of TR of any kind to remind me of how nice the Fort is. You can tell ol' "triple post ED" (thanks again ArielRae) can't write well. I had pictures of turtles which I don't think are new. But if you read the comments I got, you know as I know that people enjoy any reminder of the Fort and the relaxing feeling it give them.

So I'm asking for anyone going to do a TR. Of whatever type suits you. Help those of us at home. Throw us a crumb, will you?

The winter months of January and February are slow times and we don't get many trip reports. But my TR so far has nearly 4,800 views as of this writing which shows people are HUNGRY to hear about one of their favorite camping places.

I did a live TR and frankly it was a lot of work. But ANY kind of TR will satisfy those of us stuck at home. As I say above: short, long, with pix or without, live, pre, or post. We'll get excited about anything.

So the spring starts the time when folks start taking the trips all through the summer and fall. Help your fellow DISsers share in your excitement and drop us a thread. It's a lot of fun hearing from folks about your trip - I promise.

I'll give it a swing next week if you can talk me through some technical logistics, Ed. So your setup is a smartphone, right? You upload your pics to Picasa, I'm guessing, then post them here? How do you do that from your phone? The last time I tried linking a mobile Picasa pic to a post it didn't work.

So if you could give me some simple instructions on how you're posting pics on your smartphone I'd be ever so grateful!

Aww Ed, I hope I didn't upset you by pointing out the triple post. Wasn't sure you noticed. I had the boards do that to a few of my postings before.

I will be taking my first camping trip to fort wilderness this may. I'll be sure to post a trip report from a first time camper. Never been camping let alone tent camping before, but DH has plenty of times and he finally gets to again since we have been married.

Yay, it worked! but if that's how you posted your whole TR, Bama Ed, I salute you! Please tell me you have some sort of efficient way of posting pics via your smart phone.

I keep a blog, and the mobile Blogger software is easy to post on the fly...I wish the DIS had something as easy-to-use!

Well Kristin,

I see you got a photo posted. I don't know what steps you went thru or how detailed to be but I will start here at a high level and tell you how i did it.

I don't know or use Picasa but I bet it's similar to Photobucket (pb) which I do use so hopefully the description should translate.

I have an 2 GB data plan from AT&T that I used. I tried the free wifi at the Fort and it worked but it was slow. No faster than 3g. Why walk to the Meadow TP when I could sit at my pup where I had my fridge, the a/c, and didn't have to fight the ipad people for a plug? So after about Tuesday it was all done on 3g.

First, I went into pb and created a new folder for this Fort trip and made it the Default folder (so all uploads sent from the Fort would be filed there).

Second, I went into my phone/tablet internet browser and bookmarked the photobucket folder i'd created (so I could get to it with a minimum of buttons).

I already have the Camping DIS board bookmarked on my phone. BTW, I use the DIScreet-Mobile style which works very well if you have limited phone screen real estate.

The phone's camera app has a menu option to upload to pb seamlessly (also has a Picasa option as well as other options). So as I snapped pix I would upload the keepers over the 3g while DD and DW use the facilities or when we'd ordered some food and were waiting at the table (oh, we talked some too).

So I would open my browser and pull up the DIS and go to create or edit a post. I would write or paste the text in the box. Then I would hit the <enter> key AT LEAST 3 TIMES where I was going to put a picture. Why 3? to put a blank line above the photo, one for the photo link, and one below the photo, then I would type more text.

While the DIS was open in one browser window, I opened a second browser window where I pulled up the pb folder. I would copy the IMG link of the picture I wanted, switch to the DIS window, and paste it in the SECOND blank line of the 3 returns.

So I was going back and forth between windows pasting links. It might sound complicated but I got pretty good and quick at it by the end of the week. Again, I was using Android/Froyo and the stock browser on my Dell Streak (a fantastic device and had the largest screen at the time. It's a shame Dell discontinued it). The Dell Streak 5. It was much smoother than when I did my first live TR last April.

Again, it would have been easier if I'd had my laptop but this worked fine. If I was writing a longer text section I would fire up the bluetooth keyboard and write to a text editor and save it. Then I would copy the section I wanted to the clipboard, open the DIS window, and paste. Limits the time online.

Hope that makes sense. If you want to write something after you get home that's fine too. No vacation should include frustration if you can avoid it.

OK, that all makes sense and is essentially what I did to post that pic of that random, but lovely looking family

But you have to put the code stuff around the pics, right? the [ I M G ] stuff?

I sure did like that we were there with you real-time, and I'll try, but I may wait until we get home...we'll see how it goes! I'm sure once you get into a rhythm of it it isn't too big an undertaking. But still, I salute you for doing it live for us!!!

Well all i know is photobucket.

With pb each picture has four different kind of links associated with it. Look to the right of the picture in this pb snapshot:



I simply copied the IMG link which is the bottom one and pasted it in my TR. It has all the brackets and slashes and IMGs in the right places around the photolink itself.

That makes it easy to copy/paste a pix.

Thanks Ed, I'm trying photobucket now. Picasa doesn't have that links option, I wish it did since that is what I usually use since it is part of the Google cloud.

Okay, I'm giving posting a picture a try. We head down tomorrow and I've never done pix before.

My DD13 is the goalkeeper. Soccer tournament at Disney's ESPN complex!

YES! It worked! Great instructions Ed....I'm gonna do a TR this trip. I enjoyed yours so much. Actually think it will be kinda fun to do!
