What does fondant taste like? I've baked and decorated many cakes, but have always used buttercream.

From what my planner has told me is that the fondant is not served, its just there for presentation.

Our cake was served without the fondant but I have tasted it in the past and it tastes like cardboard. Nasty

From people I have heard it tastes pasty and chewy and sugary...some like it some don't..like Ellebren said it is only on for presentation.

They do not serve the fonadant...it is just for presentation. In between the fondant and cake is a layer of buttercream so they rmove the fondant when serving and just serve the buttercream.

My cake displayed with fondant:

I'd definitely try the fondant when you cut the cake. A wedding I went to (not Disney) had fondant and it was delish!!! :woohoo: To me it was like a gumpaste type thing. You actually had to cut it. But it was sweet with a vanilla-type flavor, almost like the buttercream. They say, since fondant is mostly sugar that if you like sugar (I do) you'll like fondant. But try it first. Then after you finish cutting, I'm assuming you can ask to keep fondant on. (It's easy to peel off. Guests shouldn't mind to much.)

Mary your cake was stunning girl!!! LOVE IT!! It looks good too!

I can assure you that Disney fondant is not the sweet, delish kind you had! :rotfl: Our Disney fondant tasted like clay, but it sure looked purdy. :cutie: I had the fondant on a homemade wedding cake a few months later, and it was definitely sweet and delish!

Here's our cake after Disney removed the fondant:

I got married at Disneyland's Grand Californian Hotel and we had one cake with each type of frosting. They did take the fondant off the Groom's cake before serving it (apparently they don't get a lot of requests for Groom's cakes out here at DL...).

I actually do a bit of cake decorating with fondant and there really is a difference between homemade fondant and the professional stuff. The professional stuff is similar to the Wilton fondant you can buy pre-made at Michaels - made with glucose. I'd buy a package and see if that is to your taste, or I would ask your consultant if you could get a sample at your tasting. With all the cakes they make daily, they should have a golf-ball size chunk sitting around.

If you do your own cakes, you should really check out this website - www.cakejournal.com - Louise is from Denmark and does a lot of easy to learn fondant work and her recipe for marshmallow fondant is to die for. It's very easy to roll out and shape. I used it on my last cake and it got rave reviews. Fondant really is fun to work with - makes me feel like I'm one of the girls on Ace of Cakes!

Mary; what a gorgeous cake!

Ace of Cakes is my fav show. I notice they use a lot of fondant too.

I am one of those rare people that love the taste of fondant. Most people find it chewy and not edible, but something about the obscene amount of sugar...mmmm I love it!

They actually did serve the fondant to my guests. It was by request though. I found it really didn't have a taste. We had sugar crystals all over it, so it sweetened it up plus gave it a little crunch. I liked it.

I have had other cakes with fondant, and it wasn't really sweet. It didn't taste bad, but it was chewy.
