A/C on Disney Buses

I have NEVER been cold on a DW bus. It always feels great after the Florida heat. We were there Sprig Break 2013 when the outside temps were pretty chilly and the buses still weren't too cold. :confused3

I think I am sensing a pattern here, most complaints are from europeans I think, including myself and a lot of us go mid August thru mid Sept.. when the humidity in Florida is at it's worse.. Even if temps were high, just the humidity will force you to put the AC on max to combat the humidity.. I think that is the issue.

Consider that many people (especially europeans) are not used to air conditionning.
Homes do not even have a A/C unit, because we never need them.

For example, in 2003 we had a hot spell of 7 days ,with max temps around 100 to 105F, we were so unprepared and unaccustomed for such extreme temperatures that 15,000 people died in France alone and over 2,000 more in the UK.

Try to imagine what it's like when we come to Florida under 90+ temperatures and then jump on a bus at 70F ... it's ice cold for many of us because temperatures are extreme for us, and the temperature difference between outside and inside is just more than most of us can cope with

All I know is the temperature on the buses feels fine to me. :confused3

It might only feel cold to people because they're boiling hot before they step into the bus. It feels great to me.

This!
I was going to say the A/C is set at "awesome".

The dispute I'm trying to settle is that some guests think that the A/C is set dangerously too low. Some even say it's 60 or below inside the buses.
.

Dangerously low? what do you mean like 32 degrees so that you get hypothermia? LOL :rotfl2:

I'm sorry this just sounded funny to me.

In December (on a warm day), I actually remember thinking how hot it was on our bus from DTD to Pop century. The windows were all fogged up and I was surprised the temp wasn't lowered. I'm thinking the A/C might have been broken. Other than that, I don't remember ever being uncomfortable with temps on any other Disney bus.

yes, that was how it was supposed to sound :p

When you read Trip Reports on the part of european first timers, you'll often read things like "The americans are crazy, they set their A/C too low, it's colder in their buses/buildings than in my deep freeze"

it's part of some of the misconceptions that people have. But it's also true that many of us, europeans, do catch colds, or even worse, because of the A/C.

I guess that spending a full week in bed with a fever because you caught a nasty cold on a bus does qualify as "dangerously low", and you'd be amazed at how many people actually fall ill because they're not used to A/C.

there is a big difference between the weather in December and the nasty hot and humid in summer. I love A/C but at times do feel it affects me.
If I turn the A/C on high at night I wake up with my nose stuffed and my throat scratchy.

its good to know Im not the only one who freezes on some buses.

Have no idea what the temperature is, as I think each bus driver sets it, but in general, I think they could compare to Arondelle when Elsa is having a bad day ;)

I hate A/C. In a car, bus, my house, restaurants and malls. I have a jacket with me more in the summer, than I do in the winter. I know it is necessary, but I still do not like it. Maybe for the first 5 min., than after that it gets to cold for me. I live in Minnesota, where it is cold for at least 6 months. I don't like to be cold in the summer too.:rotfl:
This is me, totally. Always cold, always in a sweater. Buses and shows, restaurants are cold for me but its hot out and a lot of ppl crammed in a hot bus doesnt sound fun for most ppl(I wouldnt mind.) When it rains then you step into a fridged bus, its nearly painful.
(But I will say you cannot get sick from A/C its just those nasty germs that make ppl sick. My boss has put A/c on when its 60 or less out, "to circulate the air" which = meneposeal sweats lol but and I am never sick.)
BTW not European, dont have central air and maybe Ill use a window unit here or there in summer- maybe

They have to keep it on blizzard to keep it halfway comfortable with all of the opening and closing of the doors. Anybody who lives down here can tell you, if you let a vehicle heat up in the middle of the day it takes forever to get it cooled back down.

And that there is one major misconception!!!

You don't catch cold or get sick from the cold. They are getting sick because they are being exposed to new germs they haven't been exposed to coming from another country. Sorry it isn't the air conditioning's fault.

You get sick from germs yes, but a the temp drop you experience on a hot summer day can start the body going hypothermic, that suppresses the immune system ( one of the first things to slow or shut down when one starts to become hypothermic) and you can end up sick more easily.

The AC system can indeed be a contributor.

People should simply be prepared.

you aren't going to go hypothermic on a short Disney bus ride!

You can most certainly start. As little as 20 degree drop in temp can start the process, if water is involved like being wet from rain a lower temp drop will start it.

Sorry to contradict you, but what you wrote is not true.

Agreed. It is cold but you're also super hot outside. It has to be at least 65*?

Sent from my iPhone using DISBoards

That's too cold for me.

I don't know what they are set at specifically, but the ones that we had in Vermont were set at about 68 degrees in the summer.

Still too cold...

It's typically set on around 70ish

Still too cold...

My house is currently about 75 and I have a sweater, pants and slippers on. Now if I was up and moving around a lot, then it would be more comfy, but if I'm just sitting, I'm usually cold.

Everyone is different. At my work, I'm usually fairly comfy. But I have one co-worker who constantly has a fan blowing on her cause she's hot and another one who wraps up in a heavy sweater with a blanket on her lap. They're both about 50ish and none of us are close to an air vent.

I'm taking a thin pashmina type wrap with me when I head out on my trip. Will be in my bag cause I know I'll be cold on those busses and on some of those indoor attractions.

Just back on Monday night from WDW.

OK, while most busses are chilly, once in awhile you get one that is insanely cold…… we had one like that leaving Downtown Disney last week. It was almost hilarious watching other people get on the bus after us. I was singing to new passengers, "The cold doesn't bother us anyway" as they boarded……. It was just nuts how cold it was. It was a hot weekend, but this was still really uncomfortable.

AC does not usually bother me all that much.

When we got off at WL, our glasses not only had condensation, it was like they were icy, you would write on them. :faint:

No, the driver does not set the temperature. The only control they have is to either have it on or off. All or nothing. AC's are set by maintenance.

Sorry to contradict you, but what you wrote is not true.

So 20 degrees below what. 98.6 or whatever the temperature happens to be outside? 20 degrees below 98.6 is 78.6, but you would have to be trapped in a walk in freezer for hours for that to happen

Actually what they wrote is true. Your body temperature will not drop to a dangerous point, unless your body temperature drops like you said, 20 degrees or below. That figure is inside your body, not outside. If your heart is beating it is not going to chill your interior body temperature by riding on a bus.

It will not stop your immune system and it will not give you a cold. A cold is a virus which is an outside source. The buses wouldn't even be able to be set to a point of near freezing. What people feel is sweat evaporating off the body. It does help cool you, but it is because your body temperature has risen above healthy. You will feel uncomfortable sometimes until everything dries, but you will not compromise your health for the brief period of time that you are on a bus. You might well get heat stroke from it being to hot though.

Hypothermia due to cold air can happen but not from moderately cool air. Freezing, yes or sustained exposure to well below body temperatures, maybe. Otherwise it is just another old wife's tail, that people prefer to believe.

You do know air conditioning does not make you sick, right?
