Hi everyone :)

I am 75% positive that I am going to do the Minnie in May. :cool1: After asking a million questions, and having them answered with such kindness I decided I have nothing to lose. Someone even took the time to attach photos for me too, which truly represented that everyone can DO it!!! Not to mention it served as a reminder that those on this board openly embrace everyone, which is a blessing too!

However, the last time I did anything on a schedule was a year ago. Can anyone suggest a book that would give me a training plan for the Minnie 15K.

I would be considered a beginner, since it has been way too long, if that helps.

Again, thank you!!:goodvibes :goodvibes

I don't have suggestions for a book, but my recommendation would be to use the training plans at www.halhigdon.com (I used his training plan to train for my first 5k and my first (and so far only) marathon. He has a specific 15K training plan for beginners. My sister, who has never run before, is going to use his training plans to train for the Minnie 15K and is planning on using the beginner 30/30 training plan, followed by the 5K training plan, followed by the 15K training plan.

Swim-mom, congratulations on making the decision! If you are looking for a little help to get you started I would recommend checking out Hal Higdon and Jeff Galloway's websites and their books. A lot of people here also really recommend the Marathoning for Mortals book by John Bingham. These will really give you lots of ideas for how to train and answer questions.

If you are looking for a training program - Hal Higdon has some good ones. You have lots of time to maybe start with a 5K program, work your way up to a 10K program, then start in on a 15K program. I trained for Minnie last year using Hal's novice 15K program and it definitely helped me cross the finish line. Here's the link to it:

Best of luck!

I personally think that John Bingham is the best writer for books to help beginners. His wife is his co auther and she is a PT.

"Marathoning for Mortals"

"The courage to start"

Are classics in beginner books. To many authers gear their writing toward becoming a faster competitive runner. Some of us just enjoy the events for the awesome experience of being here.

Hope that helps.

I second the books that Dave recommends. They were very inspirational to get me off the couch and going. The other thing that kept me going was this great group of people. They kept me going when I was down!

I'll third that recommendation for John Bingham. I'd start with "Marathoning for Mortals". Don't let the title scare you. It's full of great advice for any distance and it's written for the everyman runner.

It got me from "I can't remember the last time I actually ran" to "What am I going to do with all these lovely medals I now have?"

MFM, and hanging around here. This REALLY is the best place! :thumbsup2

:goodvibes Everyone, thank you for your replies :)

I forgot to mention that all I have is a TM to use, and maybe the outdoors if I have time before it getts too dark.

Background info:

I am married with 4 children + an exchange student (until the end of Jan). PLUS I am in grad school.............so my plate is a bit full if not overflowing, but I remember the joy and calming effect I had when I ran, and I miss that.

Can you train for the Minnie just using a TM and not a GYM membership?

Thanks again for your kindness!!:goodvibes :goodvibes

As I recall, in the book "Marathoning for Motals", John Bingham talks about a guy who did ALL of his training on a treadmill for his first marathon. It's a great book and a quick, easy read. I just sent my daughter a copy for her first race!

Oh yes it is definitely possible and we do have some WISH Team members who do just that.

You CAN do this!

FYI - Marthonign for Mortals will not have a specific 15K plan. I used teh hald marathon plan which takes yo up to a 10 mile run. It's alittle overkill, but as close as I could find.

I highly recommend the book itself too!

Absolutely. Once I started seriously running I actually stopped going to the gym because I couldn't fit time in for both (and, around here, the gym costs WAY too much money to not go almost every day) I trained for my first 5K and did most of my training runs for my first 10 miler on a treadmill. I'm no expert, but my personal recommendation is that doing most of your training on the treadmill is fine, but you should try running outside a few times before the race because it does feel a bit different. For me, the hardest part of switching from running on the treadmill to running outside was having any sense of how fast I was going and making sure that I wasn't running too fast.

I adapted a Marathoning for Mortals plan for the Minnie 15K last year, which was my first race.

Other books have came & gone since then, but Marathoning for Mortals stays!

Another option is to use the 14 week beginner's schedule only shorten the training program to 13 weeks, leaving out the 10 mile long walk.
