A Bit Frightened

I've never posted on the community section before, but I've been on the Dis for quite some time and just wanted to express myself.

My train was evacuated today at 42nd Street in NYC to be searched by the police. After the threat yesterday, cops are going crazy looking for things that could hurt us and I know that any moment something bad could happen. I never thought I'd say this about my city, but I can't stand it anymore. You can't tell who's lying and who's telling the truth...

Problem is, I take the train to go to work, my DGf's, and ALL of my friend's apartments. Anybody else in NYC or any other city affected as well?

I ride the subway into Times Square every day for the past 31 years. Don't panic - we have to go on with our lives. I came to work on 9/11 and 9/12.

If you feel uncomfortable on a certain train, get off at the next station, compose yourself and get on the next one. (I have done this).

It's a scary time, but don't forget the media loves to hype everything for ratings. I am learning to keep my eyes and ears open, but not to listen to every inflated story on the news.

I hope you feel better - at least the weekend is almost here!

I'm in Jersey City, right near the PATH station. back in July, right after London, I was in my office when there was an announcement from the building management that we couldn't exit the building because of police activity.

20 minutes later, we were told "it was a misunderstanding" and that we were now free to leave the building.

seems that there's a major bus route going past the building. a bus was evacuated because of something "susupicious looking" that turned out to be harmless.

I think we're going to have a few similar incidents in the next few days.

Who do you listen to? The local politicians who say there IS a threat or Homeland Security who say the threat is not coming from a credible source?
How confusing is that!!

Just wishing you and all others peace of mind, JRS. Sad we have to live like this. And welcome to the Community board, hope to see you more often here on the CB. :goodvibes

I spent the past 2 days in NYC and didn't hear about the threats until I got home. I can understand being frightened, but I agree with imsorry. Just trust your instincts.

I think right now they're just over reacting over everything.

We had while wating for our plane in LGA a woman go nuts, because a back pack was left on seat in the waiting area and no one was sitting next to it. She was insisting that we be removed and it be checked for a bomb.

The poor guy when he came back from getting a drink and a pretzel was so sorry, he didn't grab the backpack when he grabbed his other bag. I was just happy no one stole it on him.

I think people really need to take a deep breath and relax.

Hi JRawkSteady,

I ride the subway every day to work as well and I admit, I was a bit on edge coming in this morning. Your feelings are valid and are being experienced by just about everyone I know. But we can't let those a--holes keep us from living our lives. We gotta just keep on keepin' on baby.

And I completely agree with imsorry, if you feel uncomfortable, then get off at the next stop, get your wits about you, take a few breaths and get on the next one when you're comfortable. I'll admit I've done that a couple of times. It works and at the very least, you gain some perspective when you're not in freak-out mode.

Feel free to PM me any time if you like!

so Penn station gets evacuated because of a soda bottle and the washington minumnet is emptied because of a prank call.

america in the 21st century.

Don't want to be an American Idiot,
one nation under the new mania...

You know...after we all saw the Twin Towers fall, at first, I imagined that everyone would move away and New York would become a ghost town, even on the UWS, where I live, but everyone stayed. I love this city and no amount of orange alerts or subway evacuations would force me to leave. If I can take what happened on 9/11 and in the days that followed, I can take these little inconveniences standing on my head!! Hang in there, JRawk!!

Hang in there, this too shall pass. I agree with the posters above, if you feel uncomfortable, follow your instincts and get off the train and wait for the next one, or the one after that if necessary.

After September 11th I had a very hard time coming into Penn Station every day but after a while it got easier. That is until I see the police with the full body armor on and the semi automatic machine guns...then I go into panic mode and just want to run the heck out of there...but I don't, I take a deep breath and thank God that they are there to protect me and my fellow passengers.

Just stay alert, and as the slogan goes "If you see something, say something".

Wonder what security is going to be like at the Columbus Day Parade this year? We haven't gone in years, but we plan on taking our newborn daughter to check it out this year. Anyone hear any new restrictions?

Yeah - I know it's a bit much - and usually I don't believe the media, but having to walk through dark tunnels just freaked me out... I think I'll be better after the weekend. Sorry for the small breakdown, but thanks to everyone for your kind words!! I love NYC to death, but these media lies need to cease asap. THANKS GUYS!!! :)

Have a great weekend and try not to think about it too much! :sunny:

Hey, if things get too much and you need to work out your frustrations, let me know. I'll hand you a brush and you can paint a shelter. Or an apron and you can serve some food! It's pretty cathartic and keeps things in perspective.

Have a great (and peaceful) weekend!

I live in London and have to use the tube about twice a month and have been really scared since the bombs. I know the more I do it the better it will get but once I get out in the fresh air it is such a relief.

Hope things feel better soon.
