A Big Thank You

Awhile back I had posted and asked for advisement regarding the fact that I began dating a man with a six year old. I wasn't certain if I could handle the responsibility and what I should do. Almost everyone told me to give it time and see where it goes. I did just that. Four months later, and the three of us are going strong! We spend so much quality time together and are getting to know one another so well.

This child has brought so much into my life that I didn't even know was missing!

Just wanted to say THANKS to everyone who answered my pleas for advice!

I missed your original post, so I don't know all the details. But I went through this myself several years ago. The guy I was dating had a 5 year old daughter who wouldn't even address me PERIOD. She called me "HER!" I worked long and hard--spending lots of quality time with her, making things with her and teaching her things. We eventually got to the point where we had our own special relationship together. At first I treated her as if she were a niece...and later she became a whole lot more.

Then her dad asked me to marry him...and our wedding was as much about her as it was about us. We had a special ceremony for the new family, and she got a necklace with three rings intertwined, symbolizing the new family.

The long and short of it is that we lived happily ever after....

and the lesson is that when you date a man or woman with a child that you are making as much a commitment to that child as you are his/her parent. I hope things work out for the three of you, especially since that child is making a bond with you that could be easily undone through no fault of his own. Take special care with his feelings and do all you can to reinforce the dad in his position. It's not easy, but it can work out. Good luck to you!
