am working at my son's Cub Scout day camp this week. I am the den leader for his group (30 boys on Monday, down to 27 due to 1 drop out who never showed, and 2 that moved into the correct group for their level).
It's hot, muggy, a bit stormy at times, and corraling 27 boys is a task in itself.
I have 8 boys that have some sort of non-physical disability--ranging from ADHD to panic attacks to Aspergers. (Those arethe ones that the parents told the camp about---we have a few more that are either very very socially stunted at the age of 8-9 or that have other issues that the parents did not disclose; and yes that did happen--we have one boy that is allergic to grass, and the parents did not put it on the health form!
)
We have one boy in my husband's den that is ADHD (and he's with me at camp), so I know how to deal with him specifically--but some of the other boys have been a challenge for me.
I want to say THANK YOU to the disabilites section on the boards. I read tons of threads on Monday on how each of you deals with your children on a daily basis, and that gave me some ideas on how to deal with these boys.
Tuesday ran much smoother, because of the information I found here; and Wednesday even better, because I got to know the boys a bit more (I have never met most of these boys before, only 4 are from my home den)--and I have found a well of patience that I did not know existed.
Today and Friday will be even better--I have "good behavior" prizes (just small things, like temporary tattoos, lollipops, rope bracelets, foam airplanes) that they can earn throughout the day.
So Thank you again, for helping me understand what I can do with these boys.
