Hi all,
First let me asure you i am ok!Anyway here in nyc yesterday and today has been around 97-101 degress with the heat index well past 115.So I'm praying that we get no big runs or jobs, but the hotter it is the more jobs or 911 calls pour in.So i had to work yesterday and at the max of the heat at 4 pm we get a run,and the first truck in quickly confirms the job and it goes 2 alarms and would go up to the 4th alarm within 30 mins.Anyway one of my best friends and co workers kevin,we are all standing around outside the building after everything is done and drinking water from the hydrant.kevin does not look so great, but we all looked like we could use some nice room with ac.He begans to mumble and is not making any sense at first i really thought he was pulling our leg,it was when He collapsed to the ground and starting to have a seziure i knew he was in grave danger.he began to mumble and only 30 seconds later he was on the ground, there was little to no warning what so ever, that was the scary part.He had a heat stroke,i went to the hospital with him his rectal temp was 108,and that was after we soaked him with water and an ride in a ambulance with massive great ac.Sadly i was not allowed to stay with him by the chief, cause it was too,too busy and we were already down 2 guys and i had to return to the fire house. The FDNY sent the Help team(a FDNY guy will sit with him,24/7 and help him with anything he needs) to him.he is already home, but does not feel too great.I have seen many of my guys get heat exhaustion and heat stroke, but in 8 years in,i have never seen it come on in 30 seconds flat it was scary to say the least.when it is someone that you know or love, and yes i love most of the guys i work with like brothers it hits a little too close too home.he will be fine and i had to change tours next week with a guy so i have to go back and work at 6 tonight and once again its 100 degress outside. Not to worry i have 5 bottles of frozen gatorade and lots of ice at the fire house, and we got smart and put a cooler filled with ice cold gatorade strapped to the rear of the rig.

wow...that would scare me to death... I'm glad he's ok... thankfully you were able to help him so quickly!!! You take care of yourself up there and stay cool and hydrated...I know you already know all of that....but still... you really gotta watch. :grouphug: pixiedust: for your friend!

Wow - that IS really scary. Thank God this has a happy ending.

Prayers & Pixiedust for your "brother" Kevin and all you firefighters - stay safe.

Hope "Kevin" is ok. I live on LI and have several friends in the FDNY. You guys are the greatest. Stay cool.

Wow, scary stuff. Thank goodness you diagnosed him very quickly and got him the correct treatment. I marvel at how you firefighters work in the summer under such hot conditions.

Oh, and I just saw Backdraft at Universal studios in LA. It really renewed my respect for you all. Take care and get through your heat waves back East.

My uncle is a retired Yonkers Firefighter and 2 of my cousins husbands are Yonkers firefighters and I have heard some of their stories. I hope your friend is ok and gets better.
I have always had the utmost respect for firefighters and have seen there heroics and bravery first hand and unfortunately have heard and seen some lose their life.
My father had passed the test to be a Yonkers firefighter years ago but before he decided to join their was a huge fire , that we watched from our apartment, and a couple of firefighters got stuck on the top floor and lost there life when the building came down.
Needless to say my father realized he was not the right person for that job and kept his job as a postal worker at the office across from Yonkers Raceway.
